Born: Near Lexington, Kentucky, 1823.
Died: Newton, Illinois, 1904.

Came to Illinois in 1852 and settled in Jasper County, which was the place of his residence throughout the larger part of his life. Shortly thereafter he began to preach. He was a soldier in the Mexican War. In 1861 he became captain of Company H, Thirty-eighth Illinois Infantry. Later, he was chaplain of the 143d Illinois Infantry.

In these positions he acquitted himself in a manner becoming a Christian military officer. His ministry was confined mainly to Jasper and the surrounding counties. There his labors were fruitful in much good. When he prospered in business, he rendered to the Lord of his increase. At an early age the care of his widowed mother and her younger children devolved upon him.

His life was full of joyful helpfulness. His last years were passed in Newton, where he delivered his last sermon on the eighty-first anniversary of his birth.
