                            MUSICALS

The annual musical is a student production with J. C. Murray and
Marge Roberts acting as staff advisors. The students produce,
direct and stage it. To quote Marge, "While the musical is always
entertaining, its main purpose was from the beginning and has
continued to be, to give the students a vehicle through which they
could put into practice the things they have been learning at
Western." The musical is presented at the annual youth rally

                    GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S MEDALS
                           (Grade 12)

Annually, the Governor-General of Canada awarded medals to the
graduates of Saskatchewan high schools. In 1928, when I graduated,
there was one medal for each of the large city collegiates and one
medal for the best student of all the other high schools combined.
By the time a Western student won this medal, there was a medal for
each of the large city collegiates and one medal for each of the 16
districts into which the other high schools divided. This award
system changed again in 1989 so that each high school and each
collegiate in the province received a medal.

                        PRESIDENT'S MEDAL
                           (Grade 12)

This award was first presented in 1963 by President Wieb. "In 1962,
I realized that certain students seemed to be above the average in
the way they responded to the opportunity presented at the school.
I, subsequently, introduced the President's Gold Medal award as a
means of giving recognition to one of the graduating students in
high school. To me, this award helps us to keep in perspective the
goals and objectives of the school by identifying in one individual
those characteristics which we would like to see developed in each
of our students.

"I realize that the selection of one person to be honoured in this
way necessitates leaving out other students who may be nearly as
worthy but I also believe that the exercise involved in making the
selection is beneficial in that the relative merits of many
students are compared. This comparison shows us just how many
'good' students we are blessed with each year and indicates the
influence Christ is having in their lives."

The criteria used for selection are: the student must be taking a
reasonably full academic load with good, solid academic record;
must be recognized as a leader in good works such as church,
W.C.C., community, etc.; must display Christian character of
unselfishness and concern for others; display promise for the
future; exemplify the type of student we want in our school; and
must be a people person.

            Q. FAYE BRAZLE CHRISTIAN WOMANHOOD AWARD

                       BRAZLE FAMILY AWARD
                           (Grade 12)

The Brazles moved to Western from Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the fall of
1963. Mrs. Brazle opened her home to the students and is dearly
remembered as a very hospitable Christian lady. Mrs. Brazle offered
a teacher training class to the high school girls. Before her
illness, she conducted these classes on Wednesday nights in the
chapel. As soon as her affliction from multiple sclerosis subsided
some what, Mrs. Brazle taught the classes bi-weekly on Sunday
afternoons at her home. Mrs. Brazle passed away in January 1972. To
honour their mother, the family set up the Q. Faye Brazle Christian
Womanhood Award in 1975 in her memory.

The criteria used as set by the Brazle family are what they feel
were their mother's characteristics, ideals she lived and tried to
teach her children.

The winner must be a grade 12 graduating young woman who has a
spirit of dedication, a sense of contentment (accepting of life),
a concern for other people, a willingness to serve, a desire to
teach and a sense of humour.

for four years where Max was Principal and taught Bible.

The Mowrers returned from Japan in 1971 and began work at Great
Lakes Christian College in Beamsville, Ontario, where they remained
until coming again to Western in 1978. Max took over the
President's position and also served as business manager for seven
years. In 1985 they moved to Hyland Christian School in
Westminster, Colorado where they remained until retirement in 1993.
Max continues as bookkeeper for the Northwest Church of Christ in
Westminster, Colorado, and serves as an elder of the 350-member
congregation.

Mildred Mowrer was also actively involved in the work at Western,
serving as Dean of Girls from 1965 to 1967, and in the business
office and print shop from 1978 to 1985.

EARL DANIEL WIEB
Earl Daniel Wieb, born 1926, is the son of Daniel and Florence Wieb
of Winnipeg. After completing his elementary and secondary
education, he apprenticed as a printer and became a journeyman in
1951. In 1955, he graduated from Abilene Christian College with a
Bachelor or Arts degree. In 1973, he studied at Oklahoma Christian
College to receive a teaching certificate. At the University of
Regina (1975-76), he studied additional education and arts classes
(four).

In 1947, Dan Wieb married Dorothy Stebbings of Winnipeg. Their
children are: Linda (1949), Karen (1952), Tommy (b. 1956 - d.
1964), Allen (1956), and Kent (1959).

Mr. Wieb's employment profile: Systems Equipment Limited, Winnipeg
(1944-52); minister for Sherbrook (Erin St.) Church of Christ,
Winnipeg (1955-61); president of Western Christian College
(1960-73) (during first year of presidency, he resided on campus
only one week per month); leave of absence (1973-74); teacher at
Western Christian College, except his one year leave of absence
(1961-89); principal/dean (1976-85); director of public relations
(1984-85); and president again of Western Christian College
(1985-88).

Before he became president of the college in 1960, Dan Wieb had
served a three year term as a director of the college board.
Consequently, Mr. E. D. Wieb has served Western Christian College
more than 30 years altogether.

Following his retirement from college life, he continued to teach
an English class for the University of Regina for a number of
years, and became the minister for the Weyburn Church of Christ.

In addition to his college work, Mr. Wieb has served as an elder of
the Weyburn Church of Christ (1972-88) and has delivered lectures
and taught at special seminars in various places. He gave a series
of talks on the gospel of John on the daily Weyburn radio program
"The Living Way" in 1974. He has taught at Bible camps in Manitoba,
Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Idaho. He delivered lectures at the Pan
American Lectureship in Panama City in the late 1960's, at Great
Lakes Christian College, Beamsville, Ontario, at the B. C. to B. C.
program at Vancouver, and at the European Concentration for
Advanced Bible Study in Gemunden, West Germany (1984).

In addition, Mr. Wieb has been associate editor of the _Gospel
Herald_ (five years) and co-edited the book, _Centennial Yearbook
of Churches of Christ in Canada_ with Geof Ellis.

In Weyburn, Mr. Wieb has been a member of the Rotary Club (seven
years) and currently is its secretary-treasurer.

In 1985, he received the Doctor of Laws degree from his alma mater,
Abilene Christian University. The degree was presented during the
fall lectureship at Western Christian College by Dr. John C.
Stevens, chancellor of A.C.U. Earl Daniel Wieb was honoured for his
"service to Western, the church as a preacher, as a scholar and
writer, to his family, as a community leader and as an educator."

In addition, Dr. Stevens said, "You have offered true service to
the cause of Christ by devoting more than a quarter of a century to
your work with Western Christian College during which time you have
served as a member of the Board of Trustees and as president,
teacher, fundraiser, editor, counselor, principal, and dean of the
college, while your wife, Dorothy, has served as teacher,
librarian, coordinator and hostess for the college."

The Western Christian College students have also honoured the life
and work of Mr. Wieb by dedicating the yearbook "The Northern
Lights" to him twice (1970, 1986) and the college board of
directors named him President Emeritus of the college in 1988.

Mr. Wieb considers that his two major achievements at the college
are the renovation of the Rita Foster-Stocking Education Building
and the implementation of the more advanced Bible program in 1968.
It has been very rewarding to him to watch the maturing of former
students throughout the years. He also derives satisfaction from
witnessing the spiritual growth of staff members that he has urged
to become part of the college. Furthermore, he considers that the
survival of the college throughout the years is a miracle. "God has
watched over us."

(Recently the following additional material was received, telling
of Dan's and Dorothy's more recent activities.)

"After leaving Western Christian College in 1988, I became full-
time minister for the Weyburn Church of Christ, a position I held
for three years. From 1988 through 1994 I also taught a class for
the University of Regina through the Regional College. I finally
retired completely in December 1994.

"Beginning in 1990 and continuing to the present, Dorothy and I
have spent most of each winter in the Southern United States. Since
1990 I have preached frequently for the church in Weyburn. For the
past three years I have written the "Family Matters" page for the
"Gospel Herald". In 1992 I completed a mono graph on the Book of
Romans which may one day be published.

"As of this writing, Dorothy and I have four children, nine
grandchildren and four great grandchildren."--Dan Wieb.

ERNEST WALTER ANDREAS
Ernest Andreas (b 1923) is the oldest son of Cornelius and Olga
Andreas of Main Centre, Saskatchewan. He received his elementary
and secondary education at Main Centre. In 1947-48, he attended the
Winter Bible School at Radville and then in 1974-76, he attended
the Knight Arnold School of Preaching at Memphis, Tennessee.

Ernest married Louise Jacobs of Minton, Saskatchewan, in 1948. They
had two children: Robert (1951) and Leila (1952). His wife Louise
passed away in a car accident in 1978. In 1979, he married Joyce
Kirkpatrick of Oklahoma City. Ernest operated a grocery store in
Gladmar (1948-53) and worked in the business office of nearby
Sybouts Salt Mine (1952-57) during which time he was also the
non-resident business manager of Radville Christian College
(1953-57). In 1957, Ernest and Louise, with their children, moved
to North Weyburn where he became full-time bursar and plant manager
of Western Christian College. He occupied this position until 1970.
Then he and his wife moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where Ernest
became public relations director for Western Christian College
under the direction of Western Christian Foundation (1970-76).

After graduating from the Knight Arnold School of Preaching, Ernest
preached full-time for three different congregations: Chilliwack,
B. C. (1976-80), Medicine Hat, Alberta (1980-85), Yorkton,
Saskatchewan (1985-90).

Ernest served on the board of directors of Western Christian
College (1949-57, 1977-86). He also served as an elder for the
Weyburn Church of Christ (1967-70).

In 1958, the college yearbook was dedicated to Ernest and Louise
Andreas and in 1977, he was chosen as Alumnus of the Year.
When asked what he considered his greatest achievement while
working for Western, he replied that the designing and extensive
renovations to make the old mess hall into a convenient, modern
education building (1968) gave him a good sense of achievement.

He is also pleased that when he lived in Tennessee, he was able to
arrange secure funding for the Bible department of the college.

A Western memory: Once when Ernest was crawling in the slippery mud
under an old building to repair some plumbing, a rope was tied
around his waist to serve as a rescue tether in the event that he
became mired!

LOUISE JACOBS ANDREAS
Louise Jacobs (b 1920 - d 1978) was the eldest daughter of Lewis
and Ollie Jacobs of Minton, Saskatchewan. In 1948, she married
Ernest Andreas and two children were born to this union: Robert
(1951) and Leila (1952). Louise and her husband and family lived at
Gladmar, Saskatchewan, until 1957. The following is taken from the
Western Christian Messenger:

"The Andreas family lived on the campus from 1957 to
1970, during which time Ernest was business manager and
Louise was loved by all for her Christian service. She
was always available to work, assisting in the business
office, mailing room, print shop, preparing snacks and
meals for others, and assisting in various activities for
the church and school. Following this time spent in
Weyburn, they moved to Tennessee where Ernest did public
relations work for Western Christian Foundation, thus
maintaining their close connection with the college.
During this time, Louise, in her customary way, was doing
benevolent work for the church and assisting the African
Christian Schools Foundation. Since 1976, they have been
in Chilliwack, British Columbia, working full time for
     the church...

"In July, to celebrate their thirtieth anniversary,
Louise accompanied Ernest on a trip to Europe where he
was to work with churches in Germany and Austria for two
months. Louise returned after the first four weeks and
visited with their daughter and others of the family
while Ernest completed his work in Europe. Louise's death
came as the result of an automobile accident in Edmond,
Oklahoma on August 19, just as she left her daughter's
home to drive to Winnipeg to meet Ernest as he returned
from Europe...All acquainted with Western Christian
College are grieved at the untimely passing of Sister
     Louise Andreas."

WILLIAM CLINTON BRAZLE
William Clinton Brazle was born March 14, 1924 at Niotaze, Kansas.
His parents were Cloy (still living) and Retha Brazle. He attended
Kansas country schools for his elementary education and went to
high school at Cedar Vale, Kansas. He studied one year at Kansas
State Teachers' College at Pittsburg, and finished his work for a
Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural economics at Oklahoma
State College in Stillwater in 1948. He took a number of classes at
Montana State, Bozeman, one class at Canadian Bible College, Regina
and an art history class at Western Christian College. In 1976, he
graduated from Abilene Christian University with a Master of
Science degree in Bible and missions.

In 1946, Brother Brazle married Faye Guinn of Wellington, Kansas.
Their children are Melinda (1948), Marilyn (1949), Michael (1951),
Mark (1952), Paul (1954) and Peter (1956). After 25 years of
marriage, Faye died of multiple sclerosis.

In 1972, Brother Brazle married Delma Butrum of Abilene, Texas, who
had three sons: Melvin (1940 deceased now), James (1945) and
Herbert (1949). Clinton and Delma have 22 grandchildren and two
great grandchildren.

Brother Brazle's employment career is as follows: while attending
college he worked at Railway Express; preached at Ripley, Oklahoma
(1947); minister for two congregations, Kiowa, Kansas and
Riverside, Oklahoma (1948-49); minister at Ames, Oklahoma
(1949-50); minister at Bozeman, Montana (1950-58); minister at
Anaconda, Montana (1958-62); minister for the Brookside church at
Tulsa, Oklahoma (1962 63); minister at Weyburn, Saskatchewan (1963
84); an observer at the Boston, Massachusetts church (1984-85);
minister for the Brookside church at Tulsa, Oklahoma (1985-89).

At Weyburn, Brother Brazle conducted a daily radio broadcast, "The
Living Way," for 12 years (1963-74), and introduced the Bible corre
spondence course work for Canadian students soon after he arrived
in Weyburn and for over seas students in 1979. He served as elder
for the church (1967-74).

Brother Brazle conducted his Young Timothy Class for 21 years. This
was a leadership training class which met once or twice a week.
Attendance in the class fluctuated from seven to over 20.

Brother Brazle attended chapel regularly at the college, taught
high school Bible at Western (1973-84), and taught several Bible
classes to the college classes during the last four or five years
here: Preacher's Life and Work, the Missions Class, Christian Home
(Clinton & Delma Brazle). In addition, he was a co-ordinator for
the A.C.T.S. program.

Faye Brazle conducted a special class for the young ladies called
the Dorcas Class at her home. After she passed away and Brother
Brazle married again, his wife Delma taught a girls' class at their
home for five or six years.

Brother Brazle was a member of the board of directors of Western
Christian College (1971-84) and served as chairman twice (1973-74,
1980 84).

Clinton and Delma Brazle conducted approximately 18 Marriage
Encounter weekends at various places, over 65 Family Enrichment
Seminars (1974-84) and several Engagement Encounter weekends at
their home. They had a Family Enrichment Seminar in Vienna,
Austria, and a Marriage Encounter weekend in Belgium. This was the
first Marriage Encounter weekend conducted by churches of Christ in
Europe.

Brother Brazle went to India twice. In 1970, he was there for three
months and taught at the Alpha Bible College. In 1975, he and his
wife Delma spent two months in India. While there this time he
gathered research material for his Master's thesis: Church Growth
in North-East India.

In 1981, he was chosen Alumnus of the Year by the Stillwater church
who choose annually an outstanding alumnus from Oklahoma State
University.

Brother Brazle treasures highly memories of his work with the Young
Timothys while living at North Weyburn. Many of his boys are the
leaders of the church in western Canada and the northern states of
the U.S.A. Second of importance to him was his part in training the
missionary apprentices through the A.C.T.S. program.

He believes that the work of the college is "vital to the ongoing
and growth of the church" in western Canada.

JOHN STANLEY CLOSE
John Stanley Close (b. 1936) is the second child of John and Lois
Close of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He received his elementary and
secondary education in Winnipeg. His post secondary education is
extensive: United College in Winnipeg (1954-55); University of
Manitoba (1955-56, 1957-58); Abilene Christian College
(1965-January 1968, Bachelor of Science degree); University of
Texas, Austin (1968-73, Ph.D. in physical chemistry); University of
Regina (three night classes and fall semester 1977), these were
methods classes required for his Professional A teaching
certificate.

Jack married Carolyn Ann McCurdy in 1966 and adopted her children
Cindy and Allen. Carolyn and Cindy passed away in September 1967,
in an unfortunate car-pedestrian accident. Jack married Karen
Westerman in January 1969, and two children were born to this
union: Kristi (1974), and John (1976). Jack was employed at Canada
Packers, Winnipeg as laboratory technician (1956-57, 1958-63) and
since that time at Western Christian College except when on
educational leave. At the coIlege, his service has been varied:
dormitory, director, Hanes Hall (1963-65, 1974-76); intramural
activities and chorus (1963-65); teacher (1963-65, 1973-89); and
principal/academic dean (1985-89). His main teaching subjects have
been physics, chemistry, science, and algebra. Jack introduced
computer science to the college and computerized the academic
office (1985-89).

While at Western, Jack also taught two annual Bible classes, "The
Christian and Modern Morals" and "Developing a Strong Personal
Faith."

As a member of the local church of Christ congregation, Jack served
as a deacon (1975-89) in charge of church family life and has
taught adult Bible classes, the book of James (three times),
developing faith, church fellowship (two times).

When I asked him what honours he has received in his life, he
mentioned a rather unique one: At Abilene Christian College, Jack
was the only student on the Dean's Honour Roll and on Scholastic
Probation at the same time! Although he had obtained a high enough
grade point average to qualify for the honour roll, his overall
G.P.A. was low because of his former University of Manitoba marks.

Jack Close admits a great satisfaction with teaching the class,
"Developing a Strong Personal Faith". He considers himself
fortunate to work with Christian students and to have the
opportunity to bring elements of the Christian faith into all his
classes. He loves teaching!

"John Close is recognized by the University of Regina and by the
Saskatchewan Department of Education as a very efficient and
dedicated educator."

KAREN WESTERMAN CLOSE
Karen Close (b 1948), born in Highland Park, Michigan, is the
daughter of George and Virginia Westerman. She received her
elementary and high school education at Highland Park, and then
attended Harding University (Arkansas) for two years. In 1983, she
received her Associate of Arts degree at Western Christian College.
Karen married John S. Close on January 17, 1969. She has three
children, Allen (1962 a stepson), Kristi (1974), and John (1976).

Her early work experience was as secretary for an automotive
company (six months) and as secretary to the president of the _Firm
Foundation_ while she lived with her husband in Austin, Texas.
After Jack and Karen, and son Allen, moved to Western Christian
College, she assisted her husband when he was dormitory director of
Hanes Hall (1974-76). In 1976, she became dean of College Hall.
Karen held that position until 1989, and the college moved to
Dauphin.

As a dormitory director, she urged that the life skills program be
given a definite time on the college timetable. As a result of her
urging, one hour on Wednesday afternoon and another half hour each
Sunday night were set aside for this purpose. In addition, Karen
values her development of the "cope group". There she worked with
the children of alcoholics, drug addicts, divorced parents, and
with abused children. At first, there were only girls in the group
but later boys, at their request, were allowed to join. Karen is
happy to have had a "small part" in helping teenage girls mature
into woman hood.

The 1986 college yearbook was dedicated to Karen Close. The final
words of the dedication read as follows: "This yearbook is
dedicated to Mrs. Close in appreciation for all the hard work she
has done both in the dormitory and for W.C.C. As well as being a
terrific dorm mother, she is a dedicated wife and mother. You are
very special to the girls, Mrs. Close, and your service to them
will not be forgotten. May the Lord continue to bless you as you
have blessed others!!!"

VELDA HOCKLEY COULTER
Marion Velda May Coulter was born in 1923, at Bengough,
Saskatchewan. She is the only child of William and Roseanna Hockley
(now deceased). She first came in contact with the church of Christ
at a gospel meeting conducted by J. C. Bailey in 1929, at a country
school near Bengough. Her father had been baptized a number of
years previously at Yellow Grass by an evangelist who, during his
meetings there, converted 65 people.

Velda received her elementary and secondary education at Bengough,
then she attended Normal School in Regina (1941-42). In 1986, she
received her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of
Regina. She has also studied courses from the University of
Saskatchewan and the University of Waterloo.

In 1949, at Moose Jaw, she married Stanley Coulter and they had six
children: Rosemary (b 1950 - d 1967), Ruth (1951), Betty (1953),
William (Bill) (1955), Hope (1959), and Leslie (1965). After
teaching school many years, Stanley passed away in December 1985,
at Weyburn.

Velda taught school in various locations of Southern Saskatchewan:
Knoxville (1941), Harptree (1942-45), Moose Jaw area (1945-46),
Crestwynd (1946-49), Kildeer (1957-58), Kisbey (1961-62), and Lake
Alma (1965-67). Then became assistant librarian and teacher at
Western Christian College (1976-86). Velda has also sold real
estate in Regina (1969-71) and at Weyburn (1987- ). In Weyburn, she
sold Electrolux for three to four years. Velda and Stan Coulter and
family moved to Weyburn in 1972, so that it would be easier for the
children to attend Western Christian College.

In church and community service, Velda has taught at vacation Bible
school in Bengough and Moose Jaw, has assisted in provincial and
federal election campaigns (1967-72) in Regina, and has cared for
foster children (1967-75) in both Regina and Weyburn.

Velda is proud of her children and pleased with the growth and
change within herself since she became a licensed realtor in 1988.
Her chief enjoyment is derived from private Bible study.

At Western, Velda enjoyed the students, their openness, their
impulsiveness and lack of inhi bitions. She also appreciated the
Oriental respect for age and authority. Her favourite teaching
subjects were typing and E.S.L. (English as a second language).

Velda has two regrets about Western. She regrets the move to
Dauphin, believing that the bargain in buildings is not a bargain
when the location of the city is considered. She also regrets not
taking more time to become better acquainted with the staff. Yet,
during her Western days, Velda was a very busy woman. In addition
to teaching, she was studying university courses and visited her
husband daily at the Souris Valley Extended Care Hospital for four
years prior to his death in 1985.

MICHAEL WADE ENSLEY
Michael Wade Ensley, born in 1946 at Colfax, Washington state, is
the only son of Bennett and Aline Ensley. He received his
elementary and secondary education at Arlington, Virginia. His
university education was obtained at several institutions: Central
Wesleyan University in South Carolina (1955-56); David Lipscomb
College in Nashville, Tennessee (B.A. in European history 1968);
Vanderbilt University at Nashville (M.A., 1969); Harding Graduate
School in Memphis (1969-70); University of Portland, Oregon
(library science, summers 1971, 1972); and University of Regina
(summer, 1974).

Michael married Sandra Whitehead of Atlanta, Georgia, on March 14,
1970. They have two sons, Henry (February 7, 1974) and Harold
(December 10, 1976).

Before immigrating to Canada, Michael had been employed as a
graduate assistant at David Lipscomb College and as a teacher and
assistant librarian at Columbia Christian College, Oregon
(1970-73). He taught World Civilization and the History of the
United States of America at Columbia.

At Western Christian College, Michael was chief librarian and a
teacher. He taught both high school and college history. On the
college level, he taught church history, European history, American
history, Canadian history and philosophy. The Canadian history
class was accredited by the University of Regina in 1980.

In volunteer activities, Michael has served as an aide to a U.S.
senator in Tennessee, worked with the peace movement in U.S.A., and
has had political involvement in election campaigns in both Canada
and the United States.

For the Weyburn Church of Christ congregation, he has taught adult
Bible classes and was convenor of the church visitation program
(1978-81).

In the area of honours and awards, he was chosen as the best
student in Christian education, has belonged to a History Honour
Society, and was chosen as Teacher of the Year at Columbia
Christian College (1970-71). In March 1972, he was chosen to
organize a tour group from Columbia to go to Washington, D.C., and
while there he taught a course in American government.

At Western Christian College, Michael is pleased to have upgraded
the library of the college so that its standard is above the
require ments for the programs offered. It gives him a certain
satisfaction to have taught an accredited university course in
Canadian history when he is self-taught in that subject.
Michael Ensley enjoys Western's students and he appreciates
bringing up his family in rural Saskatchewan.

SANDRA WHITEHEAD ENSLEY
Sandra Ensley (b 1948) is the second daughter of Harold and
Margaree Whitehead. She was born in San Jose, California. Sandy
received her elementary and secondary education at Sylvan Hill in
Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated from David Lipscomb College in
Nashville, Tennessee (1970, B.S. in music education), and the
University of Brandon in 1985. From Brandon, she received her
Master's degree in music education. In addition, she had studied
some classes at the University of Portland, Oregon (1970-71).

In 1970, Sandy married Michael Wade Ensley. They have two sons,
Henry (1974) and Harold (1976), both born at Weyburn, Saskatchewan.

Sandy was employed by Bell Telephone Companies a total of six years
with experience in Atlanta, Memphis, and Portland. While at
Portland, she also taught part-time at Columbia Christian High
School (1970-71).

In 1973, Sandy began teaching at Western Christian College and
continued to teach there as long as the college remained in North
Weyburn except for her one year of educational leave to attend the
University of Brandon. During her teaching years at Western, she
has taught band, science, social studies, typing, computer
applications, computer science, and English. She was the first band
teacher at Western (1974-89).

At her home congregations in Atlanta, Nashville, Portland, and
Weyburn, Sandy has taught children's Bible classes. She has also
been active in vacation Bible schools and in summer camp work.

In addition, Sandy has participated actively in several community
organizations, as president of the University Women's Club of
Weyburn (1975-76), as a member of the W.C.C. Women's Service Club,
as president of the Weyburn Music Festival Association (1988-89),
as band representative for the south-east region in the
Saskatchewan Music Educators' Association (1986-88), and as group
leader for the Weyburn Weight Watchers' Club.

Sandy was honoured by election to Who's Who in American
Universities and Colleges (1970). In 1984, she was awarded an
assistant ship at the University of Brandon and placed on the
Dean's Honour Roll. In 1987, she presented her thesis at the
National Convention of Canadian Music Educators at Saskatoon. Her
thesis, "The Significance of Johan Huizinga's Study of a Play
Element in Culture for Music Education" was published in condensed
form in the Canadian Journal of Research in Music Education. That
article was later reprinted in Ostinato, a journal with music for
children, published in Ontario. The 1988 yearbook staff at Western
Christian College dedicated its publi cation to Sandy.

A personal note from Sandy: She has very pleasant memories of
students who have assumed responsibility in band activities far
beyond the call of duty. Further pleasant memories are of the
thrilling moments when the band performance reached unexpected
heights of quality. She has also been delighted to witness the
growth and development of her students as revealed in essays.

MILDRED JACOBS GOODWIN
Mildred Doris Goodwin (b 1933) is the second child of Clarence and
Hannah Jacobs. She was born on her parents' farm near Minton,
Saskatchewan. She received her education, at three country schools:
Three Lakes, Glen Curren near Minton, and Patriotic near McCord.

In 1950, she married Gordon Goodwin. Her wedding was held on the
farm of her uncle and aunt, Earl and Muriel Jacobs near McCord. Six
children were born to the Goodwins: Gayle (1951), Mavis (1953),
Lonnie (1955), Twyla (1956), Lola (1958), and Brenda (1959).
Before her marriage, Mildred had been employed at the Union
Hospital in Moose Jaw. During the years 1950-69, she was a farm
wife at McCord and raised six children. In 1969, the Goodwins moved
to the college and for the next 20 years she was employed most of
the time in Morgan Cafeteria (1969-74 cook, 1974-82 co manager and
cook, 1983-86 co-manager and cook, 1988-89 manager). From 1986 to
1989, she also was caretaker of the Weyburn school unit office.

During her years at Western, the cafeteria was run efficiently and
many compliments have been received for the well-cooked and tasty
meals.

Much of her spare time has been occupied with the usual grandmother
concerns as she has five grandchildren living in Weyburn and 15
elsewhere (includes three step grandchildren). She was convenor for
the ladies' fellow ship meetings of the Weyburn congregation for
four years and also finds time to deliver Meals on-Wheels and visit
the nursing home.

Personal note: Mildred has enjoyed her years of contact with
Western's students. She says that she becomes wrapped up in their
lives and misses them when they graduate. She has also appreciated
working with the Christian staff in a happy, pleasant atmosphere.

CAROLINE PETERSON HARVEY
Caroline Lee Harvey (1942) is the daughter of Everette and Minnie
Peterson of Powell, Wyoming. She received her high school and
elementary school education at Powell.

In 1964, Carol married John Harvey at Hartville, Wyoming. They have
three children: Janna (1967), John J. (1969), and James (Jamie)
(1970). After their marriage, they lived at Cheyenne, Wyoming
(1964-66); at San Diego, California (1966-67 school year); Bozeman,
Montana (1967-71); and at Byron, Wyoming (1971-72), before they
moved to North Weyburn in the summer of 1972.

Before her marriage, Carol was employed as cashier (1960-62) by the
Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company in Cheyenne, and as
executive secretary (1962-64) to the Commissioner of Agriculture
for the state of Wyoming at Cheyenne.

At Western Christian College she has been employed as dormitory
director at College Hall (1973-74), substitute in cafeteria, in
classroom and in the academic office (1974-79), as part time
secretary (1979-82) to President Max Mowrer, and as executive
secretary (1982- ) to the president. In her post as executive
secretary to Vince Anderson, she is responsible for all logistics
of special events such as lectureship, homecoming, youth rally,
college graduation, and shares the responsibility of high school
graduation with the academic secretary. She is also in charge of
the office in the absence of the president and of all ordinary
decisions even when he is present.

Carol was volunteer dormitory mother (1972-73) of Hanes Hall. She
and her husband were in charge of youth worship at the Weyburn
congre gation for two years.

She has delivered Meals-on-Wheels for the city, been president of
the local chapter of the Women's Service Club, and has entertained
many students. She considers her greatest community service to be
her "foster parenting". She cared for three newborn infants during
1977-79.

Carol believes that the greatest blessing of her years at Western
is becoming a member of an extended family. This extended family is
precious because her natural family lives far away. Another
blessing is the development of a large network of close friends
that extends across Canada and into northwestern U.S.A. Wherever
she travels, there are friends.

JOHN HARVEY
John Harvey, born in 1939 at Torrington, Wyoming, is the only son
of John and Pauline Harvey. He received his elementary and
secondary education at Guernsey, Wyoming. His post secondary
education was taken at three institutions: University of Wyoming at
Laramie (1957-62 B.A. in education), University of San Diego,
California (1966-67 M.A.T), and the Montana State University (1967-
71 Ph.D in mathematics).

In 1964, John Harvey married Caroline Peterson of Powell, Wyoming.
They have three children, Janna (1967), John J. (1969), and James
(Jamie) (1970).

John Harvey was employed as a junior high school mathematics
teacher at Cheyenne, Wyoming (1962-66), did odd jobs (1971-72), and
at Western Christian College from 1972 onward. While at Western, he
has taught all the different mathematics courses at one time or
another, biology (several years), Bible (12 years), English (one
semester), and some physical education.

During his years at Western, he has coached football (seven years),
girls' volleyball (four years), and has been grade 12 class sponsor
for nine years.

Mr. Harvey was a deacon of the Weyburn church (1985-88) in charge
of the education program and became an elder in 1988. He has taught
Bible classes for the Weyburn congregation, (grade school, high
school, and adult classes). John and Carol were in charge of the
youth worship for two years.

He has been president of the Weyburn Teachers' Association for two
terms (1977-78, 1980-81) and has served on the Teachers' Convention
Committee. He considers his greatest honours to be his three
academic degrees from three different universities.

Personal note: John Harvey appreciates hearing the visiting alumni
admit that the college has changed their lives by pointing them in
the right direction, and also hearing the alumni say that they
desire the staff and faculty to continue in their task of educating
young people.

DONALD CHARLES HUSBAND
Donald Charles Husband, born in 1952 in Wawota, Saskatchewan, is
the eldest of five children born to Doris and George Husband. He
began his elementary education in the one-room Model School with
Arzetta Perry as his teacher. He finished his elementary education
at the Wawota School, attending there until 1969.

Donald attended Western Christian College for grade 11 and 12, plus
one year of Junior College, completing this facet of his education
in 1972. He has since attended the University of Saskatchewan for
one year (74-75) and went on to receive his Bachelor of Teaching
from Brandon University in 1978. In the spring of 1989, he took the
power engineering course which enables him to hold a Class 5 Power
Engineering Certificate. He obtained his journeyman carpenter
certificate by attending SIAST in Saskatoon in the fall of 1989.
Presently he is working on an electrician course through the
International Correspondence School.

Donald's work experience began on the Husband farm in Wawota where
many skills were developed working with the cattle and handling
machinery on the land. In the summer of 1972 he took the
opportunity of going to Yellowknife, N.W.T. working there on
construc tion under the foremanship of Mel Jacobs. It was tough
work that summer laying 22 cement foundations for housing but it
instilled the desire for more carpentry work later. At various
later times he worked in the carpentry field with Dueck
Construction and Redekopp Construction both located in Wawota. The
skills he gained in the employ of these men, who believed in him,
always encouraging him to perform to the best of his ability. These
experiences instilled in Don the desire to pass on his knowledge
and his superior level of diligence to the student workers he now
encounters at Western Christian College.

Donald married Loreen Kroeker on December 2, 1978 in Brandon where
they had both attended University. They have been blessed with two
daughters; Heidi Loreen born April 7, 1980 and Maria Ruth born
April 8, 1982. This family was joined in February of 1985 by a
chosen son, Benjamin born December 14, 1984. In 1979, Don took a
job teaching grades 5 and 6 in Mankota, Saskatchewan. However,
concluding that teaching was not his ideal career, Don readily
accepted the opportunity offered to, him by J. C. Murray in the
spring of 1981 to work in the maintenance department at Western
Christian College where he is still employed. His wife Loreen has
joined him in his work at Western working from 1983-1988 in the stu
dent center and more recently teaching in the high school since
1992.

Church activities and involvement have played a significant role in
Don's life over the years. The Wawota congregation encouraged its
young men to be speakers and teachers. Many lessons were learned,
developed and taught in his growing up years in this congregation.
In 1972 he had the opportunity to travel to India with both J.C.
Bailey and David McMillan teaching and preaching the New Testament
to many willing listeners. Don also spent the summer of 1978 in
Belgium with a team headed by Paul Brazle, spreading the message of
the church's willingness to study with interested participants.
Congregations such as Weyburn, Yellowknife, Saskatoon, Brandon,
Horse Creek and now Dauphin have been places of mutual
encouragement while working and worshipping together. Don is
presently the deacon in charge of the children's education program
in the Dauphin Church of Christ.

Interests and activities in the community include curling with the
Dauphin Men's Curling Club, playing slow pitch ball, supporting his
son's efforts in minor hockey and assisting Theatre Amisk, the
local theater group, with its musical productions. He also enjoys
cross-country skiing on all of the beautiful trails located in
parks surrounding Dauphin.

FLOYD RANDAL JACOBS
Floyd Randal Jacobs is the eighth son of Lewis and Ollie Jacobs. He
was born on the farm near Minton, Saskatchewan, in March 1924. He
received his education at the local country school and attended
three winters at the Radville Bible School. After marriage and
quitting farming, he studied a carpenter's course (1967-68) at the
Weyburn Community College.

On June 16, 1951, Floyd Jacobs married Marion Joy Tetreau from the
Horse Creek area of Saskatchewan. They have four children: Dwayne
(1952), Lewis (1953), Shelley (1959), and Randal (1962).

Floyd operated the family farm near Minton from 1940 to 1952,
except during one winter (1950) when he was employed at the
Marshall Wells Warehouse in Regina. In 1952, he and his young wife
moved to a farm at Wellen, Manitoba. At Western Christian College
(1968 89), he was employed as stationary engineer and plumber.
During 20 years of employment at the college, he drove the school
bus for campus children attending school in Weyburn.

Floyd Jacobs has shown an active interest in community affairs
throughout his adult life by serving as secretary of the Glen
Curren School (five to six years), as a member of the school board
at Wellen, Manitoba (three years), as a volunteer fireman in
Weyburn (five to six years), as assistant coach of children's
baseball in Weyburn (three years), and as a councilor for the
hamlet of North Weyburn (seven years). Furthermore, he served as a
deacon of the Weyburn church (1969-77) and as an elder of the
church (1977-89).

The alumni of Western Christian College honoured Floyd Jacobs by
choosing him as Alumnus of the Year 1981.

Personal note: Floyd has a sense of satisfaction in having upgraded
the condition of the equipment in the furnace and boiler rooms
during his years of employment at Western. He has driven the
students in the college bus on chorus tours and to many athletic
events. During all those bus rides, he has not been sorry that he
went with the young people anywhere.

(P.S. Floyd started school for me in my first school near Minton in
1930! L.M.T.)

MARION TETREAU JACOBS
Marion Joy Jacobs was born January 10, 1930, at Meyronne,
Saskatchewan. Her parents are Robert and Nellie Tetreau. She
attended Lark Hill country school, Radville Christian College
(1948-49 commercial course), and the Moose Jaw Business College
(1949, fall semester).

On June 16, 1951, she married Floyd Randal Jacobs of Minton,
Saskatchewan. Their children, are Dwayne (1952), Lewis (1953),
Shelley (1959), and Randal (1962).

Before her marriage, Marion was employed at Simpson's, Regina
(1950-51 March), in the payroll department. Then for 15 years she
was a farm lady at Willen, Manitoba (1952-67). At Western Christian
College, she served in the cafeteria as a cook (1967-86) and as
co-manager (1974-86). She worked as a seamstress at Taylor Nooks,
North Weyburn (1986-89).

In the community and church area, Marion has taught children's
Bible classes at both Manson and Weyburn, cooked and taught at
Clearview Christian Camp (five or more summers), has been an active
member of the Women's Service Club (1967-89), and was coordinator
for the Meals-on-Wheels at Weyburn (two and one half years). For
her labours in the Meals-on-Wheels program, she has received an
Appreciation Certificate from the Weyburn Home Care Association.

Personal note: Marion says that feelings of depression were short-
lived when in contact with the college young people. They have a
natural "lift-me-up" quality she says. Marion has also appreciated
the happy, pleasant atmosphere in her work place--The Morgan
Cafeteria.

RICHARD CRAIG KIRKPATRICK
Richard Craig Kirkpatrick was born on February 6, 1952, at Exeter,
California. His parents are Billy Wayne and Verna Ruth
Kirkpatrick. Following his early education at Exeter, he attended
Abilene Christian University (1973-76) and graduated with a
Bachelor of Science degree in Education. In 1983, he obtained his
Master of Education degree from the same institution.

In 1976, Dick married Nancy Sue Tatko. They have three daughters:
Cherish Nicole (1977), Laurel Aime (1980), and Leisel Ciel (1984).

For two years, while attending university, Dick worked as
firefighter for California Division of Forestry during the summer
vacations.

Following graduation from Abilene Christian University in 1976,
Dick Kirkpatrick moved to the Western Christian College campus to
teach there until 1989, except for one year of education leave
(1982-83). His teaching was mainly in the fields of biology and
physical education. He coached a variety of team sports: girls'
volleyball, girls' basketball, track and field, badminton, and
softball. During the last few years at Western, he devoted more
time to coaching boys' teams. For four years (1985-89) Dick was
vice-principal of the college.

Dick was chosen as a deacon of the Weyburn congregation in 1985,
and worked with the missions committee. He taught the junior high
school Bible class on Wednesday nights for seven years.

Dick's success and interest in team sports began in his high school
years. At that time he was chosen as the most valuable player on
the football team. In university, he was on the first team All-
Conference and was selected as the most valuable player (defensive
back) in the football team. In 1982, he coached the girls'
basketball team at Western that won the provincials. In 1987, he
coached the boys' provincial champion volleyball team and in 1988,
he coached the boys' basketball team to win the provincial
championship.

Dick admits great satisfaction with his coaching experience at the
college. In his view, coaching a team sport offers a first-hand
opportunity to help mould the characters of young people. He
considers that his teaching experience has benefitted himself as
well, because he had gained strength and expertise in handling
young people.

DAVID FRANKLIN LIDBURY
David Franklin Lidbury (b 1935) is the son of Jim and Pearl Lidbury

history. He worked within the organization of Saskatchewan Private
Schools for increased financial assistance form the department of
education, inaugurated the junior college liberal arts and advanced
Bible programs, and negotiated with the University of Regina for
one year of classes to be accredited.

Since he resigned in 1976, David has been principal of a school at

weatherworn buildings, upgrading the skating rink so that it became
a suitable facility for lectureship and graduations, the obtaining
of the new water distribution system (1984), and the organization
of the hamlet of North Weyburn (December 1981). In addition, he
was in charge of Western's four major annual events: lectureship,

a student, J. C. Murray showed a special talent for getting things
done as he organized the students to renovate a building for a
student centre. In 1960, the building was officially opened with
one room named the J. C. Murray Lounge.

Personal note: J. C. has gained much satisfaction from helping with
the annual musical (five to six years), and the Sonshine singing
group (seven to eight years). He also spent good years working
with the A.C.T.S. program and the Brazle family. Among J. C.'s
unforgettable moments are the beautiful devotions with the students
when travelling to singing appointments.

LORRAINE MORGAN MURRAY
Lorraine Murray's (b 1942) parents are Ross and Jennie Morgan. She
was born at Barman, Manitoba, and received her elementary education
in a nearby country school and her high school at Carman. She
graduated as valedictorian from the commercial course at Western
Christian College in 1960.

On October 13, 1962, Lorraine married John C. Murray and they have
three children: Darla (1964), Rhonda (1966), and Randal (1970),
all graduates of Western.

Lorraine worked in the business office and post office at Western
Christian College (1960-62) prior to her marriage. While the
Murrays were living in Glasgow, Montana, she was payroll clerk and
assistant bookkeeper for Morgen & Oswood Construction Co., a
general contractor (1962-66), except for six months pregnancy
leave.

At Weyburn, she was been employed as church secretary (1968-69) and
as secretary in the principal's office (1970-89).

Lorraine taught Bible Classes at Glasgow, Weyburn, Radville and at
Clearview Christian Camp. For 20 years she has been a member of
the Women's Service Club and served as secretary of the local
organization for two terms. She also serves as secretary of the
North Weyburn hamlet (1982-89).

Besides the daily and monthly routines of attendance, grades, and
other regular secretarial duties, Lorraine was responsible for the
organization and proper functioning of college graduation, high
school graduation, and farewell/awards night. She is a very
capable and efficient secretary and her office has been a smooth-
running operation. Principals and faculty are very fortunate to
have had her in charge.

In addition, Lorraine enjoyed very much her daily contact with the
students. It is always good to note their growing toward maturity
from grade 10 to the senior class. It is truly a good experience
to belong to the Western family of staff and students.

Lorraine has been a faithful fan at athletic events throughout the
years.

CONRAD ROLAND OLSON
Roland Olson (b 1932) is the second son of Robert and Martha Olson,
now deceased. He was born on the family homestead near Wynyard,
Saskatchewan.

After completing his elementary education at the Rushville country
school and the Wynyard town school, he attended Nutana Collegiate
in Saskatoon. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan
with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966, and a Bachelor of Education
degree in 1967. Since graduation he has taken art, drawing and art
history classes at summer schools at the University of Saskatchewan
(1972, 1973), at the University of Regina (1977, 1982), and at the
School of Arts at Fort San. He has also attended art seminars and
short courses sponsored by the Weyburn Community College.

In 1953, Roland married Lois Margaret Orr. They have seven
children: Catherine (1955), Wilfred (1957), Marjorie (1959),
Bernard (1960), Sharon (1962), Conrad (1966) and Stephanie (1970).

Roland Olson was a draftsman for the Saskatoon Oil Refinery (1955-
1965), a teacher at Clavet (1967-69) and at Western Christian
College (1969-1989). At Western his main teaching fields have been
art, industrial arts, and chemistry. He was the first art teacher
at Western, introducing that subject in 1973.

While at the college, Roland coached or managed the boys' hockey
team for 18 years and the girl's hockey team for two years. During
those years the boys returned to the Olson home after almost every
game for lunch. Fresh homemade cinnamon buns were a specialty.

For many years, Roland and Lois taught the grades 3 and 4 Bible
classes at the Weyburn Church of Christ. He taught vacation Bible
school at Wawota and Clearview Christian Camp at Kenosee. After he
retired from Western Christian College, he was selected as an elder
at the Weyburn church.

Roland served on the Weyburn Arts Council for two years. His works
of art toured the province in 1983. He won first place in 1989 at
the regional contest sponsored by the Organization of Saskatchewan
Arts Councils. He has been on the N.D.P. Constituency Executive
for 15 years and on the provincial council for two years.

Roland Olson's life on the college campus has brought many
satisfactions: the satisfaction from welding the hockey boys into
a co-operative unit, witnessing the forward strides of the projects
in the industrial arts classes, the proximity of the art facility
enabling him to spend many after-class hours there with his
students, his own personal development in the fields of pottery and
photography, helping to renovate the building that became a modern
up-to-date art facility (Sinclair Vocational Arts Building), and
finally the very pleasant community atmosphere. Roland treasures
his memories of a fine relationship with his Chinese students.
Some of his best art students have been Chinese. During
preparations for the annual "Oriental Night," the Chinese students
frequently sought his advice in decorating and stage production.

Roland was elected to the North Weyburn hamlet council in 1989.

DANIEL AND CLARA PAULS
Daniel Pauls (July 13, 1916) and Clara May Jacques (May 4, 1925)
were married August 28, 1943. Children born to this union and
their spouses all born again in Christ and faithful in His service:
Ronald Wayne (July 2, 1944) married Rita Grace McIroy (October 7,
1942) on June 4, 1965; Eleanor Joyce (December 10, 1946) married
Daniel Russel McIntee (February 8, 1946) on October 16, 1971;
Carole Joanne (May 3, 1948) married Timothy Albert Cook (April 27,
1949) on December 24, 1970; Marlene Jean (July 25, 1952) married
Carlos George Ashby (July 15, 1948) on August 26, 1972); Bernice
June (June 30, 1957) married Paul Michael Lickman (March 25, 1957)
on June 5, 1979.

We have 13 grandchildren and none have married as of this date
(1991) and so we look forward with anticipation to another
generation of Christians.

"Thanks to the environment of Western Christian College." How has
all this become reality in the history of Western Christian
College?

Once upon a tine there was a young Christian man who besought the
Lord for an help meet and how this could be accomplished in his
life.

The Lord made it possible in a year or so for him to meet a fine
Christian girl during the process of delivering milk from house to
house.

While delivering milk at the hospital one morning there was a young
lady at work, (just back from her holidays) who waited on him and
he was so impressed that he made a bold prediction to his helper
after the delivery and said, "That is my girl." They became quite
interested in each other's companionship and decided to go to
Radville Winter Bible School together under the direction of
Wilfred Orr.

In the spring they returned to their jobs not understanding the
full blessings of being together for five months, but they
continued their companionship as best they could. However the bond
that had developed between them must have been what people call
"being in love." Being convinced that this was God's will for
them, this young man mad the bold approach of asking this lady to
marry him and would you believe it, she accepted the proposal
without reservations.

Guess Who? "Clara and Daniel" and the live happily ever after to
see 25 Christians with the potential of tripling that in the next
decade.

I was born on a homestead near Chinook, Montana, being the seventh
child of the family.

I remember moving to Winkler, Manitoba when I was six years old and
started to school. I enjoyed school while it lasted with math and
spelling being my favourite subjects. My school life terminated
with grade seven and I entered the labour force and being among
mature people I learned quite young to accept responsibility.

During these years I sought after a better way of life and accepted
Jesus as my Lord and Saviour in 1940. Three years later I met
Clara, an orphaned young Christian lady from Haywood, Manitoba.
Clara had taken her grade eight which terminated her education for
much the same reason of becoming responsible for her own support.

We were married August 28, 1943, just taking off the weekend to
have a small wedding in Winnipeg with $80 to conquer the whole
world.

We managed a dairy farm for my uncle for several years. During
this time Ronald and Eleanor were born.

After that we bought homestead rights to a quarter section of
wooded land in northern Ontario. Carole was born just before we
moved to Amesdale, Ontario north of Dryden, Ontario, 1948.

I had to go to Winnipeg and work in construction each summer to
subsidize our income on the homestead. Marlene was born in
Winnipeg in 1952.

With four children in our care we had to look for more permanent
income and so moved back to Carman, Manitoba where I was in full-
time construction work with Custom Built Homes.

We bought a small house in Carman where Bernice was born in 1957
and lived there until we moved to Western Christian College, 1960.

We were still working on our first million dollars and were
struggling to make it possible for our children to receive a better
education than what we had and so we scrimped and saved for Ron to
be able to attend Western Christian College. Ron even worked to
earn his tuition for the first year. This brings to mind an
incident that happened during the first school year 1958-59.

Western was very prompt in letting us know when we got behind with
our account and also made sure that we received their pink
envelopes asking for donations.

It so happened that we were a bit late in sending our regular $50
a month for room and board. In a hurry to get it there on time so
Ron would not be disqualified to write his final exams, we mailed
it in a Western (pink) envelope. Lo and behold we received a thank
you card for the donation we had made.

However being too proud to admit that it was a payment on our
account, Western was $50 richer and for us it meant another week of
hard labour. That was just a small sacrifice along with many more
that supported the good work at Western.

We worked in different capacities at Western for 14 years where our
children graduated from high school before going on to higher
education and living successful lives.

In 1974 we moved to Beamsville, Ontario where I actually became
self-employed doing carpet and upholstery cleaning.

Our basic outlook on life was not a striving after the riches of
the world, but our security was in the Lord, and He has blessed us
with a family not only in flesh and blood but in the Spirit serving
the Lord and mankind.

Our involvement has been more in church related activities, having
served as an elder at Weyburn and Grimsby. We are presently wor
shipping with the Beamsville church family.

However we still have fond memories of friends we left at Western
and we enjoy going back whenever we can.

If there are any outstanding events during our life at Western we
hope they are recorded in heaven.

I would claim some achievement in restoring the old air force
barracks into practical living quarters and workable facilities for
14 years.

JAMES EDWARD PENNINGTON
James Edward Pennington (b 1935) is the son of Oscar and Audrey
Pennington. He received his elementary and secondary education at
Oklahoma City. His post secondary education was taken at several
institutions: Oklahoma Christian College, Bartlesville (1953-54),
Abilene Christian College (1954-58, B.A. in Bible), Abilene
Christian College (1964, M.A. in Bible), and Abilene Christian
College (1971-74, Master of Divinity). In Canada, he has attended
classes at Regent College, Vancouver; the University of Regina; and
the Canadian Theological College in Regina.

In 1956, James Pennington married Raymona Weir of Cordell,
Oklahoma. They have five sons: David (1959), James (1961), Paul
(1964), Nathan (1967), and John (1971).

While attending university at Abilene, he preached at Burkett,
Texas (1958-60), and at Eastland, Texas (1971-74). The Penningtons
lived at Haskell, Texas, where he preached (1960-65) and attended
some summer classes and short sessions at Abilene Christian
College.

Jim Pennington's move to Canada came in 1965. He preached for the
Estevan congregatio'n until he became head of the newly-formed
Bible department at Western Christian College in 1968. He
maintained that position for more than 12 years. He taught Bible
classes from 1968 to 1989, except for the three years while he was
at Eastland and the fall semester (1987) while studying in Regina.
In addition, he taught extension Bible classes at Wawota and
Gravelbourg.

Mr. Pennington has been the college class sponsor (15 years) and a
"missionary" among the Chinese high school students. Because these
students arrive in Canada with an inadequate knowledge of the
English language, it is difficult for them to benefit from the
regular Bible classes. Mr. Pennington has taught them in a special
Bible class at the college for about 15 years. Furthermore the
Pennington home, together with the Dan and Vivian Dunn home, has
provided a "home away from home" for the Chinese students. Mr.
Pennington's communications class is accredited by the University
of Regina.

He spends four to eight weeks each year travelling in Tennessee,
Kansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, Texas, and Oklahoma raising money
for the Bible department. During the rest of the year, he keeps in
contact with the donors by mail.

During Jim Pennington's more than 20 years in western Canada, he
has been guest preacher, vacation Bible school teacher, workshop
speak er, lectureship speaker, and regular Bible class teacher in
many places for many congregations. He has held gospel meetings at
Manson, Brandon, Winnipeg, Gravelbourg, Calgary, and Lloydminster;
he has conducted vacation Bible school at Perryville, Horse Creek,
Spruston Road, Yorkton, and Lloydminster; he has preached for
longer periods of time in Yorkton and Radville; he has participated
in the annual lectureship at Western Christian College and Great
Lakes Christian College; and he was organizer of the first annual
workshop at Bismarck, North Dakota. During these more than 20
years, he has been pleased to have played the dual role of preacher
and teacher.

Mr. Pennington was honoured to receive an appreciation plaque from
the college class and to be the guest of honour at a "Roast" during
a college function.

Mr. Pennington considers that the opportunity for staff to live on
campus in larger than average size apartments has been advantageous
not only for the students but also for the brotherhood at large.
This extra space enabled the staff to entertain the students in
friendly groups and to provide hospitality to many visitors on
campus during lectureship, homecoming, and youth rally.

Truly, the rather spacious staff apartments, together with the
skating rink, have allowed the brethren in western Canada and
northwestern United States to become better acquainted. Mr.
Pennington believes that the college skating rink has been a
greater unifying force than we realize. It can easily accommodate
large crowds for lectureship, graduation, and youth rally. There
have been more than a thousand people present for lectureship.

Also, he maintains that the small college has been a blessing to
his five sons. They have been able to participate in more
activities and gain a sense of achievement not easily possible in
a large school.

RAYMONA WEIR PENNINGTON
Raymona Faye Pennington (b 1932) is the daughter of Raymond and
Olive Weir. She received her elementary and secondary education at
Cordell, Oklahoma, and at Oklahoma City. She graduated with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in English, with a minor in education, from
Abilene Christian College in Texas in 1955. In Canada, she studied
four classes at the University of Regina to receive her
Professional A teaching certificate.

In 1956, Raymona Weir married James E. Pennington. To this union
were born five sons: David (1959), James (1961), Paul (1964),
Nathan (1967), and John (1971).

In the United States, Raymona taught at Guymon, Oklahoma (1955-56),
and at Noodle Horn, Texas (1956-58). For the next number of years,
she devoted much of her time to raising five boys. When first at
Western Christian College, her teaching duties were part-time
(1968-71, 1976-81), but gradually her teaching load increased until
in 1989 she was teaching the majority of the English classes,
French, and' E.S.L. (English as a second language to the Chinese
students). Parents have suggested that Mrs. Pennington must be the
best English teacher in Saskatchewan.

Raymona's many volunteer activities have been connected either with
the church or with the college. She has taught ladies' Bible
classes and children's classes wherever she has lived since the
time of her marriage. She has taught at vacation Bible schools in
Weyburn, Horse Creek, Perryville, Brandon, Estevan, and
Lloydminster. She has participated in the visitation program of the
Weyburn church. At the college, she has served as a gracious co-
sponsor of the Chinese students and of the college class (1968-87).
Because of her beautiful singing voice, she has sung at numerous
weddings and funerals.

At university, Raymona was elected to Alpha Chi (a national honour
society), belonged to W Club (a women's honour club) and graduated
with honours.

Personal note: Raymona Pennington is delighted with the marvellous
opportunities of co-ordinating Biblical principles with her
literature lessons. Oftentimes when students study their literature
lessons, they are required to have their Bibles present too.
Annually, Raymona requests an essay, "Macbeth and the Bible" from
her grade 11 class. Sometimes the students find this work a
struggle but admit afterwards that it is a rewarding struggle.

"Precious Memories," editor of its monthly newspaper the "Trumpet,"
designed the school's original crest, and renovated the basement at
Radville into a dining room for the college and an apartment for
Lawrence and Mary Anderson. Aided by students, Roger built a
telephone system from the town of Radville to the college campus,
two miles away. Roger has fond memories of his group counselling
sessions at his home near the campus in North Weyburn.

Roger Peterson is a versatile man. At the college he has been
student, teacher, vice-principal, principal, chorus director,
psychologist, dorm supervisor, fund raiser, photographer, printer,
editor, publisher, carpenter, electrician, counsellor, sports
director, plumber, mason, gardener, telephone service man,
landscaper, and cabinet maker. For his willingness to serve
wherever needed and for his dedication to Christian principles, the
Alumni Selection Committee chose Roger Willis Peterson to be
Alumnus of the Year 1976. (See Part Four of this publication,

ways.

MARJORIE CLOSE ROBERTS
Marjorie Roberts (b 1934) was born in Detroit, Michigan, but moved
to Winnipeg, Manitoba, with her parents, John and Lois Close before
she was a year old. She received her elementary and high school
education in Winnipeg and also attended Teachers' College there
(1963-64). Since that time she has studied 11 classes at Western
Christian College, eight classes at the University of Regina and
eight classes by correspondence from the University of Waterloo.
Marjorie lacks one year from receiving a Bachelor of Arts in social
development studies from the University of Waterloo.

Marjorie Close married Albert Roberts in Winnipeg, April 6, 1953.
They have six children: Blair (1954), Kirk (1955), Kerry (1957),
Scott (1960), Debbie (1967 chosen), and Penny (1970 chosen).

Prior to her marriage, Marge worked for her father in a radio sales
and repair business. She taught grade 1 in Winnipeg for three
years. She was employed at Western Christian College for 20 years
as a dormitory parent at Torkelson Hall (1968-76) and as dean of
student life (1976 88). As dean of student life, she was in charge
of life and discipline in out-of-class hours.

Marge is a talented woman. In high school, she usually sang the
leading part in the annual musicals. At Western, she directed the
popular singing group "Sonshine" for nine years and was the faculty
assistant to the college musicals for 12 years.

While she lived in Winnipeg, she raised a number of foster children
and was involved with home and school activities. At both Winnipeg
and North Weyburn she has taught ladies' and children's Bible
classes.

As editor (1981-88) of the women's magazine "Sister Triangle,"
Marge's influence has gone far beyond her local congregation or the
college. This magazine has subscribers in many provinces of Canada,
several states of United States, and even overseas. Marge's special
achievements as dean of student life include the development of a
counselling program and the development of a definite curriculum in
life skills. In the counselling program, she had counselling
sessions with each student of the college at least two to three
times annually. In the life skills classes, she was teaching what
parents would be teaching, or should be, if the teenagers had been
at home.

Her most challenging activity was to provoke the young people to
grow emotionally, socially, and spiritually. Her greatest joy has
been help ing the students to solve serious problems successfully.
The editor of the college yearbook concludes her 1976 dedication to
Mrs. Roberts in this way, "Her love, patience and strong convic
tions make her an ideal mother and sister in Christ. We love you
Mrs. R."

ALMA SCHILLER
Alma Schiller was born August 2, 1925, at Green Bay, Manitoba. Her
parents were Edward and Christina Schiller. She attended school at
Green Bay and also in the Children's Hospital in Winnipeg. Later,
she studied a commercial course at Western Christian College when
she was employed there as part-time public relations secretary
(1959-60).

While living in Winnipeg, Alma Schiller was secretary of the
"Awareness of the Handicapped Organization" which is an arm of the
Big Sister movement. She was also house mother (1956-59) of a suite
in Winnipeg where handicapped people were taught how to cope and be
independent in the outside world.

After 18 years of devoted service at Western, Alma retired in 1977.
During those years, she was employed as president's secretary
(1960-61), principal's secretary (1961-68), business office
secretary (1969-70), and assistant postmistress and bookstore
manager (1970-77). In addition to these offices, she has given
service in the mailing department of the college.

Although confined to a wheel chair since the age of 12, Alma
Schiller has served her Lord faithfully in a variety of ways. She
has taught Bible classes, invited people to her home for Bible
studies, and encouraged her friends and neighbours to gather in her
home for singing or sewing.

She has loyally supported Western Christian College in numerous
ways. She has served as secretary of its Women's Service Club. For
many years she has contributed knitted goods (possibly 200 pairs of
mitts) to the annual fall fair of W.C.C. Women's Service Club.
While living on campus, she frequently did after-hours typing to
fulfil various needs, and she sometimes conducted research
regarding alumni upon request.

Furthermore, Alma has made her contributions to the Weyburn
community. At Legion Towers where she now lives, she has served as
a vital part of the various committees. She has contributed to the
improvement of facilities for the handicapped in the city of
Weyburn by lobbying city hall on their behalf.

The students of the college honoured Alma Schiller in 1966 by
dedicating the yearbook to her and the alumni of the college chose
her as Alumna of the Year 1986. Her fortitude and cheerful
acceptance of physical handicap and illness are inspiring examples
to all.

HAZEL FEE STRAKER
Hazel Jane Straker, the daughter of Walter and Mary Fee, was born
April 19, 1911, on the family farm near Wishart, Saskatchewan. She
received her grades one through 11 education mainly at the
Perryville country school. On January 25, 1933, she married Norman
Straker of Wishart. They have five children: Walter (December
1933), Bernard (December 1935), Bernice (December 1937), Kathleen

at Western Christian College as laundress (1959-60), as assistant
cook (1960-65, 1966-69), as cafeteria manager (1965-66), and
caretaker-supervisor of the student centre and manager of the
canteen (1969-77).

In addition, she has spent many summer months cleaning and painting

For 30 years, she has been a faithful member of the Women's Service
Club. She has served as a vice-president of the central
organization and as president of its local organization.

Hazel Straker has pursued her quilt making hobby with tireless
interest. By this time, she has made 65 beautiful quilts for her
children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and more than 100
altogether. She still keeps on!

Personal note: Hazel's 18 years of association with the students at
Western Christian College have been a notable blessing in her life.
"I felt that I was of assistance in encouraging these young people
to adopt Christian principles as a way of life and to have a
stronger faith in God," she said.

NORMAN STRAKER
Norman Straker was born August 12, 1900, at Southshields, County
Durham, England. His parents were Joseph and Hannah Straker. He
received his education at Southshields, England, (Standard IV) and
emigrated to Canada in 1910. On January 25, 1933, he married Hazel
Jane Fee at Wishart, Saskatchewan. They have five children: Walter
(December 1933), Bernard (December 1935), Bernice (December 1937),

carpenter, steam-boiler engineer (12 years), skating rink ice maker
(nine years), assistant student centre and canteen supervisor (six
years), and campus gardener for many years until he retired in
1977.

Norman Straker will probably be remembered best at the college for
his beautification of the campus with the planting of lawn grass
and flowers. His green house on campus often has had as many as
4,500 plants.

After his retirement from the college, he was employed by the
provincial government as caretaker for the waterworks at North
Weyburn (1977-82).

Norman Straker served in many facets of community life at Wishart.
He was chairman of the Round Hill School Board (10 years), chief
organizer for Larisa School and chairman of its board (six years),
director of Round Main Telephone Company, charter member of the
Wheat Pool (1924), and a director of the Touchwood Agricultural
Society (10 years) and its president (two years). For many years,
he was secretary of the Perryville Church of Christ and an elder of
the church during the last years the family lived there (five to
six years). At Perryville, he taught Bible classes and was the song
leader.

Norman Straker's interest in community affairs transferred to the
Weyburn community. Here he has been a member of the Stamp Club, the
Weyburn Horticultural Society, and the Senior Citizen's Band.

For 25 years, he has visited and entertained at the Souris Valley

1985, Norman Straker received a Certificate of Recognition from the
city of Weyburn for service to the community "and for a significant
contribution to the quality of life in the City of Weyburn."

All five of the Straker children have attended Western Christian
College and both Walter and Bernard have been chosen Alumnus of the
Year.

Norman Straker served as deacon of the Weyburn church (1969-85).
During his years here, he has entertained church groups, college
students, and alumni groups with his accordion and bones.

ARBUTUS LUELLA TETREAU
Arbutus Luella Tetreau (b 1928) is the daughter of Robert and
Nellie Tetreau. She was born at Meyronne, Saskatchewan, and
educated at a nearby country school and at the town of McCord (one
year). She also attended Success Business College in Regina for
nine months in 1952.

Arbutus was employed by the Saskatchewan Government (October
1952-October 1970) in several departments: Natural Resources,
Mineral Resources, and Labour.

At Western Christian College, she was employed in the business
office (1970-76), in the bookstore and post office (1977-86), in
the post office and as receptionist (1986-88), and in the post

Her community service has been connected to either the church or
the college. In both Regina and Weyburn, she has taught children's
Bible classes. In both congregations, she has assisted with the
Lord's table preparation. In Regina, she has taught during vacation
Bible school and in Weyburn, she has served as secretary of the
local Women's Service Club (two terms).

When considering her years at Western, she recalls enjoying contact
with the Chinese students. She corresponds with a number of them.
She found the bookstore work especially interesting and enjoyed her
independence there. She has been impressed with the annual musicals
that the students presented, and has other pleasant memories of her
contact with the students.

LILLIAN MARIAN TORKELSON
Lillian Marian Torkelson is the daughter of Emil and Hulda
Torkelson. She was born October 24, 1910, at Anamoose, North
Dakota, but came to Canada less than six months later. She received
most of her elementary education at a country school near present
day Ratcliffe, Saskatchewan, and her high school at Radville,
Saskatchewan. In 1929, she graduated from the Regina Normal School.

Following several correspondence courses and summer courses at
Saskatoon, Regina, and Winnipeg, Lillian attended one full year at
United College, Winnipeg. In 1943, she received her B.A. degree in
English and history from the University of Manitoba. Since that
time, she has taken additional university courses at Winnipeg,
Saskatoon, Regina, Vancouver, and Abilene.

Lillian Torkelson was in the teaching field 52 years altogether.
Before teaching at Radville Christian College, she had taught at
three country schools (Glen Curren 1929-30, Model, and Lein) and
four small high schools (Bird's Hill 1934-37, Robsart 1937-39,
Lyndale 1939-42, and Wawota 1943-46). She began teaching at
Radville Christian College when the high school department opened
in 1946, and moved vyith the college to North Weyburn in 1957. She
retired from full-time teaching at Western Christian College in
1974, but continued as a part-time teacher for eight additional
years. The majority of Lillian's volunteer activities have been
connected with education of some kind. In 1931, she helped organize
the first summer vacation Bible school at Minton, Saskatchewan, of
churches of Christ in Canada, and she continued with V.B.S. work
for another seven summers at Radville. She has taught ladies' and
girls' Bible classes at Weyburn. Since 1979, she has been a Bible
correspondence course instructor for students mainly from Nigeria,
Ghana, and Jamaica.

Lillian has been a member of the alumni organization of Western
Christian College since its inception in 1953 and served as its
executive secretary (1963-80), and has been a member of the Women's
Service Club for 30 years.

Within the Weyburn community, she has served in various capacities
in the Weyburn Teachers' Organization. In 1967, she was chairman
for the reunion committee during centennial celebrations and edited
for publication that year, "Trail Blazers of the Chalkboard." For
seven years, she served on the health and welfare committee for
superannuated teachers.

As a member of the University Women's Club of Weyburn, she has
served as secretary and president. She was provincial education
representative for the University Women's Club for a three-year
term.

In one other educational medium, Lillian has been fortunate enough
to serve. She was subscription and mailing manager of the women's
magazine "Sister Triangle" (1981-88).

For visiting the mentally ill at the Saskatchewan Hospital, Lillian
received a Certificate of Appreciation in 1966, and she has
received certificates of appreciation from the Weyburn Home Care
Organization for visiting and for delivering Meals-on-Wheels.
Several other honours received during her lifetime have been
appreciated. She received the governor-general's medal when she
graduated from high school; the college yearbook has been dedicated
to her twice; she was alumna of the year 1974; she was nominated as
Canadian Citizen of the Year (1989) by the University Women's Club;
and has received plaques for long service from the college, but the
honour she has appreciated most of all was her all-expense paid
trip to Europe and the Holy Land (1970) given by her friends and
college alumni. According to Lillian Torkelson, God has entrusted
each person with a special mission on this earth. She considers
herself privileged to have Christian education as her mission.

ELAINE ROBERTS VANCE
Elaine Freda Vance was born in 1939 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her
parents were Frank and Katchen Roberts. She received her elementary
education in the one room country school at Lakeland, Manitoba, and
her high school at the Daniel McIntyre Collegiate in Winnipeg. She
also studied an accounting night course at the Weyburn Community
College for one semester.

In 1963, in Winnipeg, Elaine Roberts married Philip Vance of
Orangeville, Ontario. They have four sons: Kevin (1965), Mark

was employed by the Canadian Indemnity Company, Winnipeg (1957-59)
and the Prudential Assurance Company of England, Winnipeg
(1959-64). For a number of years after her marriage, she was
occupied with raising four sons. Because of her husband's salesman
job, she has lived at six different places: Oberon, Manitoba
(1964-65), Kamloops, B.C. (1965-67), Salmon Arm, B.C. (1967 six
months), Calgary, Alberta (Dec. 1967-74), Red Deer, Alberta (1974-
77), and Weyburn (1977-89).

Elaine accepted the position of dormitory director in Torkelson
Hall in 1979 and held that position for six years. During those
years, she furthered her education by attending workshops and
seminars on child development, relationships, and problem solving
at the Prairie Bible Institute and the Canadian Bible College. In
addition, she studied Jim Pennington's class on communications.

After Torkelson Hall closed in 1985, Elaine worked as a college
custodian for one year. In 1986, she became the bookkeeper and
retains that position at present (1989).

As a volunteer, Elaine has taught Sunday school classes at
Winnipeg, Calgary, and Red Deer, V.B.S. at Weyburn, and worked on
the Joy Bus (1979-82). She has been both cook and teacher at
several camp sessions at, Kenosee Lake. In Red Deer, she assisted
in the organization of the Block Parent Program and in Weyburn, she
served on the Weyburn Home and School Association Executive.

Among the honours she has received, Elaine treasures her athletic
victories in Winnipeg and her service awards in Weyburn. At Daniel
McIntyre Collegiate, she won first in the ball throw, and came
third in the city of Winnipeg. She also played in the softball
championship game in Winnipeg. At Western, she has received both
the five-year and ten-year service pins and certificates.
While working in Torkelson Hall for six years, Elaine enjoyed many
precious times with the girls and suffered the bad times when
dealing with serious discipline problems. One rich blessing has
been the opportunity to watch "the kids" grow and mature and to
visit with them when they return after graduation. However, Elaine
considers that the greatest blessing of her life at the college has
been the many worthwhile lessons her own sons have learned in
classes, and while participating in college activities.

DOROTHY STEBBINGS WIEB
Dorothy Wieb, born in 1927 at Winnipeg, is the only child of Walter
and Ethel Stebbings. She received her elementary and secondary
education in Winnipeg.

Before her marriage, she was employed in Winnipeg by the Credit
Clearing Bureau (one year) and at the City Hall. In 1947, she
married Earl Daniel Wieb of Winnipeg and continued to work at the
City Hall until shortly before the birth of her first child.

Dorothy and Dan Wieb's children are Linda (1949), Karen (1952),
Tommy (1956 deceased 1964), Allen (1956), and Kent (1959).

The Wieb family lived in Abilene, Texas, for three years (1952-55)
while Dan Wieb was attending university, and then in Winnipeg
another six years (1955-61) where Dan preached for the Sherbrook
congregation.

At Western Christian College, Dorothy taught home economics
(1961-67), served as assistant librarian (1968-69, 1974-75), as
assistant dean of Torkelson Hall (1965-69), and dean of College
Hall (1969-73).

In Winnipeg Dorothy had conducted a Friday night craft and Bible
class for the girls of the neighbourhood. The class had an
enrolment of 20 girls. She has taught children's Bible classes at
both Winnipeg and Weyburn, assisted with summer camps at Dauphin,
Horse Creek, and Kenosee, delivered Meals-on-Wheels, and has been
the "Hi Neighbour" lady in Weyburn for the past two years.
She is an active member of the Weyburn Special Care Home Auxiliary.
During her years of membership, she has served both as treasurer
and as president of the organization.

Dan and Dorothy Wieb have conducted a special seminar entitled,
"Hanging In, Hanging On or Just Hanging Around" at Estes Park,
Colorado, and at Kenosee Lake.

When her husband received his honourary Doctor of Laws degree in
1985 from Abilene Christian University, Dorothy Wieb was presented
with a Certificate of Distinction in honour of her faithful support
of her husband and her work in Christian education.

In 1989, Dorothy received a plaque of "Thanks" for transporting a
group of Seniors (The Combo Bowlers) weekly to the bowling alley.

Life at Western Christian College has been both pleasurable and
beneficial to Dorothy Wieb. She enjoyed her contact with the stu
dents. She trusts that some students have been pointed in the right
direction because of her influence. She has made life-long friends
from among both staff and students. And finally, life at the
college has taught her that the pursuit of materialism is a barren
goal and has taught her children the same valuable lesson.

At Western, he has held the positions of vice-principal, dean of

in the province of Saskatchewan.

His work at Western has been all-absorbing. James Willett considers
that he has accomplished more at Western than in all the rest of
his life. There is no other way he would have rather spent the past
22 years.
