THE
SECOND EPISTLE
OF THE
APOSTLE JOHN.

WRITTEN FROM EPHESUS, A. D. 85.

I. THE elder to the Electa Cyria*[App. No. C.] and her children, whom I love sincerly, and not I only, but also all who know the truth.--We love you through the truth which abideth among us, and shall be with us for ever. Favour, mercy, and peace, be with you from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ the Son of the Father, with truth and love.

I rejoiced greatly when I found some of thy children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father. And now I beseech thee, Cyria, not as writing to thee a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. And this is the love, that we walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, even as ye have heard from the beginning, that ye may walk in it. For many deceivers are entered into the world, who do not confess Jesus Christ did come in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. Look to yourselves that we may not lose the things which we have wrought, but may receive a full reward. Whosoever goeth beyond, and doth not abide in the doctrine of Christ, acknowledgeth not God. He who abideth in the doctrine of Christ, the same acknowledgeth both the Father and the Son. If any one come to you, and do not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house, nor wish him happiness. For he who wisheth him happiness, partaketh in his deeds, which are evil. Having many things to write to you, I did not incline to communicate them by paper and ink; because I hope to come to y ou, and speak face to face, that our joy may be made complete. The children of thy sister Electa*[The word Electa is here omitted in many copies.] salute thee. Amen.
