CHAPTER 1.

P UAL called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,
      "Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God (Rom., 1:1)."
      2   "Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
      3   Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
      4   I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;
      5   That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;
      "Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also (II. Cor., 8:7)."
      6   Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:
      7   So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:
      "And while they looked stedfastly toward [252] heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
      Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven (Acts, 1:10, 11)."
      8   Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
      9   God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
      "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me (Jno., 15:4)."
      "That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ (I. Jno., 1:3)."
      10   Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
      "For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:
      So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
      Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits (Rom., 12:4, 5, 16)."
      "Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
      That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
      Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God (Rom., 15:5-7)."
      "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
      For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple (Rom., 16:17, 18)."
      11   For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
      12   Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
      13   Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
      "I and my Father are one (Jno., 10:30)."
      "And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days (Acts, 10:48)."
      14   I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
      "And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized (Acts, 18:8)."
      15   Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
      16   And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
      "I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints) (I. Cor., 16:15)."
      17   For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
      "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
      God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
      Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
      Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
      For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection (Rom., 6:1-5)."
      18   For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
      19   For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
      20   Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
      21   For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
      "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. [253]
      He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned (Mark, 16:15, 16)."
      "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek (Rom., 1:16)."
      "Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
      By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain (I. Cor., 15:1, 2)."

22   For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
      23   But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
      24   But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
      25   Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
      26   For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
      27   But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
      28   And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
      "As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were (Rom., 4:17)."
      29   That no flesh should glory in his presence.
      30   But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
      31   That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
      "Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
      But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord (Jer., 9:23:24)."

 

CHAPTER 2.

A ND I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
      2   For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
      3   And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
      4   And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
      5   That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
      "But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God (I. Cor., 1:24)."
      6   Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
      7   But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
      "Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints (Col., 1:26)."
      8   Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
      "And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers (Acts, 3:17)."
      9   But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
      "For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him (Isa., 64:4)."
      10   But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
      "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. [254]
      He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
      All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you (Jno., 16:13-15)."
      11   For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
      "So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin (Rom., 7:25)."
      "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you (Jno., 14:26)."
      12   Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
      "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
      The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God (Rom., 8:15, 16)."
      13   Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Spirit teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
      "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life (Jno., 6:63)."
      "Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Spirit sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into (I. Pet., 1:12)."
      14   But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
      "But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Heb., 5:14)."
      "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (Gen., 2:7)."
      "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh (Luke, 6:45)."
      "For I delight in the law of God after the inward man (Rom., 7:22)."
      "For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day (II. Cor., 4:16)."
      "For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
      For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
      If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.
      For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life (II. Cor., 5:1-4)."
      "That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
      That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
      May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
      And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God (Eph., 3:16-19)."
      "Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
      And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him (Col., 3:9, 10)."
      "The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
      And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power (Eph., 1:18, 19)."
      "And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments (I. Jno., 2:3)."
      15   But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. "Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the Lord understand all things (Prov., 28:5)."       16   For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
      "Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself (Job, 15:8)?"
      "Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him (Isa., 40:13)?"
      "For who hath stood in the counsel of the Lord, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard it (Jer., 23:18)?"
      "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how [255] unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
      For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?
      Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?
      For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen (Rom., 11:33-36)."

 

CHAPTER 3.

A ND I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
      "But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man (I. Cor., 2:15)."
      2   I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
      "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby (I. Pet., 2:2)."
      3   For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
      "For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
      For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
      Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be (Rom., 8:5-7)."
      4   For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?
      5   Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?
      "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher (Rom., 10:14)?"
      "Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God (I. Cor., 4:1)."
      "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also (II. Tim., 2:2)."
      6   I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
      "After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;
      And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.
      And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.
      And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks (Acts, 18:1-4)."
      "And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.
      Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace:
      For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.
      And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them (Acts, 18:8-11)."
      "And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples (Acts, 19:1)."
      "And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved (Acts, 2:47)."
      "Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God (Rom., 15:7)."
      7   So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
      8   Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.
      9   For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.
      10   According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
      "If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen (I. Pet., 4:11)."
      11   For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
      "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity (II. Tim., 2:19)."
      12   Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; [256]
      13   Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
      14   If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
      15   If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
      "But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:
      And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness (Mal., 3:2, 3)."
      "For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch (Mal., 4:1)."
      "That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ (I. Pet., 1:7)."
      "Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
      But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy (I. Pet., 4:12, 13)."
      16   Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
      17   If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
      18   Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
      19   For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
      20   And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
      "The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity (Ps., 94:11)."
      21   Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours;
      "For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
      For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?
      Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man (I. Cor., 3:3-5)?"
      22   Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours;
      23   And ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's.

 

CHAPTER 4.

L ET a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.
      2   Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
      "And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?
      Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
      Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath (Luke, 12:42-44)."
      3   But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man's judgment: yea, I judge not mine own self.
      4   For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.
      5   Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.
      6   And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.
      "For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?
      Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man (I. Cor., 3:4, 5)."
      7   For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it? [257]
      "John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven (Jno., 3:27)."
      8   Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you.
      9   For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.
      "Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter (Ps., 44:22)."
      10   We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised.
      11   Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;
      12   And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it:
      13   Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.
      14   I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.
      15   For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.
      "And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them (Acts, 18:11)."
      "Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.
      Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man's foundation (Rom., 15:19, 20)."
      "I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase (I. Cor., 3:6)."
      "My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you (Gal., 4:19)."
      "For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake (I. Thess., 1:5)."
      "I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my hands (Phile. 1:10)."
      "Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures (Jas., 1:18)."
      "Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
      By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments (I. Jno., 5:1, 2)."
      16   Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.
      17   For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.
      18   Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you.
      19   But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power.
      20   For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.
      "And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power (I. Cor., 2:4)."
      21   What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love, and in the spirit of meekness?

 

CHAPTER 5.

I T is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
      "The nakedness of thy father's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's nakedness (Lev., 18:8)."
      2   And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
      3   For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
      4   In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
      "And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. [258]
      But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
      And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life (Job, 2:4-6)." "Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand (Ps., 109:6)."
      5   To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
      6   Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
      7   Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
      "He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth (Isa., 53:7)."
      8   Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
      "Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
      Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees (Matt., 16:6, 12)."
      9   I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:
      10   Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.
      11   But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
      "Covetousness, which is idolatry (Col., 3:5)."
      "Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
      If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
      For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds (II. Jno., 1:9-11)."
      12   For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?
      13   But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.
      "Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.
      And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.
      Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother (II. Thess., 3:6, 14, 15)."

 

CHAPTER 6.

D ARE any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?
      2   Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
      "Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom (Dan., 7:22)."
      3   Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?
      4   If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.
      "For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within (I. Cor., 5:12)?"
      5   I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?
      6   But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers.
      7   Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?
      8   Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.
      9   Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
      10   Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor [259] drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
      11   And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
      "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Spirit (Titus, 3:5)."
      "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water (Heb., 10:22)."
      12   All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
      13   Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
      "For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
      That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;
      For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness (I. Thess., 4:3, 4, 7)."
      14   And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
      15   Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
      16   What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
      17   But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
      "And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
      I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me (Jno., 17:22, 23)."
      18   Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
      19   What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
      20   For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
      "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you (I. Cor., 3:16)?"
      "Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
      Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works (Titus, 2:13, 14)."

 

CHAPTER 7.

N OW concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
      2   Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
      3   Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.
      "Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered (I. Pet., 3:7)."
      4   The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
      5   Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.
      "Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge (Heb., 13:4)."
      6   But I speak this by permission, and not of commandment.
      7   For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
      8   I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I.
      9   But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.
      10   And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:
      11   But and if she depart, let her [260] remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.
      12   But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.
      13   And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
      14   For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.
      "And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth (Mal., 2:15)."
      15   But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.
      "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men (Rom., 12:18)."
      16   For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?
      17   But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches.
      18   Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised.
      19   Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.
      20   Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.
      21   Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.
      22   For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant.
      23   Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.
      "For they are my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen (Lev., 25:42)."
      "For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's (I. Cor., 6:20)."
      "For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ (Gal., 1:10)."
      24   Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God.
      "He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing (Jno., 15:5)."
      25   Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
      26   I suppose therefore that this is good for the present distress, I say, that it is good for a man so to be.
      27   Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife.
      28   But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I spare you.
      29   But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none;
      30   And they that weep, as though they wept not; and they that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not; and they that buy, as though they possessed not;
      "And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
      The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light (Rom., 13:11, 12)."
      31   And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away.
      "Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them (Ps., 39:6)."
      32   But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:
      33   But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife. [261]
      34   There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
      35   And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction.
      36   But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.
      37   Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well.
      38   So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better.
      39   The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
      "Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
      For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
      So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man (Rom., 7:1-3)."
      40   But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.

 

CHAPTER 8.

N OW as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
      "That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well (Acts, 15:29)."
      2   And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
      3   But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
      4   As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
      5   For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
      6   But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
      "Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers (Mal., 2:10)?"
      7   Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
      8   But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
      9   But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
      10   For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
      11   And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
      12   But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
      "For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
      For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.
      Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
      For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.
      It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother [262] stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak (Rom., 14:17-21)."
      13   Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.

 

CHAPTER 9.

A M I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?
      "Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds (II. Cor., 12:12)."
      2   If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.
      3   Mine answer to them that do examine me is this,
      4   Have we not power to eat and to drink?
      5   Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?
      6   Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?
      7   Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
      "And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it (Deut., 20:6)."
      "Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured (Prov., 27:18)."
      8   Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
      9   For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
      "Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn (Deut., 25:4)."
      10   Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
      "The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits (II. Tim., 2:6)."
      11   If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
      12   If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
      13   Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
      "It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things (Rom., 15:27)."
      14   Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
      15   But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.
      16   For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!
      "I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise (Rom., 1:14)."
      17   For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.
      18   What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.
      19   For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
      20   And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
      "Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:
      Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium. [263]
      Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek (Acts, 16:1-3)."
      21   To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
      "For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
      Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another (Rom., 2:14, 15)."
      22   To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
      "Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations (Rom., 14:1)."
      23   And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.
      24   Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
      25   And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
      26   I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
      27   But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
      "For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live (Rom., 8:13)."
      "Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the Lord hath rejected them (Jer., 6:30)."

 

CHAPTER 10.

M OREOVER, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
      2   And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
      "And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.
      And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left (Ex., 14:21, 22)."
      3   And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
      "And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan (Ex., 16:35)."
      4   And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
      "And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also (Num., 20:11)."
      "He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.
      He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers (Ps., 78:15, 16)."
      5   But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
      "Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the Lord, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
      Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me (Num., 14:28, 29)."
      "Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word:
      But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord.
      Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness (Ps., 106:24-26)."
      6   Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
      "And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?
      We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick (Num., 11:4, 5)."
      7   Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. [264]
      "And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play (Ex., 32:6)."
      8   Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
      "And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
      And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand (Num., 25:1, 9)."
      9   Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.
      "And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died (Num., 21:6)."
      10   Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
      "Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the Lord (Num., 14:37)."
      11   Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
      "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope (Rom., 15:4)."
      12   Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
      "Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear (Rom., 11:20)."
      13   There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
      "For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity (Ps., 125:3)."
      "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
      Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
      And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart (Jer., 29:11-13)."
      14   Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
      15   I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.
      16   The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
      "And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
      And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it (Matt., 26:26, 27)."
      17   For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.
      18   Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?
      19   What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?
      20   But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
      21   Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
      22   Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
      23   All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
      24   Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.
      25   Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:
      26   For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.
      "The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein (Ps., 24:1)."
      27   If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
      "I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. [265]
      But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died (Rom., 14:14, 15)."
      28   But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:
      29   Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?
      30   For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?
      31   Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
      "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him (Col., 3:17)."
      32   Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:
      33   Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

 

CHAPTER 11.

B E ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
      2   Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
      "But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches (I. Cor., 7:17)."
      3   But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
      "Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee (Gen., 3:16)."
      4   Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
      5   But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
      "The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God (Deut., 22:5)."
      6   For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
      7   For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
      8   For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.
      9   Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
      "And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
      Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh (Gen., 2:23, 24)."
      10   For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
      "Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands (Ecc., 5:6)?"
      11   Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
      12   For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.
      13   Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
      14   Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
      15   But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
      16   But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
      "If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
      He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings (I. Tim., 6:3, 4)." [266]
      17   Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.
      18   For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.
      "Is Christ divided (I. Cor., 1:13?"
      19   For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
      "Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them (Acts, 20:30)."
      20   When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper.
      21   For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.
      22   What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
      23   For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
      24   And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
      25   After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
      "And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.
      And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.
      And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
      Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God (Mark, 14:22-25)."
      26   For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
      "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight (Acts, 20:7)."
      27   Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
      28   But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
      "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates (II. Cor., 13:5)?"
      "But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another (Gal., 6:4)."
      29   For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
      30   For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
      31   For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
      32   But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
      "Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Lord, and teachest him out of thy law;
      That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked (Ps., 94:12, 13)."
      33   Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.
      34   And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.

 

CHAPTER 12.

N OW concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
      "Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy (I. Cor., 14:1)."
      2   Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.
      "Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.
      They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: [267]
      They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not:
      They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.
      They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them (Ps., 115:4-8)."
      3   Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Spirit.
      "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me (Jno., 15:26)."
      4   Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
      "There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling (Eph., 4:4)."
      5   And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
      "Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
      Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching (Rom., 12:6, 7)."
      6   And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
      7   But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
      8   For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
      9   To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
      10   To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
      11   But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
      "Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away (I. Cor., 13:8)."
      12   For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
      13   For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
      "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
      For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
      There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus (Gal., 3:26-28)."
      "And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
      And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing (Acts, 8:38, 39)."
      "One Lord, one faith, one baptism (Eph., 4:5)."
      14   For the body is not one member, but many.
      "Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
      That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (Rom., 15:5, 6)."
      15   If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
      16   And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
      17   If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?
      18   But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.
      "And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved (Acts, 2:47)."
      "Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God (Rom., 15:7)."
      19   And if they were all one member, where were the body?
      20   But now are they many members, yet but one body.
      21   And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.
      22   Nay, much more those members of [268] the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:
      23   And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.
      24   For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:
      25   That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.
      26   And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.
      27   Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
      "And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
      Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all (Eph., 1:22, 23)."
      28   And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
      29   Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
      30   Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
      31   But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

 

CHAPTER 13.

T HOUGH I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
      "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
      For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
      To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
      To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues (I. Cor., 12:7-10)."
      2   And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
      3   And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
      4   Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
      "Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins (Prov., 10:12)."
      "And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins (I. Pet., 4:8)."
      5   Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
      "Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth (I. Cor., 10:24)."
      6   Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
      "For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the Lord abhorreth (Ps., 10:3)."
      "I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father (II. Jno., 1:4)."
      7   Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
      "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ (Gal., 6:2)."
      8   Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
      9   For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
      "And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know (I. Cor., 8:2)."
      10   But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
      11   When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
      12   For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I [269] know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
      "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord (II. Cor., 3:18)."
      "For we walk by faith, not by sight (II. Cor., 5:7)."
      13   And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
      "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him (Heb., 11:6)."
      "Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil (Heb., 6:19)."
      "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God (I. Jno., 4:7)."

 

CHAPTER 14.

F OLLOW after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
      "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
      He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
      All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you (Jno., 16:13-15)."
      "And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
      And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
      Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
      And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilæans?
      And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born (Acts, 2:4-8)?"
      "Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
      Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit:
      (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
      Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit (Acts, 8:14-17)."
      "While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them which heard the word.
      And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.
      For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God (Acts, 10:44-46)."
      "When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
      And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied (Acts, 19:5, 6)."
      "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
      God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his own will (Heb., 2:3, 4)?"
      "Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away (I. Cor., 13:8)."
      2   For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
      3   But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
      4   He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
      5   I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
      6   Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
      7   And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
      8   For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
      9   So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
      10   There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. [270]
      11   Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
      12   Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
      13   Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
      14   For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
      15   What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
      "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord (Eph., 5:19)."
      "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord (Col., 3:16)."
      16   Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
      17   For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
      18   I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
      19   Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
      20   Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
      21   In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
      "For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
      To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
      But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken (Isa., 28:11-13)."
      22   Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
      23   If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
      24   But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
      25   And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
      26   How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
      27   If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
      28   But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
      29   Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
      30   If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
      31   For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
      32   And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
      "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world (I. Jno., 4:1)."
      33   For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
      "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
      And also upon the servants and upon the [271] handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit (Joel, 2:28, 29)."
      "But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
      And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
      And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy (Acts, 2:16-18)."
      34   Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.

      "But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence (I. Tim., 2:12)."
      35   And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
      36   What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
      37   If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
      "Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's (II. Cor., 10:7)."
      38   But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
      39   Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
      40   Let all things be done decently and in order.

 

CHAPTER 15.

M OREOVER, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
      2   By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
      "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek (Rom., 1:16)."
      3   For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
      "But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ (Gal., 1:11, 12)."
      4   And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
      "I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee (Ps., 2:7)."
      "For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption (Ps., 16:10)."
      "Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand (Isa., 53:10)."
      "After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight (Hos., 6:2)."
      "Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
      Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
      And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself (Luke, 24:25-27)."
      "And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,
      God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
      And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David (Acts, 13:32-34)."
      "Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:
      That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles (Acts, 26:22, 23)."

      6   After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.
      7   After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.
      "To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God (Acts, 1:3)."
      8   And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.
      "And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:
      And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
      And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks (Acts, 9:3-5)."
      9   For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
      10   But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
      11   Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.
      "And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe (Acts, 15:7)."
      12   Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
      13   But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:
      14   And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
      15   Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.
      "Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it (Acts, 2:24)."
      16   For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
      17   And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.
      "Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God (Rom., 3:25)."
      18   Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
      19   If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
      20   But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
      21   For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
      22   For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
      23   But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.
      "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (I. Pet., 1:3)."
      24   Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
      "And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever (Dan., 2:44)."
      "For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (II. Pet., 1:11)."
      25   For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
      "The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
      The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies (Ps., 110:1, 2)."
      "Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
      Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: [273]
      And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church (Eph., 1:20-22)."
      26   The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
      "But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel (II. Tim., 1:10)."
      "Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
      And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation (Jno., 5:28, 29)."
      27   For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
      28   And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
      29   Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?
      "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
      Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
      For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection (Rom., 6:3-5)."
      "But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen (I. Cor., 15:13)."
      30   And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?
      31   I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
      "As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter (Rom., 8:36)."
      32   If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to morrow we die.
      "For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:
      But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead (II. Cor., 1:8, 9)."
      "There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour (Ecc., 2:24)."
      33   Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
      34   Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
      35   But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?
      "And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord God, thou knowest.
      Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.
      Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:
      And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the Lord (Ezek., 37:3-6)."
      36   Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:
      "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit (Jno., 12:24)."
      37   And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain:
      38   But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.
      39   All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.
      40   There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.
      41   There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.
      42   "So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: [274]
      "And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
      And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever (Dan., 12:2, 3)."
      "Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear (Matt., 13:43)."
      43   It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:
      "Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself (Phil., 3:21)."
      44   It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
      45   And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
      "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (Gen., 2:7)."
      "Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come (Rom., 5:14)."

      46   Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

      48   As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.

      "And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other (Matt., 24:31)."
      "Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live (Jno., 5:25)."
      "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first (I. Thess., 4:16)."
      53   For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
      "For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life (II. Cor., 5:4)."
      54   So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
      "He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it (Isa., 25:8)."
      55   O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
      "I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes (Hos., 13:14)."
      56   The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
      "Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression (Rom., 4:15)."
      "Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law (I. Jno., 3:4)."
      57   But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
      58   Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding [275] in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

 

CHAPTER 16.

N OW concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
      2   Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
      "In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
      And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
      His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
      And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
      And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
      He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay (Matt., 28:1-6)."
      "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight (Acts, 20:7)."
      3   And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem.

      8   But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost.
      9   For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.
      10   Now if Timotheus come, see that he may be with you without fear: for he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do.
      11   Let no man therefore despise him: but conduct him forth in peace, that he may come unto me: for I look for him with the brethren.
      12   As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren: but his will was not at all to come at this time; but he will come when he shall have convenient time.
      13   Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.
      "Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come (Matt., 24:42)."
      "Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel (Phil., 1:27)."
      14   Let all your things be done with charity.
      "Follow after charity (I. Cor., 14:1)."
      "Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous (I. Pet., 3:8)."
      15   I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)
      16   That ye submit yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth with us, and laboureth.
      17   I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus: for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied.
      18   For they have refreshed my spirit and yours: therefore acknowledge ye them that are such.
      19   The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.
      20   All the brethren greet you. Greet ye one another with an holy kiss.
      21   The salutation of me Paul with mine own hand.
      22   If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.
      23   The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
      24   My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.
