      TIME.--From B. C. 622 to B. C. 408.
      PLACE.--Jerusalem, Babylon, Shushan.
LESSON ANALYSIS.--1. A City Destroyed for its Sins; 2. A Captive People; 3. A Joyful Return.

INTRODUCTION.

Bunyan represents Christian and Hopeful at one time "much discouraged because of the way," because the king's highway in which they were walking was rough; and, coming to a stile that led into some delightful fields called By-path Meadow, they left the true road, and at length were caught by Giant Despair, and shut up in Doubting Castle. After they had escaped, and were safely again in the king's highway, "they began to contrive with themselves what they should do at that stile to prevent those that shall come after from falling into the hands of Giant Despair. So they consented to erect there a pillar, and to engrave upon the side thereof this sentence: Over this stile is the way to Doubting Castle, which is kept by Giant Despair, who despiseth the King of the Celestial country, and seeks to destroy his holy pilgrims. Many, therefore, that followed after, read what was written, and escaped the danger." This Quarter's lessons are like such a pillar, showing us which are the dangerous paths, and where is the King's highway to holiness and heaven. The subject that we therefore designate, as the practical application of the twelve lessons, just passed over, is

THE CAPTIVITY OF THE SOUL.

      1. Led captive by Sin, the great enemy.
      2. Exiled from the Father's house and the spiritual Jerusalem.
      3. Permitted to return by a penitent obedience.

We would suggest in the treatment of the Review, that the superintendent assign the following subjects for three-minute essays to some of the brightest pupils: 1. The Fall of Jerusalem. 2. The People in Exile. 3. Daniel. 4. Esther. 5. The Return to Jerusalem. After the reading of these essays the remaining time may be spent in a general review. [82]
