J O H N   T H E   B E L O V E D.
A SONNET, BY JAMES CHALLEN.
"He surnamed them Boanerges--the sons of thunder."

Jesus the Christ, whose searching eyes
    See all that dwells within the breast;
Who knows the latent power that lies
    Within the human heart, at rest.
The strength of will, that love can wield,
    The mastery of its tearful eye;
Its conquests in each battle-field,
    Its ardors kindled in the sky;
Its power to shake the heavens and earth,
    Its matchless energy and fame,
Its heavenly origin and birth,
    The grandeur of its living flame;--
And thinking thus, I cease to wonder,
    That John is called--"A Son of Thunder."
