ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC EDITION
The indexes (or, more properly, the tables of contents) for the first four volumes of Lard's Quarterly (1864-1867) have been transcribed from bound volumes of the periodical. The indexes have been set in tabular form. Presumably, these indexes had been compiled by Lard himself. The magazine ceased publication with Volume V, Number 2 (April 1868); the editor's index is not available for that incomplete volume.
These indexes in the bound volumes of Lard's Quarterly have a special importance in enabling the reader to identify authors of articles published there. In the individual issues, the articles are usually signed with a pseudonym or an initial, the author's name later being specified only in the index to the volume. Identification of authors is further complicated by the use of multiple pseudonyms by an author--for example, J. W. McGarvey signed articles as Kappa, Allan, and M., and in one instance his article is unsigned; Lard himself signed only one article (his "Preface" in the first number) with his full name and four notes with his initials (M.E.L.).
Addenda and corrigenda are earnestly solicited.
