SCRIPTURE REFERENCES
from American Standard Version (1901)

Numbers 22:1-20

      1.   And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.
      2   And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
      3   And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.
      4   And Moab said unto the elders of Midian, Now will this multitude lick up all that is round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.
      5   And he sent messengers unto Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me.
      6   Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom thou blessest is blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.
      7   And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak.
      8   And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as Jehovah shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.
      9   And God came unto Balaam, and said, What men are these with thee?
      10   And Balaam said unto God, Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me, saying,
      11   Behold, the people that is come out of Egypt, it covereth the face of the earth: now, come curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out.
      12   And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people; for they are blessed.
      13   And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, Get you into your land; for Jehovah refuseth to give me leave to go with you.
      14   And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, Balaam refuseth to come with us.
      15.   And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they.
      16   And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:
      17   for I will promote thee unto very great honor, and whatsoever thou sayest unto me I will do: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.
      18   And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Jehovah my God, to do less or more.
      19   Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what Jehovah will speak unto me more.
      20   And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men are come to call thee, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak unto thee, that shalt thou do.

Deuteronomy 24:1-3

      1.   When a man taketh a wife, and marrieth her, then it shall be, if she find no favor in his eyes, because he hath found some unseemly thing in her, that he shall write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.
      2   And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.
      3   And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, who took her to be his wife;

1 Samuel 8:1-22

      1.   And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
      2   Now the name of his first-born was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah: they were judges in Beer-sheba.
      3   And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice.
      4.   Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah;
      5   and they said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
      6   But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto Jehovah.
      7   And Jehovah said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee; for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them.
      8   According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
      9   Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit thou shalt protest solemnly unto them, and shalt show them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
      10   And Samuel told all the words of Jehovah unto the people that asked of him a king.
      11   And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them unto him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots;
      12   and he will appoint them unto him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and he will set some to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots.
      13   And he will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
      14   And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
      15   And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
      16   And he will take your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.
      17   He will take the tenth of your flocks: and ye shall be his servants.
      18   And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye shall have chosen you; and Jehovah will not answer you in that day.
      19   But the people refused to hearken unto the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay: but we will have a king over us,
      20   that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
      21   And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Jehovah.
      22   And Jehovah said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

Psalms 81:12

      12   So I let them go after the stubbornness of their heart, That they might walk in their own counsels.

Ezekiel 20:25

      25   Moreover also I gave them statutes that were not good, and ordinances wherein they should not live;

Malachi 2:14, 16

      14   Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because Jehovah hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously, though she is thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.
      16   For I hate putting away, saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, and him that covereth his garment with violence, saith Jehovah of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.

Matthew 6:24

      24   No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Matthew 19:8

      8   He saith unto them, Moses for your hardness of heart suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it hath not been so.

      9   And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and he that marrieth her when she is put away committeth adultery.

      20   The young man saith unto him, All these things have I observed: what lack I yet?

Mark 1:1-16

      1.   The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
      2   Even as it is written in Isaiah the prophet, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way.
      3   The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight;
      4   John came, who baptized in the wilderness and preached the baptism of repentance unto remission of sins.
      5   And there went out unto him all the country of Judaea, and all they of Jerusalem; And they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
      6   And John was clothed with camel's hair, and had a leathern girdle about his loins, and did eat locusts and wild honey.
      7   And he preached, saying, There cometh after me he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.
      8   I baptized you in water; But he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
      9.   And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in the Jordan.
      10   And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens rent asunder, and the Spirit as a dove descending upon him:
      11   And a voice came out of the heavens, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased.
      12   And straightway the Spirit driveth him forth into the wilderness.
      13   And he was in the wilderness forty days tempted of Satan; And he was with the wild beasts; And the angels ministered unto him.
      14.   Now after John was delivered up, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,
      15   and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe in the gospel.
      16   And passing along by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishers.

Mark 10:2-12

      2   And there came unto him Pharisees, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? trying him.
      3   And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?
      4   And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.
      5   But Jesus said unto them, For your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.
      6   But from the beginning of the creation, Male and female made he them.
      7   For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife;
      8   and the two shall become one flesh: so that they are no more two, but one flesh.
      9   What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
      10   And in the house the disciples asked him again of this matter.
      11   And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her:
      12   and if she herself shall put away her husband, and marry another, she committeth adultery.

Mark 10:20, 22

      20   And he said unto him, Teacher, all these things have I observed from my youth.
      22   But his countenance fell at the saying, and he went away sorrowful: for he was one that had great possessions.

Luke 14:33

      33   So therefore whosoever he be of you that renounceth not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

Luke 18:18

      18.   And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

Luke 18:23

      23   But when he heard these things, he became exceeding sorrowful; for he was very rich.

John 6:67, 68

      67   Jesus said therefore unto the twelve, Would ye also go away?
      68   Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

John 8:29-46

      29   And he that sent me is with me; he hath not left me alone; for I do always the things that are pleasing to him.
      30   As he spake these things, many believed on him.
      31.   Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, then are ye truly my disciples;
      32   and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
      33   They answered unto him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
      34   Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin.
      35   And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever.
      36   If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
      37   I know that ye are Abraham's seed: yet ye seek to kill me, because my word hath not free course in you.
      38.   I speak the things which I have seen with my Father: and ye also do the things which ye heard from your father.
      39   They answered and said unto him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
      40   But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I heard from God: this did not Abraham.
      41   Ye do the works of your father. They said unto him, We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
      42   Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I came forth and am come from God; for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me.
      43   Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word.
      44   Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.
      45   But because I say the truth, ye believe me not.
      46.   Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth, why do ye not believe me?

John 14:6

      6   Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me.

1 Corinthians 1:26-31

      26   For behold your calling, brethren, that not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
      27   but God chose the foolish things of the world, that he might put to shame them that are wise; and God chose the weak things of the world, that he might put to shame the things that are strong;
      28   and the base things of the world, and the things that are despised, did God choose, yea and the things that are not, that he might bring to nought the things that are:
      29   that no flesh should glory before God.
      30   But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who was made unto us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption:
      31   that, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 7:10, 11

      10.   But unto the married I give charge, yea not I, but the Lord, That the wife depart not from her husband
      11   (but should she depart, let her remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband); and that the husband leave not his wife.

2 Corinthians 3:7

      1.   And you did he make alive, when ye were dead through your trepasses and sins,
      2   wherein ye once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the powers of the air, of the spirit that now worketh in the sons of disobedience;
      3   among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest:--
      4.   but God, being rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
      5   even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace have ye been saved),
      6   and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus:
      7   that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus:
      8   for by grace have ye been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
      9   not of works, that no man should glory.
      10   For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God afore prepared that we should walk in them.

      17   Charge them that are rich in this present world, that they be not highminded, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
      18   that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
      19   laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on the life which is life indeed.

Hebrews 13:4

      4   Let marriage be had in honor among all, and let the bed [be] undefiled: for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

Hebrews 4:15

      15   For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but one that hath been in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

James 2:5

      5   Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him?

1 Peter 2:22

      22   Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
