ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I am indebted to some unknown persons for recovering certain facts about our churches. These mined a nugget of fact for all time by writing a news note for their paper. The most numerous class, to be named last, went to official records, and added their personal knowledge of the local church life, and kindly checked it in my MS.

Some kind counselling was done by. Dr. A. T. DeGroot, dean of Chapman College, himself a Disciple historian of note.

My scholarly young friend, Mr. Donald E. Pratt, of Winnipeg, was kind enough to read the MS and to offer constructive guidance. It fell to him also to see the work through the press. To him I would express most grateful thanks.

The Reminiscences of Mr. Joseph Ash, published in 1882-3, as to Ontario, are our longest source and have been frequently mentioned throughout.

Mr. W. H. Harding, Maritime preacher for the years 1889-1939, wrote more current history than any other preacher. In co-operation in 1939, shortly before his death, he furnished me with an authentic thumbnail sketch of the Maritimes. This appears from his MS as chapter eight. He made a life contribution to the cause in the Maritimes.

From "The Island" I had the benefit of some research by Miss Grace B. Beattie, of Summerside. The clear memory of the late Mr. J. Harry Williams, of Charlottetown, went back to Dr. John Knox.

Mr. E. M. MacDougall, of West Gore, N.S. aided me greatly by his local records and lore of the early churches of Christ in Hants County. The story of the Maritimes, for all of us, was under-girded by the gift of early and late files of The Christian, by their overseeing publisher, Mr. James W. Barnes, of St. John, N.B.

Miss Mary Oliphant, of Detroit, was a surviving aid to an understanding of the magnificent publishing contribution of her father, the late Mr. David Oliphant.

The late Mr. George Munro (aided by Mrs. Annie Munro) helped to make ten years of splendid Disciple history in Ontario, and aided by its publication in his journals.

Mr. Duncan Robertson, of Eramosa, and his family "lead all the rest" as collectors of religious memorabilia and have made posterity indebted to them. And the late Mr. Norris Black, of Eramosa and Toronto, [VIII] saved the current Disciple magazines and bound them adequately--as 'collectors' pieces.

Mrs. M. V. Romig, in her active organizing work, aided in preserving some of the Western scene, particularly in Winnipeg.

I hope the readers will enjoy the reverent sentiment of the poem, "The Little Country Churches", which its author, Miss Mary Sparks Dyer, of Galt, has permitted me to use, from Toronto Daily Star.

To avoid tediousness, I trust, I may hold only in kind memory certain others who will not object if I am reticent about their gifts.
