23.  JOURNALS

The following listing of journals is not comprehensive, but should be
helpful in catching a glimpse of the journals published by  members of
the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Where journals are
followed by volume number information, that information  indicates
which volumes are available in the Mary Couts Burnett library of Texas
Christian University.  The journals and periodicals  are found on two
floors in the library.  The first floor contains the A-L series
(alphabetically arranged by title), and the basement level  contains the
M-Z series.  

AMERICAN CHRISTIAN REVIEW:  1856-60, 1862-63, 1867-73,
1875-87, on microfilm.  It was founded as a monthly paper  in 1856
and became a weekly paper in 1858.  It stood with the Gospel
Advocate in supporting a strict and legalistic Christian  primitivism.  In
1887 the paper_s name changed to Octographic Review.

BRITISH MILLENNIAL HARBINGER & FAMILY MAGAZINE: 
Vol. 1-15, 17-18; 1848-62, 1864-65, 1866-67, 1869.   In 1835 William
Jones of London began to publish a BMH to disseminate the views of
Alexander Campbell.

BUSINESS IN CHRISTIANITY:  Not in library.  It was begun in the
fall of 1893 in order to supply information about funding  the Church
Extension program and to help mission congregations.  It was one of
five journals which merged in 1918 to form  World Call.

CANADIAN DISCIPLE:  Vol. 19-present, 1954-present.  The
Canadian branch of Disciples published their own journals.  In  1839
the Christian was published.  In 1892 the Christian Messenger was
started in Toronto and in 1923 it merged with the  Christian to form
the Canadian Disciple.

THE CHRISTIAN:  Vol. 11-13, 15-18; April 1873-75, 1877-81 on
microfilm; Vol 98-111, 1960-73.  See details under Christian 
Evangelist.  It continued as the Gospel Echo and Christian.  It merged
to form Christian Evangelist; resumed the title The  Christian; then
merged with World Call to form Disciple in 1974.

CHRISTIAN AGE:  Not in library.  T.J. Mellish began publication of
it in 1845 and it came to absorb Walter Scott_s Protestant  Unionist.

THE CHRISTIAN BAPTIST:  Vol. 1-7, 1823-30.  Edited and
published by Alexander Campbell from 1823-30.  After Volume 7  was
published in July 1830, Campbell decided to discontinue publication
under the title Christian Baptist.  The following  January he began
publishing the Millennial Harbinger in its place.

CHRISTIAN CENTURY:  Vol. 17-36, 1900-19, on microcard; Vol.
34-38, 1917-21 incomplete; Vol. 40-present.  It became the  Christian
Century in 1900 when its original title Christian Oracle was changed. 
The Christian Oracle appealed to a circle of  liberal-minded Disciples
and it struggled to stay afloat.  The Christian Century was offered for
sale in 1908 and was purchased  by Charles Clayton Morrison for
$1500.  Under his leadership the Christian Century became"an
undenominational journal of  religion" in 1918.

CHRISTIAN EVANGELIST:  Vol 20-44, 1882-1907 on microfilm;
Vol. 28-31, 36, 45-96, 1891-94, 1899, 1908-58.  The  oldest
continuously published journal among Disciples.  It was founded as the
Gospel Echo in January 1863.  When The  Christian failed to stand on
its own it merged with The Gospel Echo.  The new name became The
Gospel Echo and Christian  and it first appeared in March 1872 as a
weekly journal.  In 1874 the journal was once again called The
Christian.  On  October 5, 1882 The Christian merged with The
Evangelist forming The Christian-Evangelist.  The journal would
resume  this title until 1958 when it became known as The Christian
Evangelist-Front Rank which lasted for one year.  By 1960 it  was once
again known as The Christian and in 1974 The Christian merged with
World Call to form a semi-monthly journal:   The Disciple (actual date
of merger, January 1, 1974).

CHRISTIAN EVANGELIST-FRONT RANK:  Vol. 97, January 4 -
December 27, 1959.  During 1959, The Christian  Evangelist was
published under the name of Christian Evangelist-Front Rank.  From
1960-73, the journal became known as  The Christian.  On January 1,
1974, The Christian merged with World Call to form The Disciple.

CHRISTIAN GLEANER:  Not in library.  The oldest journal published
by the Canadian Disciples; it began in 1832.

CHRISTIAN LUMINARY:  Not in library.  It superseded the
North-Western Christian Magazine in 1858.  After the first issue of 
Christian Luminary was circulated by John Boggs, its publisher, an
anti-slavery convention was sponsored by a few Disciples  in
Cleveland.

THE CHRISTIAN MESSENGER:  Vol. 1-14 on microfilm.  Founded
by Barton W. Stone in November 1826; it ceased in  1837.  It was
revived in 1839 lasting until 1845.

CHRISTIAN MONITOR:  Vol. 14, 16, 19-20, 22, 1875, 1877,
1880-81, 1883; also, Vol. 1-4 as Ladies Christian Monitor.  It  came
about as Marcia M. Bassett combined two of her earlier founded
journals Ladies Christian Monitor and Mother_s  Monitor into the
Christian Monitor (Mother_s Monitor is not in the library).

CHRISTIAN ORACLE:  Vol 1-15, 1884-98, on microfilm.  Founded
in 1884, it was renamed the Christian Century in 1900.   Christian
Oracle appealed to a circle of liberal-minded Disciples but had a tough
time obtaining a national constituency.

CHRISTIAN PHILANTHROPIST:  Vol. 21, 1914.  A publication of
the National Benevolent Association, it was originally  called The
Orphan_s Cry (1894).  In 1903 after the NBA had entered the field of
caring for the aged, the name of the paper was  changed to Christian
Philanthropist.  It is one of five journals which merged to form World
Call in 1918.

CHRISTIAN PLEA:  Volumes from April 1928-August 1957. 
Originally the Gospel Plea (founded in 1896), the name changed to 
Christian Plea in 1926.  It was published until 1965.

CHRISTIAN QUARTERLY:  Vol. 1-8, 1869-1876.  Published by
William T. Moore, this Disciples periodical received favorable  notice
in Europe but appealed to only a small minority of Disciples.

CHRISTIAN RECORD:  Not in library.  Published by Elijah Goodwin
in Indianapolis.  He favored the cause of the Union during  the Civil
War and took issue with the neutral position of Benjamin Franklin_s
American Christian Review.

THE CHRISTIAN STANDARD:  Vol. 1-101, 1866-1966 on
microfilm; Vol. 31-present, 1895-present.  The first issue came  forth
April 7, 1866.

THE COLLEGE OF THE BIBLE QUARTERLY.  Renamed Lexington
Theological Quarterly (Lexington, Kentucky) 1910- ;   suspended
1926-1937.

DISCIPLE:  Vol. 1-present, 1974-present.  Formed by the merger of
Christian and World Call. 

DISCIPLIANA:  Vol. 1-12; Vol. 20-present; Vol. 13-19 as Harbinger
and Discipliana.  This is the quarterly historical journal of  the
Disciples of Christ Historical Society.  Volume 53 (1993) began an
expanded format.

ECUMENICAL STUDIES SERIES:  Vol. 1-5, 1955-60.  Published by
the Council on Christian Unity.  Continued in 1961 as  Mid-Stream.

ENCOUNTER:  Indianapolis, Vol. 17-present, 1956-present; continues
the Shane Quarterly.

EVANGELIST:  Vol. 1-17, 1865-1882 on microfilm.  Started by
Daniel Bates, it was originally known as Western Evangelist in  1850. 
To accelerate the growth of the Christian.  James Garrison negotiated a
merger with the Evangelist in 1882.  For  further details see Christian
Evangelist.

THE EVANGELIST:  Ed. Walter Scott, Vol. 1-10, 1832-43 on
microfilm; Vol. 1 can be found in a bound volume.  Began  publication
in 1832 and continued until 1844.  This journal is not the one which
merged to form Christian Evangelist.

GOSPEL ADVOCATE:  Vol. 5-6, 9-11, 13-14, 25-26, 81-83, 84-85,
96, 98, 101, 104-present, 1859-60, 1867-69, 1871-72,  1883, 1939-41,
1943-present.  It stood with the American Christian Review in
supporting a strict and legalistic Christian  primitivism.

GOSPEL ECHO:  Vol. 4-9, 1866-71 on microfilm.  It is at the very
root of the oldest continuously published journal among  Disciples.  It
merged with The Christian to form The Gospel Echo and Christian in
March 1872.  See The Christian  Evangelist for further details.

GOSPEL ECHO AND CHRISTIAN:  Not in library.  James Garrison
merged the Christian with the Gospel Echo.  The first  issue came off
the press in 1872.  See Christian Evangelist for further details.

GOSPEL PLEA:  Founded in 1896.  Incomplete, 1905, 1911, 1918-26,
located in Special Collections.  A weekly journal  containing editorials,
news, announcements, and occasional feature articles; it was the paper
existing for the longest time  among Negro Disciples.  In 1926 the
name changed to The Christian Plea which continued to be published
until 1965.  The  library contains publications up to 1957.

LADIES CHRISTIAN MONITOR:  Not in library.  Marcia M.
Bassett, the only woman in the editorial circle of the Disciples, 
published and edited this periodical.  She married Elijah Goodwin, also
a publisher, in 1864 and continued publishing.  She  also started
Mother_s Monitor and in 1866 she merged the two to form Christian
Monitor.  She also edited Missionary  Tidings.  She was strongly
committed to the missionary enterprise.

LARD_S QUARTERLY:  Vol. 1-5, 1863-68.  Established by Moses
Lard in 1863 as a conservative publication.  It was  discontinued in
1868.

LITTLE SOWER:  Not in library.  In the mid-1860's it was published
by William W. Dowling; it was one of the first Sunday  School
magazines in the Disciples.

MID-STREAM:  Vol. 1-present, 1961-present.  This is the official
journal of the Council on Church Unity.  Continues  Ecumenical
Studies Series, 1955-60.

THE MILLENNIAL HARBINGER:  Vol. 1-41, 1830-70.  It came into
existence in January 1830 when Alexander Campbell  replaced the
Christian Baptist with the Millennial Harbinger.  It was discontinued in
1870.

THE MISSIONARY INTELLIGENCER:  Vol. 5-19, 1892-1906, some
of these are incomplete; Vol. 20-31, 1907-18.  It  merged along with
four other journals to form World Call in 1918.

MISSIONARY TIDINGS:  Vol. 1-36, 1883-1918.  Along with four
other journals Missionary Tidings merged in 1918 to form  World Call.

MOTHER_S MONITOR:  Not in library.  Marcia M. Bassett created
this paper which she would combine with another creation of  her_s,
Ladies Christian Monitor, to form Christian Monitor in 1866.

NORTHWESTERN CHRISTIAN MAGAZINE:  Vol. 1-4, July
1854-57 on microfilm.  Edited and published by John Boggs,  it was
the only abolitionist journal among the Disciples.  It was founded in
1854 and was superseded by Christian Luminary.

OCTOGRAPHIC REVIEW:  Published 1887-1939.  1888-1905, on
microfilm, inquire at Serials Department.  It continued the  American
Christian Review.  The American Christian Review continued its
decline after Ben Franklin_s death under the new  editor John F. Rowe. 
Daniel Sommer succeeded Rowe in 1887 and changed the paper_s name
to Octographic Review.  What  had been the first important weekly
Disciples publication was now moved to the outskirts of prominence.

OLD PATH GUIDE:  Vol. 1-3, 1879-81.  It was merged with
Apostolic Times to create the Apostolic Guide in 1885.

ORPHAN_S CRY:  Not in library.  The first issue appeared in May
1894 and in 1903 its name was changed to Christian  Philanthropist
which would be one of five journals to merge and form World Call. 
Orphan_s Cry was instituted under the  NBA.

PROTESTANT UNIONIST:  Not in library.  Originally a Walter Scott
publication, this magazine was absorbed by Christian  Age.

RESTORATION HERALD:  Vol. 8-16, 1929-38, some are incomplete. 
Bound volumes include Vol. 13-59, 1934-85.  The  official organ of
the Christian Restoration Association, a conservative group interested in
rectifying abuses by the liberal  wing of the Church.

THE SCROLL:  Vol. 1-59, 1903-62 on microfilm; bound volumes
include Vol. 4, 5, 1906-07, Vol. 20-22, 1923-26, Vol. 30-62, 
1934-78.  Published originally as The Bulletin of the Campbell
Institute; it was renamed The Scroll in 1906.

SHANE QUARTERLY:  Vol. 1-16, 1940-55.  It was continued as
Encounter.

WESTERN EVANGELIST:  It was started in 1850 by Daniel Bates.  It
was the original journal which would become The  Evangelist, the
periodical which would merge with Christian to form Christian
Evangelist.  For further details see Christian  Evangelist.

WORLD CALL:  Vol. 1-55, 1919-73.  It was the result of a merger of
five journals in 1918:  The American Home Missionary,  Missionary
Tidings, Missionary Intelligencer, Business in Christianity, and The
Christian Philanthropist.  The first issue  came forth January 1919.  In
1973 it merged with Christian to form Disciple.
