WRITINGS OF ALEXANDER CAMPBELL
Quoted in Memoirs of Alexander Campbell.

The following list attempts to catalogue extended quotations from the works of Alexander Campbell as published in Robert Richardson's Memoirs of Alexander Campbell (Philadelphia, PA: J. B. Lippincott and Company, 1868, 1869). With one or two exceptions, the entries are limited to those that constitute first publication or first book appearance. The date of composition for previously unpublished items or the date of publication for magazine articles has been enclosed in parentheses immediately following the title. The page numbers for the entire magazine article are enclosed in brackets at the end of the entry.

Locating the sources of first publication items was greatly aided by the invaluable indexes of Gary L. Lee (Index to the Christian Baptist. Joplin, MO: College Press Publishing Company, 1983) and David I. McWhirter (An Index to the Millennial Harbinger. Joplin, MO: College Press Publishing Company, 1981).

The idea for cataloguing documentary sources occurred rather late in the production of the online version of the first volume of Memoirs of Alexander Campbell. The compiler plans to return to this project in order to identify and catalogue all quotations from the works of Thomas and Alexander Campbell. Because Richardson's biography (or, as one correspondent styles it, hagiography) is considered a primary source for information about the Campbells, such a list of sources will enable the modern scholar to assess accuracy, to separate fact and fancy, in the Memoirs.
