Robert Richardson The Principles and Objects of the Religious Reformation (1853) |
The electronic edition of Robert Richardson's Principles and Objects of the Religious Reformation, Urged by A. Campbell and Others, Briefly Stated and Explained, 2nd ed. (Bethany, VA: A. Campbell, 1853) has been produced from a copy of the printed text held by the Disciples of Christ Historical Society. The electronic edition has been produced from text scanned by Colvil Smith and formatted by Ernie Stefanik.
Of the publication history of the treatise, Richardson notes: "A portion of it was published in three last numbers of last year's Harbinger, and, subsequently, in pamphlet form, and the whole, having been thoroughly revised, and considerably enlarged, and improved, is now stereotyped in a neat and convenient form . . ." (M.H., 1853, p. 297). The chapters were first published in The Millennial Harbinger as a series of essays under the general title, "Principles and Purposes of the Reformation: A Brief Account of the Principles and Purposes of the Religious Reformation Urged by A. Campbell and Others." The chapters of the first serial publication, issued in four parts during October-December 1852, are as follows:

No copy of the first edition has been located for examination. The National Union Catalog Pre-1956 Imprints (London: Mansell, 1977) lists this 36-page pamphlet as being issued at Bethany, VA, by A. Campbell, in 1852. Claude E. Spencer, in his An Author Catalog of Disciples of Christ and Related Religious Groups (Canton, MO: Disciples of Christ Historical Society, 1946), lists only the second edition (Bethany, VA: A. Campbell, 1853) and third edition (Cincinnati: Chase and Hall, 1977; St. Louis, MO: Christian Publishing Company, n.d.).
Pagination in the electronic version has been represented by placing the page number in brackets following the last complete word on the printed page. In the printed text, footnotes are indicated by printer's devices (asterisks, daggers, etc.); in the electronic text, they are treated as sequentially numbered endnotes. Inconsistencies in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and typography have been retained; however, corrections have been offered for misspellings and other accidental corruptions. Emendations are as follows:
