John Anderson Spencer is a native of Henry County, Virginia. His parents were Pinkney and Mary J. Spencer. He made his appearance into this world in the year 1855. He received his education in the public schools; Snowville Preparatory, taught by John Hopwood; Bethany College and the College of the Bible.

He was baptized by T. J. Stone when he was eighteen years old. His first work in the ministry was in Alleghany [sic! Allegheny] District, Virginia, where he labored as evangelist and his success was marvelous. He went from this field to Strasburg, Virginia. He served this and other churches, which were grouped into one field. He went from this field to Bristol Tennessee; then to Harriman, Tennessee; then to Manchester, Virginia; then to Danville; then to Martinsville, Virginia; and then to Bloomfield, Indiana.

In all of these fields he has been successful, but in none of them has he done a greater work than he is doing now at Bloomfield. He is now building a beautiful house of worship. His gentle disposition, sympathy and deep interest in everybody, cause him to be greatly loved.
