A Letter
Mr. R. M. Bell
President of Johnson Bible College
Kimberlin Heights, Tennessee
Dear Brother Bell:
I have just finished a second careful reading of your booklet bearing the
title: "What the Bible Teaches Concerning Instrumental Music in Worship." I have sought to
study the thesis you present as objectively as possible, and I am convinced that your conclusion
with reference to the church of our Lord in the use of instrumental music is not justified.
In view of your present official position, and assuming that like myself,
you want the truth upon all matters which affect the fate and welfare of spiritual Israel, and
knowing that it is but fair to hear the various sides of such issues, I am presuming upon your
good will in asking permission to appear before the student body of the college of which you are
the head, for the purpose of reviewing the arguments presented in your booklet,
and pointing out what appear to me to be fallacies in their application.
Would you consent to allowing me to speak for one hour upon this topic,
if I will agree to submit to questions from the faculty and student body for a like period at the
close of my remarks? If you will allow this in the interest of truth, I pledge myself to maintain
Christian conduct and demeanor regardless of circumstances, and to treat you and your thesis in
a manner devoid of any false implications or aspersions.
My sole purpose in requesting such permission is to further the cause of
restoration and seek that truth which makes men free. I realize fully that you may not feel at all
justified in granting this request and assure you that whatever your decision, it will in no wise
affect my personal regard for you. With a sincere prayer that we may be used as humble
instruments of the King to effect that unity of believers for which He prayed, I am Yours and
HIS, W. Carl Ketcherside.
