Sunday Entertainment

[Page 8]
In this era and nation of ours we are constantly reminded of the many forms of entertainment and recreation placed before man. Sunday is not different, people want entertainment that day also. Yet in this particular article I am not concerned as to what you may or may not do after either of the services.

I am interested in our worship services. Many people seem to regard a church service in the light of entertainment. We are interested in the show of the service and not the spirituality. We are more concerned with the mechanical side of our song service than we are with the teaching and admonishing of one another. Our minds are more filled with picking flaws in a brother's dress, his delivery and mannerisms than in the message he presents. We want entertainment rather than worship. We act as critics at a theatrical opening rather than worshippers together.

As we assemble on the first day of the week to commemorate the death of our Lord Jesus Christ, are we more concerned with what our religious neighbors may say about us than we are about the acceptableness of our worship? Worship is not a thing to which we listen or observe. It is an act within itself. We do not attend services to listen but to worship. We are not there as spectators, but worshippers. We make it spiritual, because we are spiritual, not because it is a polished program.

Some seem to have the notion that the church is a social organization, like unto a Rotary club, a Masonic lodge, a PTA, or a country club. A place to meet friends particularly those with whom we have things in common. Thus with this attitude, we are concerned with what we shall enjoy and receive, rather than what we can sacrifice and give. Possibly your financial contribution would be larger if the entertainment was better.

Let us approach the services with this attitude: "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created." "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory and blessing." -F. W. Landes.
