More than three hundred people attended the
Cumberland Christian Camp Meeting held near Corbin, Kentucky,
August 15-17, where Luther Burrus and the editor were the night
speakers.... Jim Mabery has moved from the Saint Louis area to
Chillicothe, Missouri, where he will be laboring with the
brethren in an intensive effort to promote kingdom growth.... A
notable meeting was held at Bloomington, Illinois, August 24,
when two non-instrument congregations joined with one where the
instrument is used, in giving a public demonstration of the unity
of the Spirit which they hold in common in spite of differences.
The brethren are going to pursue the problem of working together
on projects which will transcend their divergent views. It was
our privilege to address this first joint meeting.... A new paper
called First Century Christian, has been launched at
Memphis, Tennessee, with Roy J. Hearn and Franklin Camp as
editors. The first issue contained articles by Foy E. Wallace,
Jr., Glenn L. Wallace, and Alan E. Highers.... We regret to
chronicle the death of James A. Allen, Nashville, Tennessee,
August 4. Bro. Allen was editor of Gospel Advocate for
seven years, and later of Apostolic Times. In the latter
journal he attacked the clergy system which was building up in
the congregations and exercising officious control, but the
pressures became too great and caused him to withdraw and remain
silent. In our personal conversations he gave evidence of great
concern, but he was handcuffed by location and circumstance....
Jim Smith, who labored with brethren at Bonne Terre, Missouri, is
now working with Syntex Labs, Inc., at 962 Shephard Drive, Corpus
Christi, Texas 78412, and would like to hear from brethren....
Ken Getter who has been at Anderson, Indiana, is now at Bonne
Terre, where he will carry on an evangelistic and training
program in the Lead Belt area.... A forum on unity will be held
at Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, November 23-26, with Darrell Bolin
presiding. Brethren from every segment of the restoration
movement are expected to appear on the forum, which gives promise
of being an outstanding meeting.... Leroy Garrett presented a
series of messages at the School of the Ministry, held each year
at Milligan College, and reports an interesting time enjoyed by
all who attended.... We have a few copies of the book
Evangelistic Illustrations, by Al Bryant. This clothbound
volume usually sells for $1.95, but we will mail you a copy for
$1.00, plus ten cents postage, while our supply lasts.... We are
deeply indebted to Paul H. Smith, Grand Cayman, British West
Indies, for a beautiful official first day cover with the stamp
commemorating the 400th anniversary of the birth of William
Shakespeare. Only those who are first day of issue collectors
understand what this means to one who has the "bug".... A letter
from Ludington, Michigan, says, "Personally, your paper with more
shorter articles is better." In the same mail comes one from
North Carolina with this statement, "Please get back to the
lengthier provocative articles with all of the meat in them."
Now, what shall we do?.... We regret to report that Rosemary
Keesling was taken to the hospital in Washington, D.C., for
surgery. She is the wife of Lee Keesling who works with
unfortunates in the Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center.... Sam
Davis, a faithful helper with Mission Messenger, was hospitalized
at Clarksburg, West Virginia, where it was determined that two of
the vertebra are deteriorating and causing the intense back pain
which he has been suffering.... William Hall, Snow Shoe,
Pennsylvania, was invited to speak to four Methodist
congregations in the area. To each one
he presented the plea for unity based upon a return to the word
of God as authority.... Bob Duncan has been granted a sabbatical
leave from his position at Illinois State University, to do
research in California. He will live in Pomona and assist the
brethren there during his tenure.... Barry Willbanks has been
awarded an "Honor Scholarship" at Harvard Theological Seminary
for the coming year as the result of top scholastic
attainment.... It was our privilege to speak on family night at
the Christian Men's Fellowship in Omaha, Nebraska, August 28, and
to address a breakfast meeting the next morning, attended by
brethren from Churches of Christ and Christian Churches in the
area.... Fred Waggoner, Corbin, Kentucky, is editor of the
Cumberland Evangelist, a paper with the "down home
touch" which those of us reared in the hills appreciate....
We regret to chronicle the death of Norman Walters, Tutor at
Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge, England. He was the
first president of the Alexander Campbell Society, which
was then known as "Christian Students Fellowship." Our brother
died on June 18.... We've got the most fabulous collection of
children's books for sale that you ever heard of. Included are

James and Roberta Kellogg, on the birth of Theresa Marie, August

Lynn, August 8.... I had the privilege of speaking to three large
and appreciative audiences at Pearson's Mill Christian Assembly
Grounds, near Converse, Indiana, September 1, 2. The question
periods were exhilarating and it was a joy to be with Rod Cameron
and family. Rod acted as master of ceremonies for the
meetings.... The Hartford (Illinois) Forum which annually brings
together men from the Disciples of Christ, Independent Christian
Churches, and Churches of Christ (noninstrument) will meet this
year on December 28, 29, with the first meeting at 2:00 p.m. on
December 28. The subject of whether or not there is a definite
scriptural pattern of church polity set forth in the scripture,
and if so, of what it consists, will be discussed by free men who
are under no compulsion to concur with one another or with the
congregational procedure at Hartford. There will be a question
period in which the audience will be allowed to question the
eight speakers. For information and reservations you are urged to

high school age will be held at Dunn Road Chapel, Saint Louis
County, Missouri during the Christmas vacation period.
