for two dear friends: Bryce Shirey, of Cerro Gordo, Illinois; and

Monticello, Kentucky, held a homecoming and dedication for the
home of Raccoon John Smith, October 20, 21. Smith established the
congregation there in 1831.... Mr. and Mrs. Alec Branning have
established the "Rolland Ehrman Scholarship Fund" at Emmanuel
School of Religion. Mrs. Branning is the daughter of our late

Minnesota Bible College, at Rochester, Minnesota.... We
congratulate Jim Russell on his editorship of the

which is exhibiting an ever-growing sense of freedom from
dogmatism.... Religious book sales increased $9 million dollars
from 1971 to 1972, reaching a total of $126 million for the

delivered a public message to 200 people on his 88th birthday,
which was the 70th anniversary of his first sermon. Brother
Bilson is a member of Park Avenue Christian Church, Saint Thomas,
Ontario, Canada. He was born in Derby, England.... Our brother,
Owen Still, Sr„ departed this life in Hawaii, on July 12. He was
a missionary in Japan before and after the war.... Joe Barnett,
Lubbock, Texas, was awarded the Doctor of Laws degree by
Pepperdine University on August 3.... More than 80 Christians
converged on Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for a campaign which
started October 8, under leadership of Marvin Bryant. The helpers
came from 17 states and Canada to assist in personal work....
Jaro Schubert, a former Roman Catholic priest, reports immersing
the first person from Czechoslovakia to be led to Christ by his
messages over World Radio.... Kenneth and Estelle Sinclair have
secured their visas to continue working in Seremban, Malaysia....
About 100 persons from the 21 congregations in Spain attended the
tenth lectureship held in Madrid.... The Scott Bartchy family
will return to this country on furlough after having been in
Tuebingen, Germany for five years, where Scott has been director
of the Institute for the Study of Christian Origins.... My book
containing the copies of Mission Messenger for 1972, and titled
The Divine Purpose is just about to go out of print. If
you should like a copy, you must write soon. The price is $2.95
per copy.... As soon as the December
issue of the paper is mailed out work will begin on binding the
1973 papers under the title The Question Box. You may
reserve a copy now to be billed upon delivery. We suggest that
you have your name placed on the list to receive the last three

Fellowship of Racial and Economic Equality has changed its name
to Southeast Institute, and has received its first annual
grant of $100,000 from the Lilly Endowment, for a three-year
program to train deans and counselors from predominantly Black
colleges. Several of those involved are brethren whom I have
known for many years.... The August issue of Integrity was
a good one, dealing with maintaining the work of the Spirit in

copy?... Wycliffe Bible translation missionary Esther Mattison is
in the Soviet Union with permission to do linguistic research
among several of the language groups of the Caucasus.... Clarence
M. Kelley, new head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation is a
baptized believer, and a member of the Christian Church. He has
served as a deacon and elder.... Bob Duncan is conducting a class
in "The Prophecy of Jeremiah" at the College of Christian Studies
on the campus of University of Illinois. Great!... I am blessed
by having received a copy of two books by my brother in the Lord,
H. Eugene Johnson, of Tampa, Florida. Brother Johnson, who is an
attorney, has written "The Declaration and Address for Today,"
and "The Current Reformation: Thoughts from Thomas Campbell."
Both are excellent analyses, and I am indebted to my brother for
these autographed copies.... The annual Preachers Workshop will
be held at Abilene Christian College, January 7, 8, 9, and for
the first time elders of congregations are invited to be present
for the discussions. The topics will include Woman's Place in
Church Activity; Liberalism in the Church; Organized Support for
Missions; Authority and Tenure of Elders; Responsible Christian
Journalism; and Brotherhood Politics.... I will address the
annual banquet of Eastern-Lake Land Christian Campus Ministry, at
Charleston, Illinois, on the evening of November 16.... It will
be my privilege to speak at Washington, Illinois, November 27, on
"Meeting Problems of Today's Youth."... December 5-7 I will be at
Rossville, Illinois in a series of studies in depth. God
willing.... The congregation at Hartford, Illinois celebrated its
fiftieth anniversary September 16. Although it has supported
evangelists in many places the brethren in Hartford have never
hired a minister but have always carried on their own work and
services through joint participation.... January 3-8 I will be
with brethren in Brazil in a conference in which Reuel Lemmons
will also share the teaching program.... January 3-February 2 I
will be speaking at the Writer's Workshop in Cincinnati, Ohio, in
which both new and seasoned writers will be given a great deal of
assistance in preparation of all kinds of Christian material. The
seminar will be directed by Standard Publishing and we urge you
to attend if you possibly can do so.
