Analysis and Indices to the Christian Baptist (1981) |
Chapter III:
Introduction
In compiling the index to the Christian Baptist, it was necessary to make many decisions concerning the entries in the index. This work was written under the direction of Professor Enos Dowling, and his advice has helped determine many of these decisions. Mr. Dowling's rules and method of indexing the Christian Magazine have been consulted in preparing this index.
Analytical entries. Many of the users of the index will not be familiar with the titles of the articles. The analytical or subject entries are given in preference to the title entries. These entries are indicated by the use of capital letters. Brackets show that the title is not in the original edition and has been supplied by the writer.
Bible. The Scriptures which are cited are in a separate index under the names of the individual books.
Capitalization. The first word in the title of an article has been capitalized; other words are capitalized only if they would be capitalized when standing alone.
Churches. Churches are listed in the following Manner: State, Town, Church, or State, Church. For example: [126]
Initials. Initials signed to the articles in the Christian Baptist are consistently given in the regular order: J. C. A., A. P., etc. Therefore, when more than one initial has been signed to an article, the entry made is as follows: A., J. C., for the initials J. C. A. Single initials have been indexed. Brackets are used to indicate that the initials have been supplied.
Institutions. See Persons, Places, Institutions.
Obituaries. An obituary notice is listed under the name of the person in the following manner:
Periodical designation. Five editions of the Christian Baptist are listed in this index. The various editions are identified in the following manner: Edition, Volume number (if any), Page number. For example: Original edition: O 1:15; Second edition, volume I: 2 ed. 1:15; Three-Volumes-in-Two: Volume I: 3/2 1:15; Volume 2: 3/2 2:15; the Burnet edition: B 15; and the Gospel Advocate edition; GA 1:15.
Persons, Places, Institutions. All references to persons, places, and institutions have been included in the [127] index. Some of these references may seem disappointing and of little value to some who may use the index but to others may prove to be of value and interest.
Places. See Persons, Places, Institutions.
Poems. Poems are found under the name of the author and under the entry "POEMS." Title entry for poems is made only under "POEMS."
Reviews. Reviews and notices of publications of interest are listed under the title of the periodical or the author of the article.
Title entries. See Analytical entries.
Titles of distinction. Titles of distinction are generally omitted. [128]
