Minor Changes from the Original Found in Later Editions

Chapter II:
Minor Changes from the Original Found in Later Editions

      Some minor changes that occur in the different editions have not been considered significant enough to provide a complete list. It is hoped that the examples given will indicate the changes.

Analysis of Indices

      The indices of the Christian Baptist reflect some of the changes that have occurred in the subsequent printings. The exception is the index to the Original edition, volume 1, and the second edition, volume 1. The index to these two editions are the same.

      The Burnet, Three-Volumes-in-Two, and the Gospel Advocate editions have different indices. As one would expect, the pagination of the indices is different. Further changes are noticed in the headings that are used in the index and the format or the arrangement of the material indexed. The location of the indices in the volumes also change, particularly in the Original edition. The location of the index will vary from the back of the book to the front of the volume within the seven volume set. Volumes 2, 3, 4, 5, have the indices in the front; volumes 1, 6, 7, [121] have the indices in the back. The index location for the remaining editions is as one normally expects, in the back of the book.

      The most outstanding feature of all these indices is the inadequacy of the index for the amount of material.

Internal Changes

      The internal changes occurring between the Original and the subsequent editions show a number of minor variations. These variations show the editorial changes between the editions by Alexander Campbell, David S. Burnet, and the editors of the Gospel Advocate Company. It is interesting to note these minor "touches" that have occurred under each editor's pen. Here are some examples of these changes.

Masthead Changes

      This section will compare the masthead changes in the five editions. The masthead is "the printed matter in a newspaper or periodical giving such pertinent details as the title, ownership, advertising and subscription rates." The masthead is also "the name of a newspaper displayed on the top of the first page."{1}

      Photocopies of specimen mastheads of the various editions are given to show these changes. [124]

Numerical Variations

      The numerical variations in this section can be summarized by stating that generally the original, second edition, three-volumes-in-two, and the Gospel Advocate editions use Arabic numbers for the number given. The Burnet edition generally spells the number out.
