Philip Mauro The Number of Man, 2nd Ed. [1919] |
The electronic edition of Philip Mauro's The Number of Man has been produced from a copy of the second edition published by Hamilton Brothers (Boston, MA: Scripture Truth Depot, 1909). The only new material contained in this edition is the "Appendix"; otherwise, there are no substantive textual differences between this and the first edition. Although not a true second edition (i. e., printed from a new setting of type), this printing has been denominated as "second edition" to distinguish it from the various earlier printings of the first edition. No no authoritative bibliographical record is available to distinguish the various editions, printings, and issues of this title.
According to the author's statement in the "Appendix," this second edition was issued "about one decade" after "the the manuscript was completed for the first edition of this volume." That the second edition is a printing of the first edition (not issued from a new setting of type), with the addition of a signature containing the "Appendix," intended to bring the work up to date after the end of World War I (1914-1918) is evidenced by the following: (1) the pagination and text pages through page 359 are identical; (2) the same points enumerated in the critical apparatus below appear in both editions; (3) the dates on the title and copyright pages have not been revised from the first publication in 1909; (4) the "Appendix" is not included in the "Contents" of the second edition. Based on internal evidence contained in the "Appendix," particularly statements about "the war" and "the world-war," the date of the second edition is supposed to be about 1919.
Thanks to the Simpson Bible Institute Library for providing a loan-copy of the book and to Adams Memorial Library for arranging the interlibrary loan.
Pagination in the electronic version has been represented by placing the page number in brackets following the last complete word on the printed page. Footnotes have been treated as consecutively numbered endnotes. Inconsistencies in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and typography have been retained; however, corrections for misspellings and other accidental corruptions have been offered. Emendations are as follows:
