FELLOWSHIP WITH THE "CHURCHES OF CHRIST"
That they all may be one; as thou Father art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. John 17:21.
In the United States, the course of the Restoration Movement was attended by a separation of a number of churches from the Disciples (principally in the South), owing to the long controversy which occurred, chiefly on the subject of instrumental music in worship and the use of societies in assisting to spread the gospel. This resulted in these churches being recorded in the United States Census for 1906, as "Churches of Christ". Something of the same feeling of separateness grew in certain churches in Canada, and more largely in Ontario, though without any seeking of a different classification. These matters are referred to here, simply as due in a comprehensive history of the Restoration Movement in Canada.
It is true through the years that Christian fellowship exists, and there have been many exchanges of the same officially within our groups. There has also been the recognition of Christian faith and obedience and desire for membership, wherever asked for. Is it not possible that in time the light of true Christian fellowship may reveal to all how lamentable is unnecessary division among brethren?
The compiler and others felt that our brethren of this group were entitled to a record in this development of the Restoration Movement in Canada, and this opportunity was afforded all church in January, 1942. From only thirteen churches information was shared as to their history or aims. These are carefully reported in Part Two in their local places as "Churches of Christ", though that name is shared with all "Disciple" groups as told elsewhere. These thirteen are indicated in the following list by an asterisk.*
On behalf of his brethren, the compiler takes this opportunity to express his cordial and Christian greetings to our sister Churches in Canada, and to express the hope that none are missing from the list. In this he is joined heartily by those associated with him. This is but the recognition of the deep truth of our sharing the fundamental fellowship with Christ in his program for the ages. [268]
May this be acceptably received that, from the standpoint of the Disciples, there exist undeveloped and highly desirable possibilities for both "branches" of the Restoration Movement in a union that would secure much needed co-operation in the various grand objectives wherein we agree, leaving both tolerantly free to cherish and practise any "expedients" which lie purely within the realm of opinion. In the realm of faith and obedience there are no two ways. We cannot insist upon that too strongly. Stranger things have been done in world affairs, in creating or recognizing the principle of 'unity in diversity'--the principle on which our great Commonwealth of Nations holds together. Can that not be attempted in the realm of Christian fellowship? Nothing but the suggestion is offered here, that the state of the world within our Western civilization and beyond it demands more than ever emphasis upon the fundamentals of our beliefs, than accentuating any minor disagreements whatsoever.
As it is years since fraternal agreements have even been discussed, might not the present juncture, when Christian thought and civilization seem most imperilled amidst the centuries indicate the crucial time that, together as brethren, we might stand in the simple and enduring fellowship of the first Twelve?
Hear This Apostolic Benediction
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:14-19.
