In H. Leo Boles, Biographical Sketches of Gospel Preachers (Nashville, Tenn., Gospel Advocate Company, 1922), no preacher of the total of forty born in Tennessee after 1820 attended either Bacon College (est. 1837) or Bethany (est. 1840) while eight attended either Franklin College or Burritt and 29 attended other institutions or none at all.
The writer has for a number of years attempted to compile a complete list of preachers active in the Cumberland region before A. Campbell's influence was felt. The list consists of approximately 200 names, all of whom, either directly or indirectly, were influenced by Barton W. Stone. Names of Baptists ministers - representing the earliest influence by Campbell in Tennessee - are included. e.g. John Calvin Smith, Jonathan H. Young, Joshua K. Speer, Calvin Curlee.
