John Egarian Dies
Our brother in the Lord, John Egarian, departed this life at Community
Hospital, Riverside, California, at the age of 94 years. His was an interesting life. He was born in
Batios, Syria, 14 miles from Antioch, on February 22, 1865, and learned to speak Armenian,
Turkish and Arabian. He was skilled in silkworm culture, and became a consultant on silk
production, while serving as mayor of his city for many years. He came to the United States in
1912, thus escaping the persecution of the Armenians by the Turks, at the close of World War 1.
His family, still abroad, endured the anguish of those days, until he could bring them to the
United States. It was the privilege of the editor to immerse this brother and his wife in 1939, at
the time when he was 74 years old. Our hearts go out to his aged companion and the family.
