Book Talk

[Page 62]

I still meet a lot of good brethren who have never read anything written by Elton Trueblood. Because I think they are missing out on some real soul food I want to mention four of his books I hope you will secure.

The Yoke of Christ contains 18 sermons. The titles are intriguing and the content challenging. One talk is titled "The Discipline of Discipleship" and in it, Trueblood says, "The stream which flows hither and yon over the lowlands, is not a useful source of power, even though it may carry a large volume of water. On the other hand, quite a small stream, if it is guided into a mill race, with sharp banks which prevent waste, may turn a large wheel and provide useful energy for tasks which men need to have done. What counts is not the total volume, but the power that is directed." He then tells you how to channel your power for good. The book is $1.25.

Foundations for Reconstruction is a book of new interpretations of the ten commandments as the basis of a new enduring moral order. The subject headings are fascinating. The one about observation of the sabbath is called "Freedom From the Angelic Fallacy." There are some terrific ideas for talks that people need to hear. The price of the paperback is only 95¢.

The Life We Prize is filled with statements like "Conscious humility is a contradiction in terms, since the adjective cancels out the noun...True humility is not thinking badly of oneself, which is only another form of attention to self. True humility is not thinking of oneself at all." It is $1.25.

Alternative to Futility has those great chapters called: Beyond Diagnosis; The Habit of Adventure; The Fellowship of the Concerned; The Recovery of Discipline; and The Grace of Impatience. It is a book about which you need to think and upon which you should meditate. It costs only 95¢.

Runaway World is a little volume by Michael Green which I have read twice and glanced at a lot of times. The author denies that Christian belief is escapism and shows that the real escapists are those who will not face up to the evidence for Christian faith. I urge every college and university student to read it and discuss it with friends. It is $1.50.

A Second Touch by Keith Miller seeks to involve you in vital, creative living. It deals with the renewing of the institutional church so that pulpit and people understand and love each other as honest human beings. It is so honest that sometimes it is a little embarrassing. It is $1.25.

What Is Human? This book by T. M. Kitwood is the fairest approach I have ever seen to the three views of man advanced today, the existentialist, humanist and Christian. The author takes the position that no one can reach maturity or more than superficial happiness without coming to grips with the question. It is deep but it is plain. It costs $1.50.

The Parable of Telstar and Other Talks is my own volume of special talks. I think you would like the approach that is made in the book and I would like to see you share it with others. It sells for $2.95.

I feel that we are going to have to do more solid reading if we meet the challenge of this intellectual age and I like to suggest books which have helped me. Because of the rise in mailing costs we would appreciate it if you could send a little extra to pay shipping costs for your order.
