Fifty Years of The Word and Work, 1916-1965: A Cumulative Index has been compiled from the annual indices of the magazine (1916-1935, 1937, 1939-1965) and, the tables of contents (1936, 1938). Thanks to Alice Mullins, Librarian at Portland Christian School, for providing Xerox copies of the indices.

      Of the several possible ways of presenting this data, the MLA form for citations of periodicals has been preferred here, with the information arranged alphabetically by author, and then the contributions chronologically. Articles, reports, reviews, poems with no author indicated have been grouped chronologically under "Unsigned." The index is presented in twenty-four alphabetically arranged sections for searches by author; the index is available also in a single file (871 kb) for doing searches across the fifty years of the magazine.

      Further improvements contemplated for the present work are verifying the information from the annual indices; including titles/subtitles for articles, especially those within series; providing keywords when the subject is not evident from the title; adding issue number and month of publication for each article; supplying range of pages for each article. These amplificatons will require examination of each issue of The Word and Work. While the issues for volumes 10-59 (1916-1950) are available on microfilm, it will be necessary to borrow bound volumes and/or individual issues for the years 1951-1965.
