Barton W. Stone The Christian Messenger, Volume 1 (1826-1827) |
ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC EDITION
The electronic versions of the essays, letters, reports, and notes by Barton W. Stone published in Volume 1 have been transcribed from the Star Bible Publications reprint (1978) of The Christian Messenger, ed. Barton W. Stone (Georgetown, KY: Barton W. Stone, 1826-1827).
The nine-part series "History of the Christian Church in the West" (pp. 74-79, 97-101, 121-125, 145-151, 169-173, 193-198, 217-221, 241-245, 265-269) is from the text transcribed, to which additional formatting has been added. "To the Christian Baptist" (pp. 204-209) was reprinted in The Christian Baptist, Vol. 5, No. 3, October 1827, pp. 378-379, along with Alexander Campbell's reply. A critical appartatus detailing the variants from the first publication and the reprinting of the letter is included in the editor's notes there.
Only nine pages in Number 11 (September 25, 1827) are numbered, and those incorrectly (page 242 should be numbered as 241; 243, as 245; 245, as 247; 246, as 248; 247, as 249; 248, as 250; 253, as 255; 254, as 256; 258, as 260). The erratic and missing pagination of the number has been corrected (pages 241-264) in the electronic version.
No title page appears in the printed edition of The Christian Messenger; that added to the electronic version is intended to convey the facts of publication. Pagination in the electronic version has been represented by placing the page number in brackets following the last complete word on the printed page. Footnotes in the printed text have been treated as sequentially numbered endnotes. Extended quotations in the printed text have been set off as block quotations. I have let stand variations and inconsistencies in the author's use of italics, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling in the works. Emendations are as follows:
