Centennial Convention Report (1910)

Committee on Recommendations

      1. That the Disciples of Christ be congratulated upon the success that has attended their Centennial celebration, and that all of its sacred impulses and enthusiasms be encouraged to find their expression in very greatly enlarged enterprises and forward movements in every direction and wherever Christ leads. That we recommend especially the cultivation of those rich spiritual graces which are at the heart of all true loyalty to Christ.

      2. That a committee of ten be appointed by the chairman of this Convention upon the co-ordination and unification of our missionary activities, five members to be the corresponding secretaries of the American Christian Missionary Society, the Foreign Christian Missionary Society, the Church Extension Society, the National Benevolent Association and the Christian Woman's Board of Missions. Each of these societies shall pay the expenses of the attendance of its secretary upon the meetings of the committee, and the expenses of the other members shall be paid from the treasury of the American Christian Missionary Society. The chairman of the committee shall be named by the Convention and it shall meet in Cincinnati, O. It is recommended that sufficient time be given to the meetings of the committee to thoroughly consider the matters entrusted to it.

This committee shall consider those large, general and common interests which belong to all of the societies, and for which at present there is no provision. It shall give special consideration to the following items:

1st. The possibility and advisability of some plan for the expression of the essential unity of all of our missionary societies. 2d. The possibility and advisability of a unification of the publications of these societies. 3d. The possibility and advisability of a uniform plan of organization for all the States in districts and counties, to secure a more thorough cultivation of the field and a more perfect command of our resources. 4th. The possibility and advisability of some plan of apportionment whereby the States and districts and counties shall work together, so that the offerings of the local churches shall be simplified and the whole scheme of missionary offerings be made more effective. 5th. The advisability of annual meetings of national and State secretaries in the interests of unity, uniformity and effectiveness.

      3. We suggest that a day be set apart in all of our churches for a consideration of the claims of the ministry of the gospel, and that emphasis be laid on our Lord's command, "Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest that he will send forth laborers unto his harvest." We recommend that suitable young men be sought out and encouraged to enter the ministry, and that better educational facilities be provided for their training in view of the urgent demand for increased efficiency. We recommend that churches, as churches, and the various organizations of the churches, Endeavor societies, men's classes, etc., etc., be urged to "buy up" the opportunity of aiding worthy young men whenever it is necessary, to thoroughly equip themselves for this sacred service.

C. M. CHILTON, Chairman.
B. C. DEWEESE,
C. A. FINCH,
CHARLES REIGN SCOVILLE.
(Other members not present.)

      The report was adopted.

The Chair appointed the following Committee on Co-ordination and Unification of Missionary Interests: C. M. Chilton, Missouri, Chairman; Finis Idleman, Iowa; E. L. Powell, Kentucky; Frederick A. Henry, Ohio; Geo. F. Rand, New York, and the secretaries of the societies designated in the report.

The following fraternal telegram was received from the Synod of the United [227] Presbyterian Church of the United States of America: "Extend your body cordial greetings and congratulations. See Eph. 3:14-19." This is the Scripture of the message: "For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that ye may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be strong to apprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, that ye may be filled unto all the fulness of God."
