LITERATURE.

The secretary of the board has in his office over five hundred different kinds of temperance books and leaflets gathered from every possible source, but the chief literature published by the board has been the quarterly temperance leaflets for Bible schools for temperance day. Last June we sent these leaflets out free to over five thousand of our Sunday-schools, and a sufficient number were sent to each school to supply their officers and Bible-school teachers.

RECOMMENDATIONS.

      1. That we hail with joy the good tidings that another State during the past year (Tennessee) has abolished the liquor traffic, not only the saloon, but the brewery and distillery as well. And we rejoice to know that better temperance laws are being enacted in many States, and that an increased number of villages, cities and counties have abolished the saloon.

      2. That a temperance superintendent be appointed in each of our churches to co-operate with its minister and our American Temperance Board, and with the Bible school and all the departments of the church, in having more efficient educational temperance work done.

      3. That each minister of the church of Christ be requested to preach at least one temperance sermon each year to every congregation that he serves and take an offering for this temperance department at a time most convenient to the church.

      4. That each Bible school have a total abstinence pledge-signing at least one Lord's day of each year, and a record of all who sign these pledges be kept in each school.

      5. That the plan of issuing a special quarterly temperance leaflet by our Temperance Board for teachers and [233] officers of our Bible schools each quarterly temperance day be continued, and that the offer of our Temperance Board to furnish this special temperance leaflet to our Bible schools four times a year if the school will contribute one of its collections each year, is commendable, and should be accepted by our schools, as many have already done.

      6. That we express to the Christian and the Standard Publishing Companies and others, our high appreciation of the improved temperance lessons they have supplied, during the past year and more, and we hope that this marked improvement will continue until the quarterly temperance lessons are made the most attractive and helpful of all the lessons of the year.

      7. That the union of the temperance committees or boards of the various religious bodies into the Inter-church Temperance Council (as consummated last December at Philadelphia) be highly commended. As we stand for the union of all God's people, so we stand for the union of all the churches and all temperance organizations for the utter destruction of alcoholic beverages, both their manufacture and their supply to the people.

      8. That we heartily endorse the resolution passed by the Brotherhood of the Disciples of Christ at their recent meeting, regarding the abolition of the saloons.

Respectfully submitted,
            JUDGE S. R. ARTMAN, Pres.
            HARRY G. HILL, Vice-Pres.
            A. L. ORCUTT, Treas.
            DR. H. J. HALL,
                  Sec. and Managing Officer.
