2:1  fuerunt vero et pseudoprophetae in      1.  But there were false prophets also
populo sicut et in vobis erunt magistri      among the people, even as there shall
mendaces qui introducent sectas              be false teachers among you, who
perditionis et eum qui emit eos Dominum      privily shall bring in damnable
negant superducentes sibi celerem            heresies, even denying the Lord that
perditionem                                  bought them, and bring upon themselves
                                             swift destruction.

2:2  et multi sequentur eorum luxurias       2.  And many shall follow their
per quos via veritatis blasphemabitur        pernicious ways; by reason of whom the
                                             way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

2:3  et in avaritia fictis verbis de         3.  And through covetousness shall they
vobis negotiabuntur quibus iudicium iam      with feigned words make merchandise of
olim non cessat et perditio eorum non        you: whose judgment now of a long time
dormitat                                     lingereth not, and their damnation
                                             slumbereth not.

2:4  si enim Deus angelis peccantibus        4.  For if God spared not the angels
non pepercit sed rudentibus inferni          that sinned, but cast them down to
detractos in tartarum tradidit in            hell, and delivered them into chains of
iudicium cruciatos reservari                 darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

2:5  et originali mundo non pepercit         5.  And spared not the old world, but
sed octavum Noe iustitiae praeconem          saved Noah the eighth person, a
custodivit diluvium mundo impiorum           preacher of righteousness, bringing in
inducens                                     the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

2:6  et civitates Sodomorum et               6.  And turning the cities of Sodom and
Gomorraeorum in cinerem redigens             Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with
eversione damnavit exemplum eorum qui        an overthrow, making them an ensample
impie acturi sunt ponens                     unto those that after should live
                                             ungodly;

2:7  et iustum Loth oppressum a              7.  And delivered just Lot, vexed with
nefandorum iniuria conversatione eruit       the filthy conversation of the wicked:

2:8  aspectu enim et auditu iustus erat      8.  (For that righteous man dwelling
habitans apud eos qui diem de die            among them, in seeing and hearing,
animam iustam iniquis operibus               vexed his righteous soul from day to
cruciabant                                   day with their unlawful deeds;)

2:9  novit Dominus pios de temptatione       9.  The Lord knoweth how to deliver the
eripere iniquos vero in diem iudicii         godly out of temptations, and to
cruciandos reservare                         reserve the unjust unto the day of
                                             judgment to be punished:

2:10  magis autem eos qui post carnem        10.  But chiefly them that walk after
in concupiscentia inmunditiae ambulant       the flesh in the lust of uncleanness,
dominationemque contemnunt audaces sibi      and despise government. Presumptuous
placentes sectas non metuunt                 are they, selfwilled, they are not
blasphemantes                                afraid to speak evil of dignities.

2:11  ubi angeli fortitudine et virtute      11.  Whereas angels, which are greater
cum sint maiores non portant adversum        in power and might, bring not railing
se execrabile iudicium                       accusation against them before the Lord.

2:12  hii vero velut inrationabilia          12.  But these, as natural brute
pecora naturaliter in captionem et in        beasts, made to be taken and destroyed,
perniciem in his quae ignorant               speak evil of the things that they
blasphemantes in corruptione sua et          understand not; and shall utterly
peribunt                                     perish in their own corruption;

2:13  percipientes mercedem iniustitiae      13.  And shall receive the reward of
voluptatem existimantes diei delicias        unrighteousness, as they that count it
coinquinationes et maculae deliciis          pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots
affluentes in conviviis suis                 they are and blemishes, sporting
luxuriantes vobiscum                         themselves with their own deceivings
                                             while they feast with you;

2:14  oculos habentes plenos adulterio       14.  Having eyes full of adultery, and
et incessabiles delicti pellicentes          that cannot cease from sin; beguiling
animas instabiles cor exercitatum            unstable souls: an heart they have
avaritiae habentes maledictionis filii       exercised with covetous practices;
                                             cursed children:

2:15  derelinquentes rectam viam             15.  Which have forsaken the right way,
erraverunt secuti viam Balaam ex Bosor       and are gone astray, following the way
qui mercedem iniquitatis amavit              of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved
                                             the wages of unrighteousness;

2:16  correptionem vero habuit suae          16.  But was rebuked for his iniquity:
vesaniae subiugale mutum in hominis          the dumb ass speaking with man's voice
voce loquens prohibuit prophetae             forbad the madness of the prophet.

2:17  hii sunt fontes sine aqua et           17.  These are wells without water,
nebulae turbinibus exagitatae quibus         clouds that are carried with a tempest;
caligo tenebrarum reservatur                 to whom the mist of darkness is
                                             reserved for ever.

2:18  superba enim vanitatis loquentes       18.  For when they speak great swelling
pellicent in desideriis carnis luxuriae      words of vanity, they allure through
eos qui paululum effugiunt qui in            the lusts of the flesh, through much
errore conversantur                          wantonness, those that were clean
                                             escaped from them who live in error.

2:19  libertatem illis promittentes cum      19.  While they promise them liberty,
ipsi servi sint corruptionis a quo enim      they themselves are the servants of
quis superatus est huius et servus est       corruption: for of whom a man is
                                             overcome, of the same is he brought in
                                             bondage.

2:20  si enim refugientes                    20.  For if after they have escaped the
coinquinationes mundi in cognitione          pollutions of the world through the
Domini nostri et salvatoris Iesu             knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus
Christi his rursus inpliciti superantur      Christ, they are again entangled
facta sunt eis posteriora deteriora          therein, and overcome, the latter end
prioribus                                    is worse with them than the beginning.

2:21  melius enim erat illis non             21.  For it had been better for them
cognoscere viam iustitiae quam post          not to have known the way of
agnitionem retrorsum converti ab eo          righteousness, than, after they have
quod illis traditum est sancto mandato       known it, to turn from the holy
                                             commandment delivered unto them.

2:22  contigit enim eis illud veri           22.  But it is happened unto them
proverbii canis reversus ad suum             according to the true proverb, The dog
vomitum et sus lota in volutabro luti        is turned to his own vomit again; and
                                             the sow that was washed to her
                                             wallowing in the mire.
