1:1 Paulus apostolus Christi Iesu per 1. Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by
voluntatem Dei secundum promissionem the will of God, according to the
vitae quae est in Christo Iesu promise of life which is in Christ
                                             Jesus,

1:2 Timotheo carissimo filio gratia 2. To Timothy, my dearly beloved son:
misericordia pax a Deo Patre et Christo Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the
Iesu Domino nostro Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

1:3 gratias ago Deo cui servio a 3. I thank God, whom I serve from my
progenitoribus in conscientia pura quam forefathers with pure conscience, that
sine intermissione habeam tui memoriam without ceasing I have remembrance of
in orationibus meis nocte ac die             thee in my prayers night and day;

1:4 desiderans te videre memor 4. Greatly desiring to see thee, being
lacrimarum tuarum ut gaudio implear mindful of thy tears, that I may be
                                             filled with joy;

1:5 recordationem accipiens eius fidei 5. When I call to remembrance the
quae est in te non ficta quae et unfeigned faith that is in thee, which
habitavit primum in avia tua Loide et dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois,
matre tua Eunice certus sum autem quod and thy mother Eunice; and I am
et in te persuaded that in thee also.

1:6 propter quam causam admoneo te ut 6. Wherefore I put thee in remembrance
resuscites gratiam Dei quae est in te that thou stir up the gift of God,
per inpositionem manuum mearum which is in thee by the putting on of
                                             my hands.

1:7 non enim dedit nobis Deus spiritum 7. For God hath not given us the
timoris sed virtutis et dilectionis et spirit of fear; but of power, and of
sobrietatis love, and of a sound mind.

1:8 noli itaque erubescere testimonium 8. Be not thou therefore ashamed of
Domini nostri neque me vinctum eius sed the testimony of our Lord, nor of me
conlabora evangelio secundum virtutem his prisoner: but be thou partaker of
Dei the afflictions of the gospel according
                                             to the power of God;

1:9 qui nos liberavit et vocavit 9. Who hath saved us, and called us
vocatione sancta non secundum opera with an holy calling, not according to
nostra sed secundum propositum suum et our works, but according to his own
gratiam quae data est nobis in Christo purpose and grace, which was given us
Iesu ante tempora saecularia in Christ Jesus before the world began,

1:10 manifestata est autem nunc per 10. But is now made manifest by the
inluminationem salvatoris nostri Iesu appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ,
Christi qui destruxit quidem mortem who hath abolished death, and hath
inluminavit autem vitam et brought life and immortality to light
incorruptionem per evangelium through the gospel:

1:11 in quo positus sum ego 11. Whereunto I am appointed a
praedicator et apostolus et magister preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher
gentium of the Gentiles.

1:12 ob quam causam etiam haec patior 12. For the which cause I also suffer
sed non confundor scio enim cui credidi these things: nevertheless I am not
et certus sum quia potens est depositum ashamed: for I know whom I have
meum servare in illum diem believed, and am persuaded that he is
able to keep that which I have
committed unto him against that day.

1:13 formam habe sanorum verborum quae 13. Hold fast the form of sound words,
a me audisti in fide et dilectione in which thou hast heard of me, in faith
Christo Iesu and love which is in Christ Jesus.

1:14 bonum depositum custodi per 14. That good thing which was
Spiritum Sanctum qui habitat in nobis committed unto thee keep by the Holy
                                             Ghost which dwelleth in us.

1:15 scis hoc quod aversi sunt a me 15. This thou knowest, that all they
omnes qui in Asia sunt ex quibus est which are in Asia be turned away from
Phygelus et Hermogenes me; of whom are Phygellus and
                                             Hermogenes.

1:16 det misericordiam Dominus 16. The Lord give mercy unto the house
Onesifori domui quia saepe me of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed
refrigeravit et catenam meam non erubuit me, and was not ashamed of my chain:

1:17 sed cum Romam venisset sollicite 17. But, when he was in Rome, he
me quaesivit et invenit sought me out very diligently, and
                                             found me.

1:18 det illi Dominus invenire 18. The Lord grant unto him that he
misericordiam a Domino in illa die et may find mercy of the Lord in that day:
quanta Ephesi ministravit melius tu and in how many things he ministered
nosti unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very
                                             well.
