2:1  tu ergo fili mi confortare in           1.  Thou therefore, my son, be strong
gratia quae est in Christo Iesu              in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2:2  et quae audisti a me per multos         2.  And the things that thou hast heard
testes haec commenda fidelibus               of me among many witnesses, the same
hominibus qui idonei erunt et alios          commit thou to faithful men, who shall
docere                                       be able to teach others also.

2:3  labora sicut bonus miles Christi        3.  Thou therefore endure hardness, as
Iesu                                         a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

2:4  nemo militans inplicat se negotiis      4.  No man that warreth entangleth
saecularibus ut ei placeat cui se            himself with the affairs of this life;
probavit                                     that he may please him who hath chosen
                                             him to be a soldier.

2:5  nam et qui certat in agone non          5.  And if a man also strive for
coronatur nisi legitime certaverit           masteries, yet is he not crowned,
                                             except he strive lawfully.

2:6  laborantem agricolam oportet            6.  The husbandman that laboureth must
primum de fructibus accipere                 be first partaker of the fruits.

2:7  intellege quae dico dabit enim          7.  Consider what I say; and the Lord
tibi Dominus in omnibus intellectum          give thee understanding in all things.

2:8  memor esto Iesum Christum               8.  Remember that Jesus Christ of the
resurrexisse a mortuis ex semine David       seed of David was raised from the dead
secundum evangelium meum                     according to my gospel:

2:9  in quo laboro usque ad vincula          9.  Wherein I suffer trouble, as an
quasi male operans sed verbum Dei non        evil doer, even unto bonds; but the

2:10  ideo omnia sustineo propter            10.  Therefore I endure all things for
electos ut et ipsi salutem consequantur      the elect's sakes, that they may also

2:11  fidelis sermo nam si conmortui         11.  It is a faithful saying: For if we
sumus et convivemus                          be dead with him, we shall also live

2:12  si sustinemus et conregnabimus si      12.  If we suffer, we shall also reign
negabimus et ille negabit nos                with him: if we deny him, he also will
                                             deny us:

2:13  si non credimus ille fidelis           13.  If we believe not, yet he abideth
manet negare se ipsum non potest             faithful: he cannot deny himself.

2:14  haec commone testificans coram         14.  Of these things put them in
Domino noli verbis contendere in nihil       remembrance, charging them before the
utile ad subversionem audientium             Lord that they strive not about words
                                             to no profit, but to the subverting of
                                             the hearers.

2:15  sollicite cura te ipsum                15.  Study to shew thyself approved
probabilem exhibere Deo operarium            unto God, a workman that needeth not to
inconfusibilem recte tractantem verbum       be ashamed, rightly dividing the word
veritatis                                    of truth.

2:16  profana autem inaniloquia devita       16.  But shun profane and vain
multum enim proficient ad impietatem         babblings: for they will increase unto
                                             more ungodliness.

2:17  et sermo eorum ut cancer serpit        17.  And their word will eat as doth a
ex quibus est Hymeneus et Philetus           canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and
                                             Philetus;

2:18  qui a veritate exciderunt              18.  Who concerning the truth have
dicentes resurrectionem iam factam et        erred, saying that the resurrection is
subvertunt quorundam fidem                   past already; and overthrow the faith
                                             of some.

2:19  sed firmum fundamentum Dei stetit      19.  Nevertheless the foundation of God

qui sunt eius et discedat ab iniquitate      Lord knoweth them that are his. And,
omnis qui nominat nomen Domini               Let every one that nameth the name of
                                             Christ depart from iniquity.

2:20  in magna autem domo non solum          20.  But in a great house there are not
sunt vasa aurea et argentea sed et           only vessels of gold and of silver, but
lignea et fictilia et quaedam quidem in      also of wood and of earth; and some to
honorem quaedam autem in contumeliam         honour, and some to dishonour.

2:21  si quis ergo emundaverit se ab         21.  If a man therefore purge himself
istis erit vas in honorem sanctificatum      from these, he shall be a vessel unto
et utile Domino ad omne opus bonum           honour, sanctified, and meet for the
paratum                                      master's use, and prepared unto every
                                             good work.

2:22  iuvenilia autem desideria fuge         22.  Flee also youthful lusts: but
sectare vero iustitiam fidem caritatem       follow righteousness, faith, charity,
pacem cum his qui invocant Dominum de        peace, with them that call on the Lord
corde puro                                   out of a pure heart.

2:23  stultas autem et sine disciplina       23.  But foolish and unlearned
quaestiones devita sciens quia generant      questions avoid, knowing that they do
lites                                        gender strifes.

2:24  servum autem Domini non oportet        24.  And the servant of the Lord must
litigare sed mansuetum esse ad omnes         not strive; but be gentle unto all men,
docibilem patientem                          apt to teach, patient,

2:25  cum modestia corripientem eos qui      25.  In meekness instructing those that
resistunt nequando det illis Deus            oppose themselves; if God peradventure
paenitentiam ad cognoscendam veritatem       will give them repentance to the
                                             acknowledging of the truth;

2:26  et resipiscant a diaboli laqueis       26.  And that they may recover
a quo capti tenentur ad ipsius               themselves out of the snare of the
voluntatem                                   devil, who are taken captive by him at
                                             his will.
