1:1 Paulus et Timotheus servi Iesu 1. Paul and Timotheus, the servants of
Christi omnibus sanctis in Christo Iesu Jesus Christ, to all the saints in
qui sunt Philippis cum episcopis et Christ Jesus which are at Philippi,
diaconis with the bishops and deacons:

1:2 gratia vobis et pax a Deo Patre 2. Grace be unto you, and peace, from
nostro et Domino Iesu Christo God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus
                                             Christ.

1:3 gratias ago Deo meo in omni 3. I thank my God upon every
memoria vestri                               remembrance of you,

1:4 semper in cunctis orationibus meis 4. Always in every prayer of mine for
pro omnibus vobis cum gaudio you all making request with joy,
deprecationem faciens

1:5 super communicatione vestra in 5. For your fellowship in the gospel
evangelio a prima die usque nunc             from the first day until now;

1:6 confidens hoc ipsum quia qui 6. Being confident of this very thing,
coepit in vobis opus bonum perficiet that he which hath begun a good work in
usque in diem Christi Iesu you will perform it until the day of
                                             Jesus Christ:

1:7 sicut est mihi iustum hoc sentire 7. Even as it is meet for me to think
pro omnibus vobis eo quod habeam in this of you all, because I have you in
corde vos et in vinculis meis et in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds,
defensione et confirmatione evangelii and in the defence and confirmation of
socios gaudii mei omnes vos esse the gospel, ye all are partakers of my
                                             grace.

1:8 testis enim mihi est Deus quomodo 8. For God is my record, how greatly I
cupiam omnes vos in visceribus Christi long after you all in the bowels of
Iesu                                         Jesus Christ.

1:9 et hoc oro ut caritas vestra magis 9. And this I pray, that your love may
ac magis abundet in scientia et omni abound yet more and more in knowledge
sensu                                        and in all judgment;

1:10 ut probetis potiora ut sitis 10. That ye may approve things that
sinceres et sine offensa in diem Christi are excellent; that ye may be sincere
                                             and without offence till the day of
                                             Christ.

1:11 repleti fructu iustitiae per 11. Being filled with the fruits of
Christum Iesum in gloriam et laudem Dei righteousness, which are by Jesus
                                             Christ, unto the glory and praise of
                                             God.

1:12 scire autem vos volo fratres quia 12. But I would ye should understand,
quae circa me sunt magis ad profectum brethren, that the things which
venerunt evangelii happened unto me have fallen out rather
                                             unto the furtherance of the gospel;

1:13 ita ut vincula mea manifesta 13. So that my bonds in Christ are
fierent in Christo in omni praetorio et manifest in all the palace, and in all
in ceteris omnibus                           other places;

1:14 et plures e fratribus in Domino 14. And many of the brethren in the
confidentes vinculis meis abundantius Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are
audere sine timore verbum Dei loqui much more bold to speak the word
                                             without fear.

1:15 quidam quidem et propter invidiam 15. Some indeed preach Christ even of
et contentionem quidam autem et propter envy and strife; and some also of good
bonam voluntatem Christum praedicant         will:

1:16 quidam ex caritate scientes 16. The one preach Christ of
quoniam in defensionem evangelii contention, not sincerely, supposing to
positus sum add affliction to my bonds:

1:17 quidam autem ex contentione 17. But the other of love, knowing
Christum adnuntiant non sincere that I am set for the defence of the
existimantes pressuram se suscitare          gospel.
vinculis meis

1:18 quid enim dum omni modo sive per 18. What then? notwithstanding, every
occasionem sive per veritatem Christus way, whether in pretence, or in truth,
adnuntiatur et in hoc gaudeo sed et Christ is preached; and I therein do
gaudebo rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

1:19 scio enim quia hoc mihi proveniet 19. For I know that this shall turn to
in salutem per vestram orationem et my salvation through your prayer, and
subministrationem Spiritus Iesu Christi the supply of the Spirit of Jesus
                                             Christ,

1:20 secundum expectationem et spem 20. According to my earnest
meam quia in nullo confundar sed in expectation and my hope, that in
omni fiducia sicut semper et nunc nothing I shall be ashamed, but that
magnificabitur Christus in corpore meo with all boldness, as always, so now
sive per vitam sive per mortem also Christ shall be magnified in my
                                             body, whether it be by life, or by
                                             death.

1:21 mihi enim vivere Christus est et 21. For to me to live is Christ, and
mori lucrum to die is gain.

1:22 quod si vivere in carne hic mihi 22. But if I live in the flesh, this
fructus operis est et quid eligam ignoro is the fruit of my labour: yet what I
                                             shall choose I wot not.

1:23 coartor autem e duobus desiderium 23. For I am in a strait betwixt two,
habens dissolvi et cum Christo esse having a desire to depart, and to be
multo magis melius with Christ; which is far better:

1:24 permanere autem in carne magis 24. Nevertheless to abide in the flesh
necessarium est propter vos is more needful for you.

1:25 et hoc confidens scio quia manebo 25. And having this confidence, I know
et permanebo omnibus vobis ad profectum that I shall abide and continue with
vestrum et gaudium fidei you all for your furtherance and joy of
                                             faith;

1:26 ut gratulatio vestra abundet in 26. That your rejoicing may be more
Christo Iesu in me per meum adventum abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my
iterum ad vos coming to you again.

1:27 tantum digne evangelio Christi 27. Only let your conversation be as
conversamini ut sive cum venero et it becometh the gospel of Christ: that
videro vos sive absens audiam de vobis whether I come and see you, or else be
quia stetistis uno spiritu unianimes absent, I may hear of your affairs,
conlaborantes fide evangelii that ye stand fast in one spirit, with
                                             one mind striving together for the
                                             faith of the gospel;

1:28 et in nullo terreamini ab 28. And in nothing terrified by your
adversariis quae est illis causa adversaries: which is to them an
perditionis vobis autem salutis et hoc evident token of perdition, but to you
a Deo of salvation, and that of God.

1:29 quia vobis donatum est pro 29. For unto you it is given in the
Christo non solum ut in eum credatis behalf of Christ, not only to believe
sed ut etiam pro illo patiamini              on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

1:30 eundem certamen habentes qualem 30. Having the same conflict which ye
et vidistis in me et nunc audistis de me saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
