2:1 si qua ergo consolatio in Christo 1. If there be therefore any
si quod solacium caritatis si qua consolation in Christ, if any comfort
societas spiritus si quid viscera et of love, if any fellowship of the
miserationes Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
2:2 implete gaudium meum ut idem 2. Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be
sapiatis eandem caritatem habentes likeminded, having the same love, being
unianimes id ipsum sentientes of one accord, of one mind.
2:3 nihil per contentionem neque per 3. Let nothing be done through strife
inanem gloriam sed in humilitate or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind
superiores sibi invicem arbitrantes let each esteem other better than
themselves.
2:4 non quae sua sunt singuli 4. Look not every man on his own
considerantes sed et ea quae aliorum things, but every man also on the
things of others.
2:5 hoc enim sentite in vobis quod et 5. Let this mind be in you, which was
in Christo Iesu also in Christ Jesus:
2:6 qui cum in forma Dei esset non 6. Who, being in the form of God,
rapinam arbitratus est esse se aequalem thought it not robbery to be equal with
Deo God:
2:7 sed semet ipsum exinanivit formam 7. But made himself of no reputation,
servi accipiens in similitudinem and took upon him the form of a
hominum factus et habitu inventus ut servant, and was made in the likeness
homo of men:
2:8 humiliavit semet ipsum factus 8. And being found in fashion as a
oboediens usque ad mortem mortem autem man, he humbled himself, and became
crucis obedient unto death, even the death of
the cross.
2:9 propter quod et Deus illum 9. Wherefore God also hath highly
exaltavit et donavit illi nomen super exalted him, and given him a name which
omne nomen is above every name:
2:10 ut in nomine Iesu omne genu 10. That at the name of Jesus every
flectat caelestium et terrestrium et knee should bow, of things in heaven,
infernorum and things in earth, and things under
the earth;
2:11 et omnis lingua confiteatur quia 11. And that every tongue should
Dominus Iesus Christus in gloria est confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to
Dei Patris the glory of God the Father.
2:12 itaque carissimi mei sicut semper 12. Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have
oboedistis non ut in praesentia mei always obeyed, not as in my presence
tantum sed multo magis nunc in absentia only, but now much more in my absence,
mea cum metu et tremore vestram salutem work out your own salvation with fear
operamini and trembling.
2:13 Deus est enim qui operatur in 13. For it is God which worketh in you
vobis et velle et perficere pro bona both to will and to do of his good
voluntate pleasure.
2:14 omnia autem facite sine 14. Do all things without murmurings
murmurationibus et haesitationibus and disputings:
2:15 ut sitis sine querella et 15. That ye may be blameless and
simplices filii Dei sine reprehensione harmless, the sons of God, without
in medio nationis pravae et perversae rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and
inter quos lucetis sicut luminaria in perverse nation, among whom ye shine as
mundo lights in the world;
2:16 verbum vitae continentes ad 16. Holding forth the word of life;
gloriam meam in die Christi quia non in that I may rejoice in the day of
vacuum cucurri neque in vacuum laboravi Christ, that I have not run in vain,
neither laboured in vain.
2:17 sed et si immolor supra 17. Yea, and if I be offered upon the
sacrificium et obsequium fidei vestrae sacrifice and service of your faith, I
gaudeo et congratulor omnibus vobis joy, and rejoice with you all.
2:18 id ipsum autem et vos gaudete et 18. For the same cause also do ye joy,
congratulamini mihi and rejoice with me.
2:19 spero autem in Domino Iesu 19. But I trust in the Lord Jesus to
Timotheum cito me mittere ad vos ut et send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I
ego bono animo sim cognitis quae circa also may be of good comfort, when I
vos sunt know your state.
2:20 neminem enim habeo tam unianimem 20. For I have no man likeminded, who
qui sincera affectione pro vobis will naturally care for your state.
sollicitus sit
2:21 omnes enim sua quaerunt non quae 21. For all seek their own, not the
sunt Christi Iesu things which are Jesus Christ's.
2:22 experimentum autem eius 22. But ye know the proof of him,
cognoscite quoniam sicut patri filius that, as a son with the father, he hath
mecum servivit in evangelium served with me in the gospel.
2:23 hunc igitur spero me mittere mox 23. Him therefore I hope to send
ut videro quae circa me sunt presently, so soon as I shall see how
it will go with me.
2:24 confido autem in Domino quoniam 24. But I trust in the Lord that I
et ipse veniam ad vos cito also myself shall come shortly.
2:25 necessarium autem existimavi 25. Yet I supposed it necessary to
Epafroditum fratrem et cooperatorem et send to you Epaphroditus, my brother,
commilitonem meum vestrum autem and companion in labour, and
apostolum et ministrum necessitatis fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and
meae mittere ad vos he that ministered to my wants.
2:26 quoniam quidem omnes vos 26. For he longed after you all, and
desiderabat et maestus erat propterea was full of heaviness, because that ye
quod audieratis illum infirmatum had heard that he had been sick.
2:27 nam et infirmatus est usque ad 27. For indeed he was sick nigh unto
mortem sed Deus misertus est eius non death: but God had mercy on him; and
solum autem eius verum etiam et mei ne not on him only, but on me also, lest I
tristitiam super tristitiam haberem should have sorrow upon sorrow.
2:28 festinantius ergo misi illum ut 28. I sent him therefore the more
viso eo iterum gaudeatis et ego sine carefully, that, when ye see him again,
tristitia sim ye may rejoice, and that I may be the
less sorrowful.
2:29 excipite itaque illum cum omni 29. Receive him therefore in the Lord
gaudio in Domino et eiusmodi cum honore with all gladness; and hold such in
habetote reputation:
2:30 quoniam propter opus Christi 30. Because for the work of Christ he
usque ad mortem accessit tradens animam was nigh unto death, not regarding his
suam ut impleret id quod ex vobis life, to supply your lack of service
deerat erga meum obsequium toward me.
