3:1  similiter mulieres subditae suis        1.  Likewise, ye wives, be in
viris ut et si qui non credunt verbo         subjection to your own husbands; that,
per mulierum conversationem sine verbo       if any obey not the word, they also may
lucri fiant                                  without the word be won by the
                                             conversation of the wives;

3:2  considerantes in timore castam          2.  While they behold your chaste
conversationem vestram                       conversation coupled with fear.

3:3  quarum sit non extrinsecus              3.  Whose adorning let it not be that
capillaturae aut circumdatio auri aut        outward adorning of plaiting the hair,
indumenti vestimentorum cultus               and of wearing of gold, or of putting
                                             on of apparel;

3:4  sed qui absconditus cordis est          4.  But let it be the hidden man of the
homo in incorruptibilitate quieti et         heart, in that which is not
modesti spiritus quod est in conspectu       corruptible, even the ornament of a
Dei locuples                                 meek and quiet spirit, which is in the
                                             sight of God of great price.

3:5  sic enim aliquando et sanctae           5.  For after this manner in the old
mulieres sperantes in Deo ornabant se        time the holy women also, who trusted
subiectae propriis viris                     in God, adorned themselves, being in
                                             subjection unto their own husbands:

3:6  sicut Sarra oboediebat Abrahae          6.  Even as Sara obeyed Abraham,
dominum eum vocans cuius estis filiae        calling him lord: whose daughters ye
benefacientes et non timentes ullam          are, as long as ye do well, and are not
perturbationem                               afraid with any amazement.

3:7  viri similiter cohabitantes             7.  Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with
secundum scientiam quasi infirmiori          them according to knowledge, giving
vaso muliebri inpertientes honorem           honour unto the wife, as unto the
tamquam et coheredibus gratiae vitae         weaker vessel, and as being heirs
uti ne inpediantur orationes vestrae         together of the grace of life; that
                                             your prayers be not hindered.

3:8  in fine autem omnes unianimes           8.  Finally, be ye all of one mind,
conpatientes fraternitatis amatores          having compassion one of another, love
misericordes humiles                         as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

3:9  non reddentes malum pro malo vel        9.  Not rendering evil for evil, or
maledictum pro maledicto sed e               railing for railing: but contrariwise
contrario benedicentes quia in hoc           blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto
vocati estis ut benedictionem                called, that ye should inherit a
hereditate possideatis                       blessing.

3:10  qui enim vult vitam diligere et        10.  For he that will love life, and
videre dies bonos coerceat linguam suam      see good days, let him refrain his
a malo et labia eius ne loquantur dolum      tongue from evil, and his lips that
                                             they speak no guile:

3:11  declinet autem a malo et faciat        11.  Let him eschew evil, and do good;
bonum inquirat pacem et persequatur eam      let him seek peace, and ensue it.

3:12  quia oculi Domini super iustos et      12.  For the eyes of the Lord are over
aures eius in preces eorum vultus autem      the righteous, and his ears are open
Domini super facientes mala                  unto their prayers: but the face of the
                                             Lord is against them that do evil.

3:13  et quis est qui vobis noceat si        13.  And who is he that will harm you,
boni aemulatores fueritis                    if ye be followers of that which is
                                             good?

3:14  sed et si quid patimini propter        14.  But and if ye suffer for
iustitiam beati timorem autem eorum ne       righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and
timueritis et non conturbemini               be not afraid of their terror, neither
                                             be troubled;

3:15  Dominum autem Christum                 15.  But sanctify the Lord God in your
sanctificate in cordibus vestris parati      hearts: and be ready always to give an
semper ad satisfactionem omni poscenti       answer to every man that asketh you a
vos rationem de ea quae in vobis est spe     reason of the hope that is in you with
                                             meekness and fear:

3:16  sed cum modestia et timore             16.  Having a good conscience; that,
conscientiam habentes bonam ut in eo         whereas they speak evil of you, as of
quod detrahunt vobis confundantur qui        evildoers, they may be ashamed that
calumniantur vestram bonam in Christo        falsely accuse your good conversation
conversationem                               in Christ.

3:17  melius est enim benefacientes si       17.  For it is better, if the will of
velit voluntas Dei pati quam                 God be so, that ye suffer for well
malefacientes                                doing, than for evil doing.

3:18  quia et Christus semel pro             18.  For Christ also hath once suffered
peccatis mortuus est iustus pro              for sins, the just for the unjust, that
iniustis ut nos offerret Deo                 he might bring us to God, being put to
mortificatus carne vivificatus autem         death in the flesh, but quickened by
spiritu                                      the Spirit:

3:19  in quo et his qui in carcere           19.  By which also he went and preached
erant spiritibus veniens praedicavit         unto the spirits in prison;

3:20  qui increduli fuerant aliquando        20.  Which sometime were disobedient,
quando expectabat Dei patientia in           when once the longsuffering of God

3:21  quod et vos nunc similis formae        21.  The like figure whereunto even

3:22  qui est in dextera Dei profectus       22.  Who is gone into heaven, and is on
in caelum subiectis sibi angelis et          the right hand of God; angels and
potestatibus et virtutibus                   authorities and powers being made
                                             subject unto him.
