3:1  fidelis sermo si quis episcopatum       1.  This is a true saying, If a man
desiderat bonum opus desiderat               desire the office of a bishop, he
                                             desireth a good work.

3:2  oportet ergo episcopum                  2.  A bishop then must be blameless,
inreprehensibilem esse unius uxoris          the husband of one wife, vigilant,
virum sobrium prudentem ornatum              sober, of good behaviour, given to
hospitalem doctorem                          hospitality, apt to teach;

3:3  non vinolentum non percussorem sed      3.  Not given to wine, no striker, not
modestum non litigiosum non cupidum          greedy of filthy lucre; but patient,
                                             not a brawler, not covetous;

3:4  suae domui bene praepositum filios      4.  One that ruleth well his own house,
habentem subditos cum omni castitate         having his children in subjection with
                                             all gravity;

3:5  si quis autem domui suae praeesse       5.  (For if a man know not how to rule
nescit quomodo ecclesiae Dei                 his own house, how shall he take care
diligentiam habebit                          of the church of God?)

3:6  non neophytum ne in superbia            6.  Not a novice, lest being lifted up
elatus in iudicium incidat diaboli           with pride he fall into the
                                             condemnation of the devil.

3:7  oportet autem illum et testimonium      7.  Moreover he must have a good report
habere bonum ab his qui foris sunt ut        of them which are without; lest he fall
non in obprobrium incidat et laqueum         into reproach and the snare of the
diaboli                                      devil.

3:8  diaconos similiter pudicos non          8.  Likewise must the deacons be grave,
bilingues non multo vino deditos non         not doubletongued, not given to much
turpe lucrum sectantes                       wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

3:9  habentes mysterium fidei in             9.  Holding the mystery of the faith in
conscientia pura                             a pure conscience.

3:10  et hii autem probentur primum et       10.  And let these also first be
sic ministrent nullum crimen habentes        proved; then let them use the office of
                                             a deacon, being found blameless.

3:11  mulieres similiter pudicas non         11.  Even so must their wives be grave,
detrahentes sobrias fideles in omnibus       not slanderers, sober, faithful in all
                                             things.

3:12  diacones sint unius uxoris viri        12.  Let the deacons be the husbands of
qui filiis suis bene praesunt et suis        one wife, ruling their children and
domibus                                      their own houses well.

3:13  qui enim bene ministraverint           13.  For they that have used the office
gradum sibi bonum adquirent et multam        of a deacon well purchase to themselves
fiduciam in fide quae est in Christo         a good degree, and great boldness in
Iesu                                         the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

3:14  haec tibi scribo sperans venire        14.  These things write I unto thee,
ad te cito                                   hoping to come unto thee shortly:

3:15  si autem tardavero ut scias            15.  But if I tarry long, that thou
quomodo oporteat te in domo Dei              mayest know how thou oughtest to behave
conversari quae est ecclesia Dei vivi        thyself in the house of God, which is
columna et firmamentum veritatis             the church of the living God, the
                                             pillar and ground of the truth.

3:16  et manifeste magnum est pietatis       16.  And without controversy great is
sacramentum quod manifestatum est in         the mystery of godliness: God was
carne iustificatum est in spiritu            manifest in the flesh, justified in the
apparuit angelis praedicatum est             Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto
gentibus creditum est in mundo               the Gentiles, believed on in the world,
adsumptum est in gloria                      received up into glory.
