5:1 seniorem ne increpaveris sed 1. Rebuke not an elder, but intreat
obsecra ut patrem iuvenes ut fratres him as a father; and the younger men as
                                             brethren;

5:2 anus ut matres iuvenculas ut 2. The elder women as mothers; the
sorores in omni castitate younger as sisters, with all purity.

5:3 viduas honora quae vere viduae sunt 3. Honour widows that are widows
                                             indeed.

5:4 si qua autem vidua filios aut 4. But if any widow have children or
nepotes habet discant primum domum suam nephews, let them learn first to shew
regere et mutuam vicem reddere piety at home, and to requite their
parentibus hoc enim acceptum est coram parents: for that is good and
Deo                                          acceptable before God.

5:5 quae autem vere vidua est et 5. Now she that is a widow indeed, and
desolata speravit in Deum et instat desolate, trusteth in God, and
obsecrationibus et orationibus nocte ac continueth in supplications and prayers
die                                          night and day.

5:6 nam quae in deliciis est vivens 6. But she that liveth in pleasure is
mortua est dead while she liveth.

5:7 et hoc praecipe ut 7. And these things give in charge,
inreprehensibiles sint that they may be blameless.

5:8 si quis autem suorum et maxime 8. But if any provide not for his own,
domesticorum curam non habet fidem and specially for those of his own
negavit et est infideli deterior house, he hath denied the faith, and is
                                             worse than an infidel.

5:9 vidua eligatur non minus sexaginta 9. Let not a widow be taken into the
annorum quae fuerit unius viri uxor number under threescore years old,
                                             having been the wife of one man.

5:10  in operibus bonis testimonium          10.  Well reported of for good works;
habens si filios educavit si hospitio if she have brought up children, if she
recepit si sanctorum pedes lavit si have lodged strangers, if she have
tribulationem patientibus washed the saints' feet, if she have
subministravit si omne opus bonum relieved the afflicted, if she have
subsecuta est diligently followed every good work.

5:11 adulescentiores autem viduas 11. But the younger widows refuse: for
devita cum enim luxuriatae fuerint in when they have begun to wax wanton
Christo nubere volunt                        against Christ, they will marry;

5:12 habentes damnationem quia primam 12. Having damnation, because they
fidem irritam fecerunt have cast off their first faith.

5:13 simul autem et otiosae discunt 13. And withal they learn to be idle,
circumire domos non solum otiosae sed        wandering about from house to house;
et verbosae et curiosae loquentes quae and not only idle, but tattlers also
non oportet and busybodies, speaking things which
                                             they ought not.

5:14 volo ergo iuveniores nubere 14. I will therefore that the younger
filios procreare matres familias esse women marry, bear children, guide the
nullam occasionem dare adversario house, give none occasion to the
maledicti gratia adversary to speak reproachfully.

5:15 iam enim quaedam conversae sunt 15. For some are already turned aside
retro Satanan                                after Satan.

5:16 si qua fidelis habet viduas 16. If any man or woman that believeth
subministret illis et non gravetur have widows, let them relieve them, and
ecclesia ut his quae vere viduae sunt let not the church be charged; that it
sufficiat may relieve them that are widows indeed.

5:17 qui bene praesunt presbyteri 17. Let the elders that rule well be
duplici honore digni habeantur maxime counted worthy of double honour,
qui laborant in verbo et doctrina especially they who labour in the word
                                             and doctrine.

5:18 dicit enim scriptura non 18. For the scripture saith, Thou
infrenabis os bovi trituranti et dignus shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth
operarius mercede sua out the corn. And, The labourer is
                                             worthy of his reward.

5:19 adversus presbyterum accusationem 19. Against an elder receive not an
noli recipere nisi sub duobus et tribus accusation, but before two or three
testibus                                     witnesses.

5:20 peccantes coram omnibus argue ut 20. Them that sin rebuke before all,
et ceteri timorem habeant that others also may fear.

5:21 testor coram Deo et Christo Iesu 21. I charge thee before God, and the
et electis angelis ut haec custodias Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect
sine praeiudicio nihil faciens in aliam angels, that thou observe these things
partem declinando without preferring one before another,
                                             doing nothing by partiality.

5:22 manus cito nemini inposueris 22. Lay hands suddenly on no man,
neque communicaveris peccatis alienis neither be partaker of other men's
te ipsum castum custodi sins: keep thyself pure.

5:23 noli adhuc aquam bibere sed vino 23. Drink no longer water, but use a
modico utere propter stomachum tuum et little wine for thy stomach's sake and
frequentes tuas infirmitates thine often infirmities.

5:24 quorundam hominum peccata 24. Some men's sins are open
manifesta sunt praecedentia ad iudicium      beforehand, going before to judgment;
quosdam autem et subsequuntur and some men they follow after.

5:25 similiter et facta bona manifesta 25. Likewise also the good works of
sunt et quae aliter se habent abscondi some are manifest beforehand; and they
non possunt that are otherwise cannot be hid.
