4:1 dico autem quanto tempore heres 1. Now I say, That the heir, as long
parvulus est nihil differt servo cum as he is a child, differeth nothing
sit dominus omnium from a servant, though he be lord of
all;
4:2 sed sub tutoribus est et actoribus 2. But is under tutors and governors
usque ad praefinitum tempus a patre until the time appointed of the father.
4:3 ita et nos cum essemus parvuli sub 3. Even so we, when we were children,
elementis mundi eramus servientes were in bondage under the elements of
the world:
4:4 at ubi venit plenitudo temporis 4. But when the fulness of the time
misit Deus Filium suum factum ex was come, God sent forth his Son, made
muliere factum sub lege of a woman, made under the law,
4:5 ut eos qui sub lege erant 5. To redeem them that were under the
redimeret ut adoptionem filiorum law, that we might receive the adoption
reciperemus of sons.
4:6 quoniam autem estis filii misit 6. And because ye are sons, God hath
Deus Spiritum Filii sui in corda nostra sent forth the Spirit of his Son into
clamantem Abba Pater your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
4:7 itaque iam non es servus sed 7. Wherefore thou art no more a
filius quod si filius et heres per Deum servant, but a son; and if a son, then
an heir of God through Christ.
4:8 sed tunc quidem ignorantes Deum 8. Howbeit then, when ye knew not God,
his qui natura non sunt dii serviebatis ye did service unto them which by
nature are no gods.
4:9 nunc autem cum cognoveritis Deum 9. But now, after that ye have known
immo cogniti sitis a Deo quomodo God, or rather are known of God, how
convertimini iterum ad infirma et egena turn ye again to the weak and beggarly
elementa quibus denuo servire vultis elements, whereunto ye desire again to
be in bondage?
4:10 dies observatis et menses et 10. Ye observe days, and months, and
tempora et annos times, and years.
4:11 timeo vos ne forte sine causa 11. I am afraid of you, lest I have
laboraverim in vobis bestowed upon you labour in vain.
4:12 estote sicut et ego quia et ego 12. Brethren, I beseech you, be as I
sicut vos fratres obsecro vos nihil me am; for I am as ye are: ye have not
laesistis injured me at all.
4:13 scitis autem quia per 13. Ye know how through infirmity of
infirmitatem carnis evangelizavi vobis the flesh I preached the gospel unto
iam pridem you at the first.
4:14 et temptationem vestram in carne 14. And my temptation which was in my
mea non sprevistis neque respuistis sed flesh ye despised not, nor rejected;
sicut angelum Dei excepistis me sicut but received me as an angel of God,
Christum Iesum even as Christ Jesus.
4:15 ubi est ergo beatitudo vestra 15. Where is then the blessedness ye
testimonium enim perhibeo vobis quia si spake of? for I bear you record, that,
fieri posset oculos vestros eruissetis if it had been possible, ye would have
et dedissetis mihi plucked out your own eyes, and have
given them to me.
4:16 ergo inimicus vobis factus sum 16. Am I therefore become your enemy,
verum dicens vobis because I tell you the truth?
4:17 aemulantur vos non bene sed 17. They zealously affect you, but not
excludere vos volunt ut illos aemulemini well; yea, they would exclude you, that
ye might affect them.
4:18 bonum autem aemulamini in bono 18. But it is good to be zealously
semper et non tantum cum praesens sum affected always in a good thing, and
apud vos not only when I am present with you.
4:19 filioli mei quos iterum parturio 19. My little children, of whom I
donec formetur Christus in vobis travail in birth again until Christ be
formed in you,
4:20 vellem autem esse apud vos modo 20. I desire to be present with you
et mutare vocem meam quoniam confundor now, and to change my voice; for I
in vobis stand in doubt of you.
4:21 dicite mihi qui sub lege vultis 21. Tell me, ye that desire to be
esse legem non legistis under the law, do ye not hear the law?
4:22 scriptum est enim quoniam Abraham 22. For it is written, that Abraham
duos filios habuit unum de ancilla et had two sons, the one by a bondmaid,
unum de libera the other by a freewoman.
4:23 sed qui de ancilla secundum 23. But he who was of the bondwoman
carnem natus est qui autem de libera was born after the flesh; but he of the
per repromissionem freewoman was by promise.
4:24 quae sunt per allegoriam dicta 24. Which things are an allegory: for
haec enim sunt duo testamenta unum these are the two covenants; the one
quidem a monte Sina in servitutem from the mount Sinai, which gendereth
generans quae est Agar to bondage, which is Agar.
4:25 Sina enim mons est in Arabia qui 25. For this Agar is mount Sinai in
coniunctus est ei quae nunc est Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem
Hierusalem et servit cum filiis eius which now is, and is in bondage with
her children.
4:26 illa autem quae sursum est 26. But Jerusalem which is above is
Hierusalem libera est quae est mater free, which is the mother of us all.
nostra
4:27 scriptum est enim laetare 27. For it is written, Rejoice, thou
sterilis quae non paris erumpe et barren that bearest not; break forth
exclama quae non parturis quia multi and cry, thou that travailest not: for
filii desertae magis quam eius quae the desolate hath many more children
habet virum than she which hath an husband.
4:28 nos autem fratres secundum Isaac 28. Now we, brethren, as Isaac was,
promissionis filii sumus are the children of promise.
4:29 sed quomodo tunc qui secundum 29. But as then he that was born after
carnem natus fuerat persequebatur eum the flesh persecuted him that was born
qui secundum spiritum ita et nunc after the Spirit, even so it is now.
4:30 sed quid dicit scriptura eice 30. Nevertheless what saith the
ancillam et filium eius non enim heres scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and
erit filius ancillae cum filio liberae her son: for the son of the bondwoman
shall not be heir with the son of the
freewoman.
4:31 itaque fratres non sumus ancillae 31. So then, brethren, we are not
filii sed liberae qua libertate nos children of the bondwoman, but of the
Christus liberavit free.
