5:1 state et nolite iterum iugo 1. Stand fast therefore in the liberty
servitutis contineri wherewith Christ hath made us free, and
be not entangled again with the yoke of
bondage.
5:2 ecce ego Paulus dico vobis quoniam 2. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that
si circumcidamini Christus vobis nihil if ye be circumcised, Christ shall
proderit profit you nothing.
5:3 testificor autem rursum omni 3. For I testify again to every man
homini circumcidenti se quoniam debitor that is circumcised, that he is a
est universae legis faciendae debtor to do the whole law.
5:4 evacuati estis a Christo qui in 4. Christ is become of no effect unto
lege iustificamini a gratia excidistis you, whosoever of you are justified by
the law; ye are fallen from grace.
5:5 nos enim spiritu ex fide spem 5. For we through the Spirit wait for
iustitiae expectamus the hope of righteousness by faith.
5:6 nam in Christo Iesu neque 6. For in Jesus Christ neither
circumcisio aliquid valet neque circumcision availeth any thing, nor
praeputium sed fides quae per caritatem uncircumcision; but faith which worketh
operatur by love.
5:7 currebatis bene quis vos inpedivit 7. Ye did run well; who did hinder you
veritati non oboedire that ye should not obey the truth?
5:8 persuasio non est ex eo qui vocat 8. This persuasion cometh not of him
vos that calleth you.
5:9 modicum fermentum totam massam 9. A little leaven leaveneth the whole
corrumpit lump.
5:10 ego confido in vobis in Domino 10. I have confidence in you through
quod nihil aliud sapietis qui autem the Lord, that ye will be none
conturbat vos portabit iudicium otherwise minded: but he that troubleth
quicumque est ille you shall bear his judgment, whosoever
he be.
5:11 ego autem fratres si 11. And I, brethren, if I yet preach
circumcisionem adhuc praedico quid circumcision, why do I yet suffer
adhuc persecutionem patior ergo persecution? then is the offence of the
evacuatum est scandalum crucis cross ceased.
5:12 utinam et abscidantur qui vos 12. I would they were even cut off
conturbant which trouble you.
5:13 vos enim in libertatem vocati 13. For, brethren, ye have been called
estis fratres tantum ne libertatem in unto liberty; only use not liberty for
occasionem detis carnis sed per an occasion to the flesh, but by love
caritatem servite invicem serve one another.
5:14 omnis enim lex in uno sermone 14. For all the law is fulfilled in
impletur diliges proximum tuum sicut te one word, even in this; Thou shalt love
ipsum thy neighbour as thyself.
5:15 quod si invicem mordetis et 15. But if ye bite and devour one
comeditis videte ne ab invicem another, take heed that ye be not
consumamini consumed one of another.
5:16 dico autem spiritu ambulate et 16. This I say then, Walk in the
desiderium carnis non perficietis Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the
lust of the flesh.
5:17 caro enim concupiscit adversus 17. For the flesh lusteth against the
spiritum spiritus autem adversus carnem Spirit, and the Spirit against the
haec enim invicem adversantur ut non flesh: and these are contrary the one
quaecumque vultis illa faciatis to the other: so that ye cannot do the
things that ye would.
5:18 quod si spiritu ducimini non 18. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye
estis sub lege are not under the law.
5:19 manifesta autem sunt opera carnis 19. Now the works of the flesh are
quae sunt fornicatio inmunditia luxuria manifest, which are these; Adultery,
fornication, uncleanness,
lasciviousness,
5:20 idolorum servitus veneficia 20. Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred,
inimicitiae contentiones aemulationes variance, emulations, wrath, strife,
irae rixae dissensiones sectae seditions, heresies,
5:21 invidiae homicidia ebrietates 21. Envyings, murders, drunkenness,
comesationes et his similia quae revellings, and such like: of the which
praedico vobis sicut praedixi quoniam I tell you before, as I have also told
qui talia agunt regnum Dei non you in time past, that they which do
consequentur such things shall not inherit the
kingdom of God.
5:22 fructus autem Spiritus est 22. But the fruit of the Spirit is
caritas gaudium pax longanimitas love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
bonitas benignitas gentleness, goodness, faith,
5:23 fides modestia continentia 23. Meekness, temperance: against such
adversus huiusmodi non est lex there is no law.
5:24 qui autem sunt Christi carnem 24. And they that are Christ's have
crucifixerunt cum vitiis et crucified the flesh with the affections
concupiscentiis and lusts.
5:25 si vivimus spiritu spiritu et 25. If we live in the Spirit, let us
ambulemus also walk in the Spirit.
5:26 non efficiamur inanis gloriae 26. Let us not be desirous of vain
cupidi invicem provocantes invicem glory, provoking one another, envying
invidentes one another.
