2:1 fratres mei nolite in personarum 1. My brethren, have not the faith of
acceptione habere fidem Domini nostri our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of
Iesu Christi gloriae glory, with respect of persons.
2:2 etenim si introierit in conventu 2. For if there come unto your
vestro vir aureum anulum habens in assembly a man with a gold ring, in
veste candida introierit autem et goodly apparel, and there come in also
pauper in sordido habitu a poor man in vile raiment;
2:3 et intendatis in eum qui indutus 3. And ye have respect to him that
est veste praeclara et dixeritis tu weareth the gay clothing, and say unto
sede hic bene pauperi autem dicatis tu him, Sit thou here in a good place; and
sta illic aut sede sub scabillo pedum say to the poor, Stand thou there, or
meorum sit here under my footstool:
2:4 nonne iudicatis apud vosmet ipsos 4. Are ye not then partial in
et facti estis iudices cogitationum yourselves, and are become judges of
iniquarum evil thoughts?
2:5 audite fratres mei dilectissimi 5. Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath
nonne Deus elegit pauperes in hoc mundo not God chosen the poor of this world
divites in fide et heredes regni quod rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom
repromisit Deus diligentibus se which he hath promised to them that
love him?
2:6 vos autem exhonorastis pauperem 6. But ye have despised the poor. Do
nonne divites per potentiam opprimunt not rich men oppress you, and draw you
vos et ipsi trahunt vos ad iudicia before the judgment seats?
2:7 nonne ipsi blasphemant bonum nomen 7. Do not they blaspheme that worthy
quod invocatum est super vos name by the which ye are called?
2:8 si tamen legem perficitis regalem 8. If ye fulfil the royal law
secundum scripturas diliges proximum according to the scripture, Thou shalt
tuum sicut te ipsum bene facitis love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do
well:
2:9 si autem personas accipitis 9. But if ye have respect to persons,
peccatum operamini redarguti a lege ye commit sin, and are convinced of the
quasi transgressores law as transgressors.
2:10 quicumque autem totam legem 10. For whosoever shall keep the whole
servaverit offendat autem in uno factus law, and yet offend in one point, he is
est omnium reus guilty of all.
2:11 qui enim dixit non moechaberis 11. For he that said, Do not commit
dixit et non occides quod si non adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now
moechaberis occides autem factus es if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou
transgressor legis kill, thou art become a transgressor of
the law.
2:12 sic loquimini et sic facite sicut 12. So speak ye, and so do, as they
per legem libertatis incipientes that shall be judged by the law of
iudicari liberty.
2:13 iudicium enim sine misericordia 13. For he shall have judgment without
illi qui non fecit misericordiam mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and
superexultat autem misericordia iudicio mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
2:14 quid proderit fratres mei si 14. What doth it profit, my brethren,
fidem quis dicat se habere opera autem though a man say he hath faith, and
non habeat numquid poterit fides have not works? can faith save him?

2:15 si autem frater aut soror nudi 15. If a brother or sister be naked,
sunt et indigent victu cotidiano and destitute of daily food,
2:16 dicat autem aliquis de vobis 16. And one of you say unto them,
illis ite in pace calefacimini et Depart in peace, be ye warmed and
saturamini non dederitis autem eis quae filled; notwithstanding ye give them
necessaria sunt corporis quid proderit not those things which are needful to
the body; what doth it profit?
2:17 sic et fides si non habeat opera 17. Even so faith, if it hath not
mortua est in semet ipsam works, is dead, being alone.
2:18 sed dicet quis tu fidem habes et 18. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast
ego opera habeo ostende mihi fidem tuam faith, and I have works: shew me thy
sine operibus et ego ostendam tibi ex faith without thy works, and I will
operibus fidem meam shew thee my faith by my works.
2:19 tu credis quoniam unus est Deus 19. Thou believest that there is one
bene facis et daemones credunt et God; thou doest well: the devils also
contremescunt believe, and tremble.
2:20 vis autem scire o homo inanis 20. But wilt thou know, O vain man,
quoniam fides sine operibus otiosa est that faith without works is dead?
2:21 Abraham pater noster nonne ex 21. Was not Abraham our father
operibus iustificatus est offerens justified by works, when he had offered
Isaac filium suum super altare Isaac his son upon the altar?
2:22 vides quoniam fides cooperabatur 22. Seest thou how faith wrought with
operibus illius et ex operibus fides his works, and by works was faith made
consummata est perfect?
2:23 et suppleta est scriptura dicens 23. And the scripture was fulfilled
credidit Abraham Deo et reputatum est which saith, Abraham believed God, and
illi ad iustitiam et amicus Dei it was imputed unto him for
appellatus est righteousness: and he was called the
Friend of God.
2:24 videtis quoniam ex operibus 24. Ye see then how that by works a
iustificatur homo et non ex fide tantum man is justified, and not by faith only.
2:25 similiter autem et Raab meretrix 25. Likewise also was not Rahab the
nonne ex operibus iustificata est harlot justified by works, when she had
suscipiens nuntios et alia via eiciens received the messengers, and had sent
them out another way?
2:26 sicut enim corpus sine spiritu 26. For as the body without the spirit
emortuum est ita et fides sine operibus is dead, so faith without works is dead
mortua est also.
