4:1  unde bella et lites in vobis nonne      1.  From whence come wars and fightings
hinc ex concupiscentiis vestris quae         among you? come they not hence, even of
militant in membris vestris                  your lusts that war in your members?

4:2  concupiscitis et non habetis            2.  Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and
occiditis et zelatis et non potestis         desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye
adipisci litigatis et belligeratis non       fight and war, yet ye have not, because
habetis propter quod non postulatis          ye ask not.

4:3  petitis et non accipitis eo quod        3.  Ye ask, and receive not, because ye
male petatis ut in concupiscentiis           ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon
vestris insumatis                            your lusts.

4:4  adulteri nescitis quia amicitia         4.  Ye adulterers and adulteresses,
huius mundi inimica est Dei quicumque        know ye not that the friendship of the
ergo voluerit amicus esse saeculi huius      world is enmity with God? whosoever
inimicus Dei constituitur                    therefore will be a friend of the world
                                             is the enemy of God.

4:5  aut putatis quia inaniter               5.  Do ye think that the scripture
scriptura dicat ad invidiam concupiscit      saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth
Spiritus qui inhabitat in nobis              in us lusteth to envy?

4:6  maiorem autem dat gratiam propter       6.  But he giveth more grace. Wherefore
quod dicit Deus superbis resistit            he saith, God resisteth the proud, but
humilibus autem dat gratiam                  giveth grace unto the humble.

4:7  subditi igitur estote Deo               7.  Submit yourselves therefore to God.
resistite autem diabolo et fugiet a          Resist the devil, and he will flee from
vobis                                        you.

4:8  adpropiate Domino et                    8.  Draw nigh to God, and he will draw
adpropinquabit vobis emundate manus          nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye
peccatores et purificate corda duplices      sinners; and purify your hearts, ye
animo                                        double minded.

4:9  miseri estote et lugete et plorate      9.  Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep:
risus vester in luctum convertatur et        let your laughter be turned to
gaudium in maerorem                          mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

4:10  humiliamini in conspectu Domini        10.  Humble yourselves in the sight of
et exaltabit vos                             the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

4:11  nolite detrahere de alterutrum         11.  Speak not evil one of another,
fratres qui detrahit fratri aut qui          brethren. He that speaketh evil of his
iudicat fratrem suum detrahit legi et        brother, and judgeth his brother,
iudicat legem si autem iudicas legem         speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth
non es factor legis sed iudex                the law: but if thou judge the law,
                                             thou art not a doer of the law, but a
                                             judge.

4:12  unus est legislator et iudex qui       12.  There is one lawgiver, who is able
potest perdere et liberare tu autem          to save and to destroy: who art thou
quis es qui iudicas proximum                 that judgest another?

4:13  ecce nunc qui dicitis hodie aut        13.  Go to now, ye that say, To day or
crastino ibimus in illam civitatem et        to morrow we will go into such a city,
faciemus quidem ibi annum et mercabimur      and continue there a year, and buy and
et lucrum faciemus                           sell, and get gain:

4:14  qui ignoratis quid erit in             14.  Whereas ye know not what shall be
crastinum quae enim est vita vestra          on the morrow. For what is your life?
vapor est ad modicum parens deinceps         It is even a vapour, that appeareth for

4:15  pro eo ut dicatis si Dominus           15.  For that ye ought to say, If the

vestris omnis exultatio talis maligna        boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

4:17  scienti igitur bonum facere et         17.  Therefore to him that knoweth to
non facienti peccatum est illi               do good, and doeth it not, to him it is
                                             sin.
