4:1  obsecro itaque vos ego vinctus in       1.  I therefore, the prisoner of the
Domino ut digne ambuletis vocatione qua      Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy
vocati estis                                 of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

4:2  cum omni humilitate et                  2.  With all lowliness and meekness,
mansuetudine cum patientia subportantes      with longsuffering, forbearing one
invicem in caritate                          another in love;

4:3  solliciti servare unitatem              3.  Endeavouring to keep the unity of
spiritus in vinculo pacis                    the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4:4  unum corpus et unus spiritus sicut      4.  There is one body, and one Spirit,
vocati estis in una spe vocationis           even as ye are called in one hope of
vestrae                                      your calling;

4:5  unus Dominus una fides unum             5.  One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
baptisma

4:6  unus Deus et Pater omnium qui           6.  One God and Father of all, who is
super omnes et per omnia et in omnibus       above all, and through all, and in you
nobis                                        all.

4:7  unicuique autem nostrum data est        7.  But unto every one of us is given
gratia secundum mensuram donationis          grace according to the measure of the
Christi                                      gift of Christ.

4:8  propter quod dicit ascendens in         8.  Wherefore he saith, When he
altum captivam duxit captivitatem dedit      ascended up on high, he led captivity
dona hominibus                               captive, and gave gifts unto men.

4:9  quod autem ascendit quid est nisi       9.  (Now that he ascended, what is it
quia et descendit primum in inferiores       but that he also descended first into
partes terrae                                the lower parts of the earth?

4:10  qui descendit ipse est et qui          10.  He that descended is the same also
ascendit super omnes caelos ut impleret      that ascended up far above all heavens,
omnia                                        that he might fill all things.)

4:11  et ipse dedit quosdam quidem           11.  And he gave some, apostles; and
apostolos quosdam autem prophetas alios      some, prophets; and some, evangelists;
vero evangelistas alios autem pastores       and some, pastors and teachers;
et doctores

4:12  ad consummationem sanctorum in         12.  For the perfecting of the saints,
opus ministerii in aedificationem            for the work of the ministry, for the
corporis Christi                             edifying of the body of Christ:

4:13  donec occurramus omnes in              13.  Till we all come in the unity of
unitatem fidei et agnitionis Filii Dei       the faith, and of the knowledge of the
in virum perfectum in mensuram aetatis       Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto
plenitudinis Christi                         the measure of the stature of the
                                             fulness of Christ:

4:14  ut iam non simus parvuli               14.  That we henceforth be no more
fluctuantes et circumferamur omni vento      children, tossed to and fro, and
doctrinae in nequitia hominum in             carried about with every wind of
astutia ad circumventionem erroris           doctrine, by the sleight of men, and
                                             cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in
                                             wait to deceive;

4:15  veritatem autem facientes in           15.  But speaking the truth in love,
caritate crescamus in illo per omnia         may grow up into him in all things,
qui est caput Christus                       which is the head, even Christ:

4:16  ex quo totum corpus conpactum et       16.  From whom the whole body fitly
conexum per omnem iuncturam                  joined together and compacted by that
subministrationis secundum operationem       which every joint supplieth, according

augmentum corporis facit in                  of every part, maketh increase of the

4:17  hoc igitur dico et testificor in       17.  This I say therefore, and testify

gentes ambulant in vanitate sensus sui       not as other Gentiles walk, in the
                                             vanity of their mind,

4:18  tenebris obscuratum habentes           18.  Having the understanding darkened,
intellectum alienati a vita Dei per          being alienated from the life of God
ignorantiam quae est in illis propter        through the ignorance that is in them,
caecitatem cordis ipsorum                    because of the blindness of their heart:

4:19  qui desperantes semet ipsos            19.  Who being past feeling have given
tradiderunt inpudicitiae in operationem      themselves over unto lasciviousness, to
inmunditiae omnis in avaritia                work all uncleanness with greediness.

4:20  vos autem non ita didicistis           20.  But ye have not so learned Christ;
Christum

4:21  si tamen illum audistis et in          21.  If so be that ye have heard him,
ipso edocti estis sicut est veritas in       and have been taught by him, as the
Iesu                                         truth is in Jesus:

4:22  deponere vos secundum pristinam        22.  That ye put off concerning the
conversationem veterem hominem qui           former conversation the old man, which
corrumpitur secundum desideria erroris       is corrupt according to the deceitful
                                             lusts;

4:23  renovamini autem spiritu mentis        23.  And be renewed in the spirit of
vestrae                                      your mind;

4:24  et induite novum hominem qui           24.  And that ye put on the new man,
secundum Deum creatus est in iustitia        which after God is created in
et sanctitate veritatis                      righteousness and true holiness.

4:25  propter quod deponentes mendacium      25.  Wherefore putting away lying,
loquimini veritatem unusquisque cum          speak every man truth with his
proximo suo quoniam sumus invicem membra     neighbour: for we are members one of
                                             another.

4:26  irascimini et nolite peccare sol       26.  Be ye angry, and sin not: let not
non occidat super iracundiam vestram         the sun go down upon your wrath:

4:27  nolite locum dare diabolo              27.  Neither give place to the devil.

4:28  qui furabatur iam non furetur          28.  Let him that stole steal no more:
magis autem laboret operando manibus         but rather let him labour, working with
quod bonum est ut habeat unde tribuat        his hands the thing which is good, that
necessitatem patienti                        he may have to give to him that needeth.

4:29  omnis sermo malus ex ore vestro        29.  Let no corrupt communication
non procedat sed si quis bonus ad            proceed out of your mouth, but that
aedificationem oportunitatis ut det          which is good to the use of edifying,
gratiam audientibus                          that it may minister grace unto the
                                             hearers.

4:30  et nolite contristare Spiritum         30.  And grieve not the holy Spirit of
Sanctum Dei in quo signati estis in die      God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day
redemptionis                                 of redemption.

4:31  omnis amaritudo et ira et              31.  Let all bitterness, and wrath, and
indignatio et clamor et blasphemia           anger, and clamour, and evil speaking,
tollatur a vobis cum omni malitia            be put away from you, with all malice:

4:32  estote autem invicem benigni           32.  And be ye kind one to another,
misericordes donantes invicem sicut et       tenderhearted, forgiving one another,
Deus in Christo donavit nobis                even as God for Christ's sake hath
                                             forgiven you.
