                  1844. Letter from J. H. Cartmel of Rush co.  Ind., tells of 
                  the death of his father. "He left home about the 9th of 
                  August, in good health and fine spirits for Kentucky, which 
                  place he reached about the 4th day. He attended a few 
                  meetings, visited a few of the friends and relatives in that 
                  country, and on the 1st day of September, he was taken ill 
                  after he rose in the morning." He died at home of George 
                  McDaniel in Harrison county, a nephew, in his 77th year of 
                  age.  J. H. Cartmel wrote that he and one of his brothers did
                  not receive the letter which had been written about the 
                  illness of their father  until the day before his death.

                  letter from  Creath: "I am now in my native state, Va., and 
                  under the roof of my youngest sister, who has been a widow 
                  since  May last, and also under the roof of my ...mother, who
                  has been a widow for the last twenty-two years...the two live
                  together. My sister is left with one child, an infant." 
                  He had not seen his mother for more than 16 years. She was 
                  born in Granville county, North Carolina, Feb. 18, 1778, and 
                  was raised in Mecklenburg county, Va. where she lived until 
                  about three years ago, when she went to live with her 
                  youngest daughter. She was married to my father William 
                  Creath on 14 June 1791, age 13. She was baptized by her 
                  husband in 1802. She had 16 children, 9 sons and 7 daughters,
                  8 are still living and 5 of the 8 are preachers--4 are 
                  Baptist preachers and one is Jacob."She is a woman of prayer 
                  and piety and remains a member of a Missionary Baptist church.
                  " [This next paragraph is difficult to read but appears to say
                  that the Baptists who belong to the Teay Valley Association 
                  has asked Jacob to attend their conference.] "On my way here 
                  I was greatly annoyed on the steamboat  with cursing, 
                  gambling, drinking and cigar-smoking. Truly we are a christian
                  nation!" Creath, Susan, wife of Jacob Creath, jr., died at 
                  her home in Monticello, Lewis co., Missouri, July 16, 1841, of
                  pulmonary and heriditary consumption, age 32. She suffered 
                  greatly from  the disease for more than three years.
