McHatton, Capt. John, He was born in Penn. 1739, died a short time ago [June
1831 issue], had served in Revolutionary War. When he was age
16, war broke out between France and England. the French had
settled Quebec at the same time the English had settled at
Jamestown in Virginia. The French discovered the valley of
the Mississippi and made settlements from Fort du Quesne
(Pittsburg) to Orleans, and were establishing posts to secure
all the country west of the Alleghany mountains. This country
was claimed by the British. When negotiation failed, war was
declared. Young McHatton offered his services to Gen. Braddock
and marched through the hostile Indians to "the disastrous
scenes near Fort Du Quesne." After Braddock's death, he served
under Generals Stanwick, Forbes, Monkton and Bouquett, and
served until peace was concluded between France and Britain.
When war was declared against England in 1776, McHatton was
appointed a Captain of a volunteer company in Pennsylvania and
soon after Captain of a Flying Camp in Col. Watt's regiment.
On the 17th Nov. 1776, McHatton was sent to Fort Washington on
the Hudson for its defence under Col. Magaw. When the fort was
forced to surrender to Sir William Howe, McHatton was one of
the prisoners. They were taken to the prison ship Jersey off
Long Island. Finally, after an absence of four years and eight
months, McHatton returned to his family. He afterwards served
under Washington and Lafayette. When the war ended, he
emigrated to Kentucky in 1784. There he fought the Indians. A
short time ago he was attacked with a cancer, dying at age 92.
"He walked erect and with remarkable ease till a few months
before his death."
