11:1  est autem fides sperandorum            1.  Now faith is the substance of
substantia rerum argumentum non parentum     things hoped for, the evidence of
                                             things not seen.

11:2  in hac enim testimonium consecuti      2.  For by it the elders obtained a
sunt senes                                   good report.

11:3  fide intellegimus aptata esse          3.  Through faith we understand that
saecula verbo Dei ut ex invisibilibus        the worlds were framed by the word of
visibilia fierent                            God, so that things which are seen were
                                             not made of things which do appear.

11:4  fide plurimam hostiam Abel quam        4.  By faith Abel offered unto God a
Cain obtulit Deo per quam testimonium        more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by
consecutus est esse iustus testimonium       which he obtained witness that he was
perhibente muneribus eius Deo et per         righteous, God testifying of his gifts:
illam defunctus adhuc loquitur               and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

11:5  fide Enoch translatus est ne           5.  By faith Enoch was translated that
videret mortem et non inveniebatur quia      he should not see death; and was not
transtulit illum Deus ante                   found, because God had translated him:
translationem enim testimonium habebat       for before his translation he had this
placuisse Deo                                testimony, that he pleased God.

11:6  sine fide autem inpossibile            6.  But without faith it is impossible
placere credere enim oportet accedentem      to please him: for he that cometh to
ad Deum quia est et inquirentibus se         God must believe that he is, and that
remunerator fit                              he is a rewarder of them that
                                             diligently seek him.

11:7  fide Noe responso accepto de his       7.  By faith Noah, being warned of God
quae adhuc non videbantur metuens            of things not seen as yet, moved with
aptavit arcam in salutem domus suae per      fear, prepared an ark to the saving of
quam damnavit mundum et iustitiae quae       his house; by the which he condemned
per fidem est heres est institutus           the world, and became heir of the
                                             righteousness which is by faith.

11:8  fide qui vocatur Abraham               8.  By faith Abraham, when he was
oboedivit in locum exire quem                called to go out into a place which he
accepturus erat in hereditatem et exiit      should after receive for an

                                             not knowing whither he went.

11:9  fide moratus est in terra              9.  By faith he sojourned in the land

coheredibus repromissionis eiusdem           Jacob, the heirs with him of the same
                                             promise:

11:10  expectabat enim fundamenta            10.  For he looked for a city which
habentem civitatem cuius artifex et          hath foundations, whose builder and
conditor Deus                                maker is God.

11:11  fide et ipsa Sarra sterilis           11.  Through faith also Sara herself
virtutem in conceptionem seminis             received strength to conceive seed, and
accepit etiam praeter tempus aetatis         was delivered of a child when she was
quoniam fidelem credidit esse qui            past age, because she judged him
promiserat                                   faithful who had promised.

11:12  propter quod et ab uno orti sunt      12.  Therefore sprang there even of
et haec emortuo tamquam sidera caeli in      one, and him as good as dead, so many
multitudinem et sicut harena quae est        as the stars of the sky in multitude,
ad oram maris innumerabilis                  and as the sand which is by the sea
                                             shore innumerable.

11:13  iuxta fidem defuncti sunt omnes       13.  These all died in faith, not
isti non acceptis repromissionibus sed       having received the promises, but
a longe eas aspicientes et salutantes        having seen them afar off, and were
et confitentes quia peregrini et             persuaded of them, and embraced them,
hospites sunt supra terram                   and confessed that they were strangers
                                             and pilgrims on the earth.

11:14  qui enim haec dicunt significant      14.  For they that say such things
se patriam inquirere                         declare plainly that they seek a
                                             country.

11:15  et si quidem illius meminissent       15.  And truly, if they had been
de qua exierunt habebant utique tempus       mindful of that country from whence
revertendi                                   they came out, they might have had
                                             opportunity to have returned.

11:16  nunc autem meliorem appetunt id       16.  But now they desire a better
est caelestem ideo non confunditur Deus      country, that is, an heavenly:
vocari Deus eorum paravit enim illis         wherefore God is not ashamed to be
civitatem                                    called their God: for he hath prepared
                                             for them a city.

11:17  fide obtulit Abraham Isaac cum        17.  By faith Abraham, when he was
temptaretur et unigenitum offerebat qui      tried, offered up Isaac: and he that
susceperat repromissiones                    had received the promises offered up
                                             his only begotten son,

11:18  ad quem dictum est quia in Isaac      18.  Of whom it was said, That in Isaac
vocabitur tibi semen                         shall thy seed be called:

11:19  arbitrans quia et a mortuis           19.  Accounting that God was able to
suscitare potens est Deus unde eum et        raise him up, even from the dead; from
in parabola accepit                          whence also he received him in a figure.

11:20  fide et de futuris benedixit          20.  By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and
Isaac Iacob et Esau                          Esau concerning things to come.

11:21  fide Iacob moriens singulis           21.  By faith Jacob, when he was a
filiorum Ioseph benedixit et adoravit        dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph;
fastigium virgae eius                        and worshipped, leaning upon the top of
                                             his staff.

11:22  fide Ioseph moriens de                22.  By faith Joseph, when he died,

11:25  magis eligens adfligi cum populo      25.  Choosing rather to suffer

iucunditatem                                 to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a
                                             season;

11:26  maiores divitias aestimans            26.  Esteeming the reproach of Christ
thesauro Aegyptiorum inproperium             greater riches than the treasures in
Christi aspiciebat enim in                   Egypt: for he had respect unto the
remunerationem                               recompence of the reward.

11:27  fide reliquit Aegyptum non            27.  By faith he forsook Egypt, not
veritus animositatem regis invisibilem       fearing the wrath of the king: for he
enim tamquam videns sustinuit                endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

11:28  fide celebravit pascha et             28.  Through faith he kept the
sanguinis effusionem ne qui vastabat         passover, and the sprinkling of blood,
primitiva tangeret eos                       lest he that destroyed the firstborn
                                             should touch them.

11:29  fide transierunt mare Rubrum          29.  By faith they passed through the
tamquam per aridam terram quod experti       Red sea as by dry land: which the
Aegyptii devorati sunt                       Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.

11:30  fide muri Hiericho ruerunt            30.  By faith the walls of Jericho fell
circuiti dierum septem                       down, after they were compassed about
                                             seven days.

11:31  fide Raab meretrix non periit         31.  By faith the harlot Rahab perished
cum incredulis excipiens exploratores        not with them that believed not, when
cum pace                                     she had received the spies with peace.

11:32  et quid adhuc dicam deficiet          32.  And what shall I more say? for the
enim me tempus enarrantem de Gedeon          time would fail me to tell of Gedeon,
Barac Samson Iepthae David et Samuhel        and of Barak, and of Samson, and of
et prophetis                                 Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel,
                                             and of the prophets:

11:33  qui per fidem devicerunt regna        33.  Who through faith subdued
operati sunt iustitiam adepti sunt           kingdoms, wrought righteousness,
repromissiones obturaverunt ora leonum       obtained promises, stopped the mouths
                                             of lions.

11:34  extinxerunt impetum ignis             34.  Quenched the violence of fire,
effugerunt aciem gladii convaluerunt de      escaped the edge of the sword, out of
infirmitate fortes facti sunt in bello       weakness were made strong, waxed
castra verterunt exterorum                   valiant in fight, turned to flight the
                                             armies of the aliens.

11:35  acceperunt mulieres de                35.  Women received their dead raised
resurrectione mortuos suos alii autem        to life again: and others were
distenti sunt non suscipientes               tortured, not accepting deliverance;
redemptionem ut meliorem invenirent          that they might obtain a better
resurrectionem                               resurrection:

11:36  alii vero ludibria et verbera         36.  And others had trial of cruel
experti insuper et vincula et carceres       mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover
                                             of bonds and imprisonment:

11:37  lapidati sunt secti sunt              37.  They were stoned, they were sawn
temptati sunt in occisione gladii            asunder, were tempted, were slain with
mortui sunt circumierunt in melotis in       the sword: they wandered about in
pellibus caprinis egentes angustiati         sheepskins and goatskins; being
adflicti                                     destitute, afflicted, tormented;

11:38  quibus dignus non erat mundus in      38.  (Of whom the world was not
solitudinibus errantes et montibus et        worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and
speluncis et in cavernis terrae              in mountains, and in dens and caves of
                                             the earth.

11:39  et hii omnes testimonio fidei         39.  And these all, having obtained a
probati non acceperunt repromissionem        good report through faith, received not
                                             the promise:

11:40  Deo pro nobis melius aliquid          40.  God having provided some better
providente ut ne sine nobis                  thing for us, that they without us
consummarentur                               should not be made perfect.
