12:1  ideoque et nos tantam habentes         1.  Wherefore seeing we also are
inpositam nubem testium deponentes omne      compassed about with so great a cloud
pondus et circumstans nos peccatum per       of witnesses, let us lay aside every
patientiam curramus propositum nobis         weight, and the sin which doth so
certamen                                     easily beset us, and let us run with
                                             patience the race that is set before us,

12:2  aspicientes in auctorem fidei et       2.  Looking unto Jesus the author and
consummatorem Iesum qui pro proposito        finisher of our faith; who for the joy
sibi gaudio sustinuit crucem confusione      that was set before him endured the
contempta atque in dextera sedis Dei         cross, despising the shame, and is set
sedit                                        down at the right hand of the throne of
                                             God.

12:3  recogitate enim eum qui talem          3.  For consider him that endured such
sustinuit a peccatoribus adversum semet      contradiction of sinners against
ipsos contradictionem ut ne fatigemini       himself, lest ye be wearied and faint
animis vestris deficientes                   in your minds.

12:4  nondum usque ad sanguinem              4.  Ye have not yet resisted unto
restitistis adversus peccatum                blood, striving against sin.
repugnantes

12:5  et obliti estis consolationis          5.  And ye have forgotten the
quae vobis tamquam filiis loquitur           exhortation which speaketh unto you as
dicens fili mi noli neglegere                unto children, My son, despise not thou
disciplinam Domini neque fatigeris dum       the chastening of the Lord, nor faint
ab eo argueris                               when thou art rebuked of him:

12:6  quem enim diligit Dominus              6.  For whom the Lord loveth he
castigat flagellat autem omnem filium        chasteneth, and scourgeth every son
quem recipit                                 whom he receiveth.

12:7  in disciplina perseverate tamquam      7.  If ye endure chastening, God
filiis vobis offert Deus quis enim           dealeth with you as with sons; for what
filius quem non corripit pater               son is he whom the father chasteneth
                                             not?

12:8  quod si extra disciplinam estis        8.  But if ye be without chastisement,
cuius participes facti sunt omnes ergo       whereof all are partakers, then are ye
adulteri et non filii estis                  bastards, and not sons.

12:9  deinde patres quidem carnis            9.  Furthermore we have had fathers of
nostrae habuimus eruditores et               our flesh which corrected us, and we
reverebamur non multo magis                  gave them reverence: shall we not much
obtemperabimus Patri spirituum et            rather be in subjection unto the Father
vivemus                                      of spirits, and live?

12:10  et illi quidem in tempore             10.  For they verily for a few days
paucorum dierum secundum voluntatem          chastened us after their own pleasure;
suam erudiebant nos hic autem ad id          but he for our profit, that we might be
quod utile est in recipiendo                 partakers of his holiness.
sanctificationem eius

12:11  omnis autem disciplina in             11.  Now no chastening for the present
praesenti quidem videtur non esse            seemeth to be joyous, but grievous:
gaudii sed maeroris postea autem             nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the
fructum pacatissimum exercitatis per         peaceable fruit of righteousness unto
eam reddit iustitiae                         them which are exercised thereby.

12:12  propter quod remissas manus et        12.  Wherefore lift up the hands which
soluta genua erigite                         hang down, and the feeble knees;

12:13  et gressus rectos facite pedibus      13.  And make straight paths for your
vestris ut non claudicans erret magis        feet, lest that which is lame be turned
autem sanetur                                out of the way; but let it rather be
                                             healed.

12:14  pacem sequimini cum omnibus et        14.  Follow peace with all men, and
sanctimoniam sine qua nemo videbit           holiness, without which no man shall
Dominum                                      see the Lord:

12:15  contemplantes ne quis desit           15.  Looking diligently lest any man
gratiae Dei ne qua radix amaritudinis        fail of the grace of God; lest any root
sursum germinans inpediat et per illam       of bitterness springing up trouble you,
inquinentur multi                            and thereby many be defiled;

12:16  ne quis fornicator aut profanus       16.  Lest there be any fornicator, or
ut Esau qui propter unam escam vendidit      profane person, as Esau, who for one
primitiva sua                                morsel of meat sold his birthright.

12:17  scitote enim quoniam et postea        17.  For ye know how that afterward,
cupiens hereditare benedictionem             when he would have inherited the
reprobatus est non enim invenit              blessing, he was rejected: for he found
paenitentiae locum quamquam cum              no place of repentance, though he
lacrimis inquisisset eam                     sought it carefully with tears.

12:18  non enim accessistis ad               18.  For ye are not come unto the mount
tractabilem et accensibilem ignem et         that might be touched, and that burned
turbinem et caliginem et procellam           with fire, nor unto blackness, and
                                             darkness, and tempest,

12:19  et tubae sonum et vocem verborum      19.  And the sound of a trumpet, and
quam qui audierunt excusaverunt se ne        the voice of words; which voice they
eis fieret verbum                            that heard intreated that the word
                                             should not be spoken to them any more:

12:20  non enim portabant quod               20.  (For they could not endure that
dicebatur et si bestia tetigerit montem      which was commanded, And if so much as
lapidabitur                                  a beast touch the mountain, it shall be
                                             stoned, or thrust through with a dart:

12:21  et ita terribile erat quod            21.  And so terrible was the sight,
videbatur Moses dixit exterritus sum et      that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and
tremebundus                                  quake:)

12:22  sed accessistis ad Sion montem        22.  But ye are come unto mount Sion,
et civitatem Dei viventis Hierusalem         and unto the city of the living God,
caelestem et multorum milium angelorum       the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an
frequentiae                                  innumerable company of angels,

12:23  et ecclesiam primitivorum qui         23.  To the general assembly and church
conscripti sunt in caelis et iudicem         of the firstborn, which are written in
omnium Deum et spiritus iustorum             heaven, and to God the Judge of all,
perfectorum                                  and to the spirits of just men made
                                             perfect,

12:24  et testamenti novi mediatorem         24.  And to Jesus the mediator of the
Iesum et sanguinis sparsionem melius         new covenant, and to the blood of
loquentem quam Abel                          sprinkling, that speaketh better things
                                             that that of Abel.

12:25  videte ne recusetis loquentem si      25.  See that ye refuse not him that
enim illi non effugerunt recusantes eum      speaketh. For if they escaped not who
qui super terram loquebatur multo magis      refused him that spake on earth, much
nos qui de caelis loquentem nobis            more shall not we escape, if we turn
avertimur                                    away from him that speaketh from heaven:

12:26  cuius vox movit terram tunc modo      26.  Whose voice then shook the earth:
autem repromittit dicens adhuc semel         but now he hath promised, saying, Yet
ego movebo non solum terram sed et           once more I shake not the earth only,
caelum                                       but also heaven.

12:27  quod autem adhuc semel dicit          27.  And this word, Yet once more,
declarat mobilium translationem tamquam      signifieth the removing of those things
factorum ut maneant ea quae sunt             that are shaken, as of things that are
inmobilia                                    made, that those things which cannot be
                                             shaken may remain.

12:28  itaque regnum inmobile                28.  Wherefore we receiving a kingdom
suscipientes habemus gratiam per quam        which cannot be moved, let us have
serviamus placentes Deo cum metu et          grace, whereby we may serve God
reverentia                                   acceptably with reverence and godly
                                             fear:

12:29  etenim Deus noster ignis              29.  For our God is a consuming fire.
