4:1  timeamus ergo ne forte relicta          1.  Let us therefore fear, lest, a
pollicitatione introeundi in requiem         promise being left us of entering into
eius existimetur aliqui ex vobis deesse      his rest, any of you should seem to
                                             come short of it.

4:2  etenim et nobis nuntiatum est           2.  For unto us was the gospel
quemadmodum et illis sed non profuit         preached, as well as unto them: but the
illis sermo auditus non admixtis fidei       word preached did not profit them, not
ex his quae audierunt                        being mixed with faith in them that
                                             heard it.

4:3  ingrediemur enim in requiem qui         3.  For we which have believed do enter
credidimus quemadmodum dixit sicut           into rest, as he said, As I have sworn
iuravi in ira mea si introibunt in           in my wrath, if they shall enter into
requiem meam et quidem operibus ab           my rest: although the works were
institutione mundi factis                    finished from the foundation of the
                                             world.

4:4  dixit enim quodam loco de die           4.  For he spake in a certain place of
septima sic et requievit Deus die            the seventh day on this wise, And God
septima ab omnibus operibus suis             did rest the seventh day from all his
                                             works.

4:5  et in isto rursum si introibunt in      5.  And in this place again, If they
requiem meam                                 shall enter into my rest.

4:6  quoniam ergo superest quosdam           6.  Seeing therefore it remaineth that
introire in illam et hii quibus              some must enter therein, and they to
prioribus adnuntiatum est non                whom it was first preached entered not
introierunt propter incredulitatem           in because of unbelief:

4:7  iterum terminat diem quendam hodie      7.  Again, he limiteth a certain day,
in David dicendo post tantum temporis        saying in David, To day, after so long
sicut supra dictum est hodie si vocem        a time; as it is said, To day if ye
eius audieritis nolite obdurare corda        will hear his voice, harden not your
vestra                                       hearts.

4:8  nam si eis Iesus requiem                8.  For if Jesus had given them rest,
praestitisset numquam de alio                then would he not afterward have spoken
loqueretur posthac die                       of another day.

4:9  itaque relinquitur sabbatismus          9.  There remaineth therefore a rest to
populo Dei                                   the people of God.

4:10  qui enim ingressus est in requiem      10.  For he that is entered into his
eius etiam ipse requievit ab operibus        rest, he also hath ceased from his own
suis sicut a suis Deus                       works, as God did from his.

4:11  festinemus ergo ingredi in illam       11.  Let us labour therefore to enter
requiem ut ne in id ipsum quis incidat       into that rest, lest any man fall after
incredulitatis exemplum                      the same example of unbelief.

4:12  vivus est enim Dei sermo et            12.  For the word of God is quick, and
efficax et penetrabilior omni gladio         powerful, and sharper than any twoedged
ancipiti et pertingens usque ad              sword, piercing even to the dividing
divisionem animae ac spiritus conpagum       asunder of soul and spirit, and of the
quoque et medullarum et discretor            joints and marrow, and is a discerner
cogitationum et intentionum cordis           of the thoughts and intents of the
                                             heart.

4:13  et non est ulla creatura               13.  Neither is there any creature that
invisibilis in conspectu eius omnia          is not manifest in his sight: but all
autem nuda et aperta sunt oculis eius        things are naked and opened unto the
ad quem nobis sermo                          eyes of him with whom we have to do.

4:14  habentes ergo pontificem magnum        14.  Seeing then that we have a great
qui penetraverit caelos Iesum Filium         high priest, that is passed into the
Dei teneamus confessionem                    heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us
                                             hold fast our profession.

4:15  non enim habemus pontificem qui        15.  For we have not an high priest
non possit conpati infirmitatibus            which cannot be touched with the
nostris temptatum autem per omnia pro        feeling of our infirmities; but was in
similitudine absque peccato                  all points tempted like as we are, yet
                                             without sin.

4:16  adeamus ergo cum fiducia ad            16.  Let us therefore come boldly unto
thronum gratiae ut misericordiam             the throne of grace, that we may obtain
consequamur et gratiam inveniamus in         mercy, and find grace to help in time
auxilio oportuno                             of need.
