2:1 propterea abundantius oportet 1. Therefore we ought to give the more
observare nos ea quae audivimus ne earnest heed to the things which we
forte pereffluamus have heard, lest at any time we should
let them slip.
2:2 si enim qui per angelos dictus est 2. For if the word spoken by angels
sermo factus est firmus et omnis was stedfast, and every transgression
praevaricatio et inoboedientia accepit and disobedience received a just
iustam mercedis retributionem recompence of reward;
2:3 quomodo nos effugiemus si tantam 3. How shall we escape, if we neglect
neglexerimus salutem quae cum initium so great salvation; which at the first
accepisset enarrari per Dominum ab eis began to be spoken by the Lord, and was
qui audierunt in nos confirmata est confirmed unto us by them that heard
him;
2:4 contestante Deo signis et 4. God also bearing them witness, both
portentis et variis virtutibus et with signs and wonders, and with divers
Spiritus Sancti distributionibus miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost,
secundum suam voluntatem according to his own will?
2:5 non enim angelis subiecit orbem 5. For unto the angels hath he not put
terrae futurum de quo loquimur in subjection the world to come,
whereof we speak.
2:6 testatus est autem in quodam loco 6. But one in a certain place
quis dicens quid est homo quod memor es testified, saying, What is man, that
eius aut filius hominis quoniam visitas thou art mindful of him? or the son of
eum man that thou visitest him?
2:7 minuisti eum paulo minus ab 7. Thou madest him a little lower than
angelis gloria et honore coronasti eum the angels; thou crownedst him with
et constituisti eum super opera manuum glory and honour, and didst set him
tuarum over the works of thy hands:
2:8 omnia subiecisti sub pedibus eius 8. Thou hast put all things in
in eo enim quod ei omnia subiecit nihil subjection under his feet. For in that
dimisit non subiectum ei nunc autem he put all in subjection under him, he
necdum videmus omnia subiecta ei left nothing that is not put under him.
But now we see not yet all things put
under him.
2:9 eum autem qui modico quam angeli 9. But we see Jesus, who was made a
minoratus est videmus Iesum propter little lower than the angels for the
passionem mortis gloria et honore suffering of death, crowned with glory
coronatum ut gratia Dei pro omnibus and honour; that he by the grace of God
gustaret mortem should taste death for every man.
2:10 decebat enim eum propter quem 10. For it became him, for whom are
omnia et per quem omnia qui multos all things, and by whom are all things,
filios in gloriam adduxerat auctorem in bringing many sons unto glory, to
salutis eorum per passiones consummare make the captain of their salvation
perfect through sufferings.
2:11 qui enim sanctificat et qui 11. For both he that sanctifieth and
sanctificantur ex uno omnes propter they who are sanctified are all of one:
quam causam non confunditur fratres eos for which cause he is not ashamed to
vocare dicens call them brethren,
2:12 nuntiabo nomen tuum fratribus 12. Saying, I will declare thy name
meis in medio ecclesiae laudabo te unto my brethren, in the midst of the
church will I sing praise unto thee.
2:13 et iterum ego ero fidens in eum 13. And again, I will put my trust in
et iterum ecce ego et pueri mei quos him. And again, Behold I and the
mihi dedit Deus children which God hath given me.
2:14 quia ergo pueri communicaverunt 14. Forasmuch then as the children are
sanguini et carni et ipse similiter partakers of flesh and blood, he also
participavit hisdem ut per mortem himself likewise took part of the same;
destrueret eum qui habebat mortis that through death he might destroy him
imperium id est diabolum that had the power of death, that is,
the devil;
2:15 et liberaret eos qui timore 15. And deliver them who through fear
mortis per totam vitam obnoxii erant of death were all their lifetime
servituti subject to bondage.
2:16 nusquam enim angelos adprehendit 16. For verily he took not on him the
sed semen Abrahae adprehendit nature of angels; but he took on him
the seed of Abraham.
2:17 unde debuit per omnia fratribus 17. Wherefore in all things it behoved
similare ut misericors fieret et him to be made like unto his brethren,
fidelis pontifex ad Deum ut that he might be a merciful and
repropitiaret delicta populi faithful high priest in things
pertaining to God, to make
reconciliation for the sins of the
people.
2:18 in eo enim in quo passus est ipse 18. For in that he himself hath
temptatus potens est eis qui temptantur suffered being tempted, he is able to
auxiliari succour them that are tempted.
