6:1 quapropter intermittentes 1. Therefore leaving the principles of
inchoationis Christi sermonem ad the doctrine of Christ, let us go on
perfectionem feramur non rursum unto perfection; not laying again the
iacientes fundamentum paenitentiae ab foundation of repentance from dead
operibus mortuis et fidei ad Deum works, and of faith toward God,
6:2 baptismatum doctrinae inpositionis 2. Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of
quoque manuum ac resurrectionis laying on of hands, and of resurrection
mortuorum et iudicii aeterni of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
6:3 et hoc faciemus siquidem 3. And this will we do, if God permit.
permiserit Deus
6:4 inpossibile est enim eos qui semel 4. For it is impossible for those who
sunt inluminati gustaverunt etiam donum were once enlightened, and have tasted
caeleste et participes sunt facti of the heavenly gift, and were made
Spiritus Sancti partakers of the Holy Ghost,
6:5 gustaverunt nihilominus bonum Dei 5. And have tasted the good word of
verbum virtutesque saeculi venturi God, and the powers of the world to
come,
6:6 et prolapsi sunt renovari rursus 6. If they shall fall away, to renew
ad paenitentiam rursum crucifigentes them again unto repentance; seeing they
sibimet ipsis Filium Dei et ostentui crucify to themselves the Son of God
habentes afresh, and put him to an open shame.
6:7 terra enim saepe venientem super 7. For the earth which drinketh in the
se bibens imbrem et generans herbam rain that cometh oft upon it, and
oportunam illis a quibus colitur bringeth forth herbs meet for them by
accipit benedictionem a Deo whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing
from God:
6:8 proferens autem spinas ac tribulos 8. But that which beareth thorns and
reproba est et maledicto proxima cuius briers is rejected, and is nigh unto
consummatio in conbustionem cursing; whose end is to be burned.
6:9 confidimus autem de vobis 9. But, beloved, we are persuaded
dilectissimi meliora et viciniora better things of you, and things that
saluti tametsi ita loquimur accompany salvation, though we thus
speak.
6:10 non enim iniustus Deus ut 10. For God is not unrighteous to
obliviscatur operis vestri et forget your work and labour of love,
dilectionis quam ostendistis in nomine which ye have shewed toward his name,
ipsius qui ministrastis sanctis et in that ye have ministered to the
ministratis saints, and do minister.
6:11 cupimus autem unumquemque vestrum 11. And we desire that every one of
eandem ostentare sollicitudinem ad you do shew the same diligence to the
expletionem spei usque in finem full assurance of hope unto the end:
6:12 ut non segnes efficiamini verum 12. That ye be not slothful, but
imitatores eorum qui fide et patientia followers of them who through faith and
hereditabunt promissiones patience inherit the promises.
6:13 Abrahae namque promittens Deus 13. For when God made promise to
quoniam neminem habuit per quem iuraret Abraham, because he could swear by no
maiorem iuravit per semet ipsum greater, he sware by himself,
6:14 dicens nisi benedicens benedicam 14. Saying, Surely blessing I will
te et multiplicans multiplicabo te bless thee, and multiplying I will
multiply thee.
6:15 et sic longanimiter ferens 15. And so, after he had patiently
adeptus est repromissionem endured, he obtained the promise.
6:16 homines enim per maiorem sui 16. For men verily swear by the
iurant et omnis controversiae eorum greater: and an oath for confirmation
finis ad confirmationem est iuramentum is to them an end of all strife.
6:17 in quo abundantius volens Deus 17. Wherein God, willing more
ostendere pollicitationis heredibus abundantly to shew unto the heirs of
inmobilitatem consilii sui interposuit promise the immutability of his
iusiurandum counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
6:18 ut per duas res inmobiles quibus 18. That by two immutable things, in
inpossibile est mentiri Deum which it was impossible for God to lie,
fortissimum solacium habeamus qui we might have a strong consolation, who
confugimus ad tenendam propositam spem have fled for refuge to lay hold upon
the hope set before us:
6:19 quam sicut anchoram habemus 19. Which hope we have as an anchor of
animae tutam ac firmam et incedentem the soul, both sure and stedfast, and
usque in interiora velaminis which entereth into that within the
veil;
6:20 ubi praecursor pro nobis introiit 20. Whither the forerunner is for us
Iesus secundum ordinem Melchisedech entered, even Jesus, made an high
pontifex factus in aeternum priest for ever after the order of
Melchisedec.
