14:1 sectamini caritatem aemulamini 1. Follow after charity, and desire
spiritalia magis autem ut prophetetis spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may
prophesy.
14:2 qui enim loquitur lingua non 2. For he that speaketh in an unknown
hominibus loquitur sed Deo nemo enim tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto
audit Spiritu autem loquitur mysteria God: for no man understandeth him;
howbeit in the spirit he speaketh
mysteries.
14:3 nam qui prophetat hominibus 3. But he that prophesieth speaketh
loquitur aedificationem et unto men to edification, and
exhortationem et consolationes exhortation, and comfort.
14:4 qui loquitur lingua semet ipsum 4. He that speaketh in an unknown
aedificat qui autem prophetat ecclesiam tongue edifieth himself; but he that
aedificat prophesieth edifieth the church.
14:5 volo autem omnes vos loqui 5. I would that ye all spake with
linguis magis autem prophetare nam tongues but rather that ye prophesied:
maior est qui prophetat quam qui for greater is he that prophesieth than
loquitur linguis nisi si forte ut he that speaketh with tongues, except
interpretetur ut ecclesia he interpret, that the church may
aedificationem accipiat receive edifying.
14:6 nunc autem fratres si venero ad 6. Now, brethren, if I come unto you
vos linguis loquens quid vobis prodero speaking with tongues, what shall I
nisi si vobis loquar aut in revelatione profit you, except I shall speak to you
aut scientia aut prophetia aut in either by revelation, or by knowledge,
doctrina or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
14:7 tamen quae sine anima sunt vocem 7. And even things without life giving
dantia sive tibia sive cithara nisi sound, whether pipe or harp, except
distinctionem sonituum dederint quomodo they give a distinction in the sounds,
scietur quod canitur aut quod how shall it be known what is piped or
citharizatur harped?
14:8 etenim si incertam vocem det tuba 8. For if the trumpet give an
quis parabit se ad bellum uncertain sound, who shall prepare
himself to the battle?
14:9 ita et vos per linguam nisi 9. So likewise ye, except ye utter by
manifestum sermonem dederitis quomodo the tongue words easy to be understood,
scietur id quod dicitur eritis enim in how shall it be known what is spoken?
aera loquentes for ye shall speak into the air.
14:10 tam multa ut puta genera 10. There are, it may be, so many
linguarum sunt in mundo et nihil sine kinds of voices in the world, and none
voce est of them is without signification.
14:11 si ergo nesciero virtutem vocis 11. Therefore if I know not the
ero ei cui loquor barbarus et qui meaning of the voice, I shall be unto
loquitur mihi barbarus him that speaketh a barbarian, and he
that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto
me.
14:12 sic et vos quoniam aemulatores 12. Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are
estis spirituum ad aedificationem zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that
ecclesiae quaerite ut abundetis ye may excel to the edifying of the
church.
14:13 et ideo qui loquitur lingua oret 13. Wherefore let him that speaketh in
ut interpretetur an unknown tongue pray that he may
interpret.
14:14 nam si orem lingua spiritus meus 14. For if I pray in an unknown
orat mens autem mea sine fructu est tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my
understanding is unfruitful.
14:15 quid ergo est orabo spiritu 15. What is it then? I will pray with
orabo et mente psallam spiritu psallam the spirit, and I will pray with the
et mente understanding also: I will sing with
the spirit, and I will sing with the
understanding also.
14:16 ceterum si benedixeris spiritu 16. Else when thou shalt bless with
qui supplet locum idiotae quomodo dicet the spirit, how shall he that occupieth
amen super tuam benedictionem quoniam the room of the unlearned say Amen at
quid dicas nescit thy giving of thanks, seeing he
understandeth not what thou sayest?
14:17 nam tu quidem bene gratias agis 17. For thou verily givest thanks
sed alter non aedificatur well, but the other is not edified.
14:18 gratias ago Deo quod omnium 18. I thank my God, I speak with
vestrum lingua loquor tongues more than ye all:
14:19 sed in ecclesia volo quinque 19. Yet in the church I had rather
verba sensu meo loqui ut et alios speak five words with my understanding,
instruam quam decem milia verborum in that by my voice I might teach others
lingua also, than ten thousand words in an
unknown tongue.
14:20 fratres nolite pueri effici 20. Brethren, be not children in
sensibus sed malitia parvuli estote understanding: howbeit in malice be ye
sensibus autem perfecti estote children, but in understanding be men.
14:21 in lege scriptum est quoniam in 21. In the law it is written, With men
aliis linguis et labiis aliis loquar of other tongues and other lips will I
populo huic et nec sic exaudient me speak unto this people; and yet for all
dicit Dominus that will they not hear me, saith the
Lord.
14:22 itaque linguae in signum sunt 22. Wherefore tongues are for a sign,
non fidelibus sed infidelibus prophetia not to them that believe, but to them
autem non infidelibus sed fidelibus that believe not: but prophesying
serveth not for them that believe not,
but for them which believe.
14:23 si ergo conveniat universa 23. If therefore the whole church be
ecclesia in unum et omnes linguis come together into one place, and all
loquantur intrent autem idiotae aut speak with tongues, and there come in
infideles nonne dicent quod insanitis those that are unlearned, or
unbelievers, will they not say that ye
are mad?
14:24 si autem omnes prophetent intret 24. But if all prophesy, and there
autem quis infidelis vel idiota come in one that believeth not, or one
convincitur ab omnibus diiudicatur ab unlearned, he is convinced of all, he
omnibus is judged of all:
14:25 occulta cordis eius manifesta 25. And thus are the secrets of his
fiunt et ita cadens in faciem adorabit heart made manifest; and so falling
Deum pronuntians quod vere Deus in down on his face he will worship God,
vobis est and report that God is in you of a
truth.
14:26 quid ergo est fratres cum 26. How is it then, brethren? when ye
convenitis unusquisque vestrum psalmum come together, every one of you hath a
habet doctrinam habet apocalypsin habet psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue,
linguam habet interpretationem habet hath a revelation, hath an
omnia ad aedificationem fiant interpretation. Let all things be done
unto edifying.
14:27 sive lingua quis loquitur 27. If any man speak in an unknown
secundum duos aut ut multum tres et per tongue, let it be by two, or at the
partes et unus interpretetur most by three, and that by course; and
let one interpret.
14:28 si autem non fuerit interpres 28. But if there be no interpreter,
taceat in ecclesia sibi autem loquatur let him keep silence in the church; and
et Deo let him speak to himself, and to God.
14:29 prophetae duo aut tres dicant et 29. Let the prophets speak two or
ceteri diiudicent three, and let the other judge.
14:30 quod si alii revelatum fuerit 30. If any thing be revealed to
sedenti prior taceat another that sitteth by, let the first
hold his peace.
14:31 potestis enim omnes per singulos 31. For ye may all prophesy one by
prophetare ut omnes discant et omnes one, that all may learn, and all may be
exhortentur comforted.
14:32 et spiritus prophetarum 32. And the spirits of the prophets
prophetis subiecti sunt are subject to the prophets.
14:33 non enim est dissensionis Deus 33. For God is not the author of
sed pacis sicut in omnibus ecclesiis confusion, but of peace, as in all
sanctorum churches of the saints.
14:34 mulieres in ecclesiis taceant 34. Let your women keep silence in the
non enim permittitur eis loqui sed churches: for it is not permitted unto
subditas esse sicut et lex dicit them to speak; but they are commanded
to be under obedience as also saith the
law.
14:35 si quid autem volunt discere 35. And if they will learn any thing,
domi viros suos interrogent turpe est let them ask their husbands at home:
enim mulieri loqui in ecclesia for it is a shame for women to speak in
the church.
14:36 an a vobis verbum Dei processit 36. What? came the word of God out
aut in vos solos pervenit from you? or came it unto you only?
14:37 si quis videtur propheta esse 37. If any man think himself to be a
aut spiritalis cognoscat quae scribo prophet, or spiritual, let him
vobis quia Domini sunt mandata acknowledge that the things that I
write unto you are the commandments of
the Lord.
14:38 si quis autem ignorat ignorabitur 38. But if any man be ignorant, let
him be ignorant.
14:39 itaque fratres aemulamini 39. Wherefore, brethren, covet to
prophetare et loqui linguis nolite prophesy, and forbid not to speak with
prohibere tongues.
14:40 omnia autem honeste et secundum 40. Let all things be done decently
ordinem fiant and in order.
