8:1 de his autem quae idolis 1. Now as touching things offered unto
sacrificantur scimus quia omnes idols, we know that we all have
scientiam habemus scientia inflat knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but
caritas vero aedificat charity edifieth.
8:2 si quis se existimat scire aliquid 2. And if any man think that he
nondum cognovit quemadmodum oporteat knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing
eum scire yet as he ought to know.
8:3 si quis autem diligit Deum hic 3. But if any man love God, the same
cognitus est ab eo is known of him.
8:4 de escis autem quae idolis 4. As concerning therefore the eating
immolantur scimus quia nihil est idolum of those things that are offered in
in mundo et quod nullus Deus nisi unus sacrifice unto idols, we know that an
idol is nothing in the world, and that
there is none other God but one.
8:5 nam et si sunt qui dicantur dii 5. For though there be that are called
sive in caelo sive in terra siquidem gods, whether in heaven or in earth,
sunt dii multi et domini multi (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
8:6 nobis tamen unus Deus Pater ex quo 6. But to us there is but one God, the
omnia et nos in illum et unus Dominus Father, of whom are all things, and we
Iesus Christus per quem omnia et nos in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by
per ipsum whom are all things, and we by him.
8:7 sed non in omnibus est scientia 7. Howbeit there is not in every man
quidam autem conscientia usque nunc that knowledge: for some with
idoli quasi idolothytum manducant et conscience of the idol unto this hour
conscientia ipsorum cum sit infirma eat it as a thing offered unto an idol;
polluitur and their conscience being weak is
defiled.
8:8 esca autem nos non commendat Deo 8. But meat commendeth us not to God:
neque si non manducaverimus deficiemus for neither, if we eat, are we the
neque si manducaverimus abundabimus better; neither, if we eat not, are we
the worse.
8:9 videte autem ne forte haec 9. But take heed lest by any means
licentia vestra offendiculum fiat this liberty of your's become a
infirmibus stumblingblock to them that are weak.
8:10 si enim quis viderit eum qui 10. For if any man see thee which hast
habet scientiam in idolio recumbentem knowledge sit at meat in the idol's
nonne conscientia eius cum sit infirma temple, shall not the conscience of him
aedificabitur ad manducandum idolothyta which is weak be emboldened to eat
those things which are offered to idols;
8:11 et peribit infirmus in tua 11. And through thy knowledge shall
scientia frater propter quem Christus the weak brother perish, for whom
mortuus est Christ died?
8:12 sic autem peccantes in fratres et 12. But when ye sin so against the
percutientes conscientiam eorum brethren, and wound their weak
infirmam in Christo peccatis conscience, ye sin against Christ.
8:13 quapropter si esca scandalizat 13. Wherefore, if meat make my brother
fratrem meum non manducabo carnem in to offend, I will eat no flesh while
aeternum ne fratrem meum scandalizem the world standeth, lest I make my
brother to offend.
